Shame the female royals didn't walk too

Kudos to Anne who went against tradition and stood up front with her brothers and walked (and also to all the grandchildren who did the vigil) but it's a shame to see all the other females in the funeral stay crawling slowly in a car while all the men walked, just seems so old fashioned (particularly when Anne has gone against it and she is the eldest female!!)

No mocking from me and I hope you are not suggesting it.

Just a wee bit of sadness.

From pauper to King - grief is the same.

Summer?

Do you mean Autumn, Princess Annes son Peter’s wife?

antelopevalley · 19/09/2022 15:35

Charlespen · 19/09/2022 15:33

It’s not so much mocking as incredulous, tbh.

The reasons why what happened happened is because someone decided it would happen for maximum effect and pomp and presence.

People like to think they are like us, and that Kate said to will ‘I’d best stay with the kids darling and that walk will be a bit much for them. You stay with your dad. I’ll go in the car with camilla.’

No.

I agree. The individuals will have had no choice. This is about a show of strength and support for the monarchy to ensure its future.

The whole thing felt very white and male tbh. We were playing spot the woman in the parade.

Dp annoyingly pointed out it was because it was the military and he has a point. In fact it was the whole military thing that actually put me on edge a bit as well. Did not feel representative of the reign or country to me

You missed members of the Commonwealth armed forces who weren't white - it wasn't BritishMilitary. There are non-white personnel in the British Armed Forces too. They've played a role in the last 10 days too from Scotland to London.

Quite a few women were in the Gun Carriage procession too.

Men are still more likely to join the Armed Forces than women which isn't sexist. Those who want to will join. Those who don't won't.

To women wear the same hats as men in the navy? I was trying to work out if I could indeed see women pulling the gun carriage or they were young men with feminine faces Confused

They were all wearing the same hats - there did seem to be quite a few women in there

Knittingmonster · 19/09/2022 15:37

properdoughnut · 19/09/2022 15:32

I think so though they could have been men with buns as I only noticed from behind

They were women. I don’t think the navy allow manbuns as official hairstyles

KetoSlawrus · 19/09/2022 15:37

Perhaps because most of them have children as well, and were coupling the funeral with motherhood, particularly those with babies.

Somethingneedstochange · 19/09/2022 15:44

Might have something to do with the queen's children and grandchildren being mostly male. The grandchildren's wives are mum's don't you know? Plus the Queen actually planned what she wanted to happen at her funeral herself years ago.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 19/09/2022 15:44

LadyHarmby · 19/09/2022 14:12

Agree it seems a bit old school and sexist

Old school sexism? In MY hereditary monarchy? Surely not!

You can't add a bit of Girl Power to a rotten, outdated institution and call it fixed.

BlancmanegeBunny · 19/09/2022 15:46

The Queen herself approved every detail of the funeral plan, who wpyld walk in parades etc was down to her. The Family would not go against her plan.

Zara, Eugenie, Beatrix and Sarah Chatto all had their counterparts walking and none seemed to have children with them. They all have staff including nannies.

Its hard to see it as anything else but old fashioned sexist roles and assumptions but unsurprising in an institution based on the primacy of men. Even if the throne is finally on absolute primogeniteur the aristocracy and titles are still overwhelmingly not just male promogeiteur but male absolute.

Who are Beatrice and Eugenie's counterparts?

antelopevalley · 19/09/2022 15:53

I am laughing at the idea the mums all have to look after their children. Dads can't obviously. And there is no such thing as a full-time nanny or other staff.

The Royal Family never need to worry about childcare. There is always someone to take on that role.

Zara doesnt have a counterpart, she is not the kings daughter neither is she the Queens oldest grandchild

Same for the others

Well yes, I don't think this events was ever going to be the one to push the boundaries of equity, diversity and inclusion; it's steeped in history and tradition.
The Royal family and the military certainly can and should challenge these issues, but today's funeral isn't the platform to do so. IMO.

eddiemairswife · 19/09/2022 16:03

Perhaps all the little lady soldiers should have glossy flowing hair and wear stiletto heels so we could all see the male/female ratio. Some people look hard to find fault in everything.

LadyWithLapdog · 19/09/2022 16:04

Why are people saying this wasn’t the occasion to send a message? When did your nan have a mile long procession for the funeral? Of course it was all message and show.

The Queen has four granddaughters and four grandsons.

35965a · 19/09/2022 16:07

There were loads of women in the services. Some people need an eye test.
As for the Royals, it was mainly the direct family who walked wasn’t it? Plus as someone said upthread it’s very hard to walk in time like that. Easier to have family by marriage in cars so the focus is on the Queen’s children I imagine.

Parker231 · 19/09/2022 16:11

The UK royal family is slow in catching up. The UK didn’t change the rules of succession being the first born regardless of gender until 2013. Norway changed theirs in 1990, Sweden 1980. Belgium 1991and the Netherlands 1983.

tigerpants800 · 19/09/2022 16:20

Totally agree! High heels look good, sure....but how cool would it have been if they'd ditched them and prioritised walking. Who cares about being attractive at a funeral.

ranktastic · 19/09/2022 16:21

But the rules of succession wouldn't have mattered till William had a child, which is when they did change

Sometimes only your parent will do

Charlespen · 19/09/2022 16:23

Snort. And there it is again. They are just like us.

No. NO, they aren’t.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/09/2022 16:24

Not a case of ‘mums having to look after their children’, nor is it likely to be about childcare/nanny issues.

It is wanting to be there for them on a sad occasion when they’ve lost their Great Gran. Maybe to be of comfort. Maybe to explain what is happening. Probably both.

Their dad is rightly part of this parade as son of the King and heir to the throne so he is otherwise engaged.

So laugh away while they are grieving and are doing what parents do, especially when they are still small.

And aye. Sometimes only a parent will do properdoughnut
