What things do you love that your family and friends don't understand?

I've recently rediscovered the Pro Wrestling of my childhood. It was huge when I was growing up and I get nostalgic when watching old matches.

Also museums, any museum regardless of subject and delis. I'm always looking for something new to try. I can't walk past a deli or Chinese/Japanese/Turkish etc store.

There are others too but I'll have to think about them.

No judgement because there are plenty of things they love that don't appeal to me but is there anything you love that puzzles your family or friends?

When I eat those cheap crabsticks my entire family looks at me in utter disgust. Sometimes I think my DH would never have married and reproduced with me if he had known.

I love crabsticks. I also put them in omelettes and with pasta in a cream sauce. Now I want some.

Living in a city! My parents and loads of my friends are completely baffled that we live in a flat voluntarily. I love it though, wouldn't trade it for all the houses in suburbia.

Watching Gardeners World.
Listening to anything featuring the vocals of Mark Lanegan.
Listing books I have read in an excel spreadsheet so I can keep track of what I read and when.

I love the 16 penpals.
I still write to my old friends from childhood.

ButterflyBitch · 20/09/2022 20:06

Doctor Who.

Eating in bed
Eating in the bath

My wider family are bemused that I like Art. Apparently it means I have delusions of grandeur!!!

DH and DCs are bemused by my obsession with everything to do with the Pope and the conclave. I am an atheist!!

ScrubberDubDub · 20/09/2022 20:07

Pancakes with gravy

I'm not interested in lemon juice, jam, sugar and all that business. I want thick beef gravy on mine

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/09/2022 20:08

@ScrubberDubDub Have you ever had that Nigella pasta that she specifies is to be eaten in the bath? She even includes timings for running the bath in the recipe.

Savoury breakfasts. The more savoury the better.

Noodle soup with chilli oil and soy? Yes please. Anything with fish sauce, I'm there. Leftover curry and naan: fine. Hoppers - great.

Yum cha/dim sum brunch - OMG.

Football, nobody in my house gets it but on weekends I can’t think about anything else. I support a championship team in the northeast and for me it’s like a religion!

IDidntWearASmileToday · 20/09/2022 20:20

Adam Driver - I think he's beautiful but my closest friend think he looks like a turtle (?!)

Pop punk music - my family are an ed Sheeran/Michael Bublé kind of family whereas I'd rather be listening to bowling for soup

Being vegetarian - DD is a massive carnivore

Sgtmajormummy · 20/09/2022 20:21

Pottery, china etc.
I’m obsessed but the family is like “seen one plate, seen ‘em all”.

They are foul!!

IWanderedLonely · 20/09/2022 20:28

The Green Man/finding Green Men - love trying to spot them in old churches. Found this one in a museum on holiday last week - made my day. My family think I'm odd (they're not wrong Grin)

Horseracing - acceptable
Studying the form and betting on horseracing - Not Quite The Thing.

I don't know if it's because they think betting is too common, too masculine or that I am suddenly- after ten years of viewing it as fun vaguely cerebral pursuit and placing my token 50p ew bets after half an hour of form study for a race- going to get hammered in a rough pub and bet the house on some dodgy nag I've never heard of in a 30 runner handicap based on a tip by a drunk propping up the bar.

No, but am googling it right now! Never had pasta in the bath before.

Last thing I ate in the bath was a pulled pork roll with stuffing and mustard. Best bath ever. DH was repulsed 😆

I collect vintage my little ponies-I only had 3 and a fake one when I was a little girl
i now have all the ones I didn’t get as a child

i collect vintage bits-the fact they had a life before me,and will have one after me,just fascinates me

one of my most treasured pieces is a Victorian birthday postcard-someone called florrie wrote birthday wishes to a friend-and I now own it

i love history-i love a good look at castles-the servants bits really fascinate me

i know my loved ones think I’m odd but I don’t care

Somethingsnappy · 20/09/2022 20:39

Anything witchy...

Morechocmorechoc · 20/09/2022 20:41

Fine wine, they think it's a waste of money. I think it's a better treat than most things.

geillisduncan · 20/09/2022 20:41

Greyhounds. My friends and family understand having one or two, I have four. No one quite gets it. Truth be told I'd have more if I could afford it. Love them.
