What things do you love that your family and friends don't understand?

I've recently rediscovered the Pro Wrestling of my childhood. It was huge when I was growing up and I get nostalgic when watching old matches.

Also museums, any museum regardless of subject and delis. I'm always looking for something new to try. I can't walk past a deli or Chinese/Japanese/Turkish etc store.

There are others too but I'll have to think about them.

No judgement because there are plenty of things they love that don't appeal to me but is there anything you love that puzzles your family or friends?

The Green Man/finding Green Men - love trying to spot them in old churches. Found this one in a museum on holiday last week - made my day. My family think I'm odd (they're not wrong Grin)

Oh me too! And have a few myself inside and outside (only tasteful ones though, not the garish type natch), some which are very old.

Welikebeingcosy · 20/09/2022 22:20

Classic EastEnders- researching the family histories of all the families on there, going down rabbit holes on Wikipedia tying together all the plots of the past. Pausing it when I see two characters unrelated to one another interacting, because I'm sure they are related somehow, and then going online to check. Mentally noting down the styles and house decor and watching it change. Trying to remember parts of my childhood where I felt a change in society and seeing if it matches up with big changes in the style, writing or cast members of the soap.

Learning languages that have not much use in the world, other than the country where they are used, that I barely visit. Me and my DD have even started trying to make our own language.

Synchonicities- enthusiastically tell people the coincidences that have just happened each day, for them to just nod and not notice I said it.

Mumsnet...

I bloody love a museum or stately home! My oldest seems to enjoy them as well.

Anything to do with Pride and Prejudice, or Jane Austen.

Nimo12 · 20/09/2022 22:20

Wrestling here too 😄😄

  • Reading history entries on Wikipedia. Especially early female royals. Not fussed about the country as long as there’s an interesting back story! Also, royal scandals. (The mayerling incident is a great example if anyone is looking for a read!)
  • True crime vlogs on YouTube.
  • medical documentaries. My DH thinks this one is extra weird as I work for the NHS as my day job. The thing is, we see a snapshot of our patients but we nearly never get the outcome so this is a guaranteed patient outcome fix.
  • Traipsing around castles, ruins, stately homes.
  • rereading my old favourite children’s books

Good lord. Are you my long lost twin? (apart from the working in the NHS part).

I’ve gone down many a Wikipedia rabbit hole reading about historical women. The number of children some of them had 😮

My castle traipsing is severely limited due to the fact that I live in Australia. I will be doing a Europe trip next year including London and Paris. Versailles is on my to do list (even though I’ve been there before) but I need a new castle/ historical location to visit on public transport from London (have been to Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace before).

bluetongue · 20/09/2022 22:26

The only problem with watching medical reality shows is that real life doctors I visit are rarely as nice as the TV ones.

Covetthee · 20/09/2022 22:32

Vlogs.

i go through phases of what I watch, up until recently it was korean housewives day in the life. (They fascinate me. Do they actually get at 5 am to cook full on breakfast and packed lunches? ) or booktubers.

billydilly · 20/09/2022 22:32

@Hibye23289 Yes, Maria! I've tried them all but always come back to her loveliness, handling fabrics in particular..
This is utterly impossible to explain to those poor unfortunates who don't get the tingles. We lucky few!

Made in Chelsea. My teen DDs are appalled!

Bestcatmum · 20/09/2022 22:39

I live in Glastonbury and have a pagan, new age vegetarian lifestyle and sleeve tattoos. I do work....nhs professional. My family who are upper class types just cannot understand what I'm doing. They are completely nonplussed.
But I in turn find their lifestyle turgid and materialistic. I've found my people here.

BeaLola · 20/09/2022 22:43

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 20/09/2022 22:49

Old buildings and looking at old maps, museums, local history, or history of places I visit.

No one has ever really been into that sort of thing. Then 2.5 years ago I started dating a lovely man and he's into all that sort of stuff! I love sharing it with him.

rejectedprincess · 20/09/2022 22:52

Graveyards! love reading the names, the ages they were when they died, their family members nearby, fascinating

thecrispfiend · 20/09/2022 22:54
