Shame the female royals didn't walk too

Kudos to Anne who went against tradition and stood up front with her brothers and walked (and also to all the grandchildren who did the vigil) but it's a shame to see all the other females in the funeral stay crawling slowly in a car while all the men walked, just seems so old fashioned (particularly when Anne has gone against it and she is the eldest female!!)

I thought the whole point of a state funeral is you do not do what you fancy doing on the day., There is protocol set out and you follow it.
They won't have had a choice. They will have been assigned the cars.

Doubt it. If they'd been forced to walk that wouldn't have been on would it. They learnt their lesson from forcing William and Harry.

Well I doubt Charles or William, as King and heir, had a choice. The rest I suppose could have said no if they were asked to walk. We'll never know.

They were wearing silly shoes.

Well done mumset for turning Her Majesty's funeral in a sexist /racist bunfight. Military and ethnic service people were Well represented, I thought, and there are plenty of high ranking black service personnel as you would have known by watching carefully

Qwerkie · 19/09/2022 15:20

You can’t have been looking that closely to spot women in the procession. There were loads in amongst the ratings pulling the gun carriage, the mounted police were women, like someone else said there.

just looking for something to get offended about

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 19/09/2022 15:20

It’s a funeral. Not everything has to send out a ‘message’ to promote diversity.

antelopevalley · 19/09/2022 15:21

@Papirus I really hope your DGF wanted to stay home. My DH uses a wheelchair. I would be furious if he felt he had to agree to stay home as it made things easier to deal with.

I can't take responsibility for that decision, as I was 7yo at the time. It was my aunt (DGF's funeral) and she seemed pleased to spend the morning with us, but different times, I agree and probably more effort would be made to accommodate the wheelchair now.

Charlespen · 19/09/2022 15:24

At my DGF's funeral my wheelchair bound aunt

They’ve really done a number on you, haven’t they?

It does make me laugh wryly when people reply with things like this. ‘Well at a funeral I went to …’

Within hours of birth, Charles, will, George, all of them, had gun salutes, the best medical care (no worries about waiting for an ambulance for the queen, hey?) privilege we can’t even imagine - it isn’t just about money.

I think that W & K have exceptional PR. People really do think they are just like them, a little posher of course, but that Kate could have been part of their NCT group, their four year old could go to Louis’ birthday party, if they lived somewhere different.

They are nothing like you. What your auntie Mary did at your uncle Jim’s funeral is totally irrelevant.

Bunnycat101 · 19/09/2022 15:26

There were loads of women. Maybe the female royals just didn’t want to. Both Beatrice and Eugenie have very small children. You have no idea whether there was a nanny somewhere close with them for example and they were wanting to get back to them. There are any number of reasons why they might not have wanted to.

I'm just saying there will have been reasons, which may well have been to make things run easier or may have been personal choice. I'm sure if any one of them wanted to take a stand and walk, they would have.

A lot is still around the expectation that women wear really high heels. I'm surprised so many still can, especially on an uneven stone floor.

I think those extremely high heels look very out of place at a funeral.

I don't think theres been any fight, though.
Women and ethnic minorities were represented in about the same % as they are in the armed forces in general, which shouldn't be a surprise to anybody!

PhillySub · 19/09/2022 15:27

They might not have been given a choice in the matter.

I was surprised there were so many really high pointy heels, especially when they had to go and stand on the grass at the end!

antelopevalley · 19/09/2022 15:29

There will be a dress code they have to abide by.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/09/2022 15:29

The grief they feel will be the same. So not totally irrelevant, no.

fiftytontheresa · 19/09/2022 15:31

To women wear the same hats as men in the navy? I was trying to work out if I could indeed see women pulling the gun carriage or they were young men with feminine faces Confused

antelopevalley · 19/09/2022 15:31

@SheldonesqueTheBstard These kind of comments are always in a slightly mocking tone. Why is it so irrelevant what happens normally at funerals?

Charlespen · 19/09/2022 15:32

This is what I mean about they’ve done a number on you.

Of course they are people and I am sure feel a sense of loss, but it is not the same as the loss of an ‘ordinary’ person at all.

Unless someone tells me that there was a what, forty eight hour queue to see Uncle Jim.

I think so though they could have been men with buns as I only noticed from behind

Hopeandlove · 19/09/2022 14:12

they were wearing heels and Kate was looking after two young children as was summer and Sophie. - and yes 14 is young

Summer?

redsunshinedasiy · 19/09/2022 14:16

I don't mean they should feel shame, I mean it's a shame that it's so sexist and could have sent a really strong positive message out (which Anne has!)

One could argue the opposite - that the men are expected to walk instead of sitting in a car?

Yes that's how I view it. They might have preferred a car.

Charlespen · 19/09/2022 15:33

It’s not so much mocking as incredulous, tbh.

The reasons why what happened happened is because someone decided it would happen for maximum effect and pomp and presence.

People like to think they are like us, and that Kate said to will ‘I’d best stay with the kids darling and that walk will be a bit much for them. You stay with your dad. I’ll go in the car with camilla.’

No.
