Shame the female royals didn't walk too

Kudos to Anne who went against tradition and stood up front with her brothers and walked (and also to all the grandchildren who did the vigil) but it's a shame to see all the other females in the funeral stay crawling slowly in a car while all the men walked, just seems so old fashioned (particularly when Anne has gone against it and she is the eldest female!!)

Almost all the royals who walked had either current or previous military sevice/rank. It's actually not easy to walk in step for so long, you can't just rock up and do it and it would have looked really off to have them all ambling along like civilians.

And I bet that’s why the others didn’t want to do it! It was traditionally the men who walked behind the coffin (so nice to see the Duke of Kent at the final bit of the procession; he’s 86 with some serious mobility issues but he walked behind George VI’s coffin and was obviously determined to do his bit for his cousin.) Princess Anne broke the mould (good for her), but I don’t think that means there should be the expectation on everyone else.

Agreed...I also think @BadNomad made an interesting point earlier about a possible logic to who walked...

There's also the possible issue that for other reasons there had to be a physical limit, possibly quite a small one, on the number of those who walked....it's worth looking at who else was in the walking group, or more specifically those on the immediate periphery and wondering what they might have been there for.

I agree. I wouldn’t have worn heels and I’m female so it’s not like the other women couldn’t have chosen suitable footwear and walked.

Maybe they want to wear heels.

Do you really expect modernity from such an archaic institution?

My son was in the Gun Carriage Crew. There were 136 sailors, 15 were women. That’s ~11%. In the forces currently the percentage of women is 11%. The Captain who led the Gun Crew is a woman. Pretty spot on representation from the forces in this Crew.

Also to the person who said the forces weren’t representative of her country - the Queen was their Commander in Chief. Their boss. They were saying good bye to their boss. And they did it with pride, honour and dignity. They did their duty.

You must be so proud of him. It was splendidly done.

Worrying the bones of why there weren't 8/10 fit and strapping women (and they would really, really need to be fit and strapping as well as about 6 foot, realistically) from the Brigade of Guards carrying this incredibly heavy coffin repeatedly, including lifts and flights of steps, detracts from the many roles women did play yesterday and during the last week.

It is not the same as fighting for equal pay, it really isn't. It is not important.

Well said.

Camilla has a broken something. Toe maybe? Catherine wanted to be with her kids presumably. And even if they didn't have these issues maybe just maybe they wanted to go in the car rather than walk.

Camilla is 75, she’d had a very busy few days going around the UK with her husband. I doubt she could have marched, not walked, marched for two miles.

They did a terrific job. You must be so proud.

Had fun at a funeral? Its not a visit to a theme park you know.

Nobody says they should not go to a funeral. The issue is whether they should have gone to just the private family funeral, or the family funeral plus the state funeral.

Fun at a funeral? What a stupid thing to say.

Cam22 · 21/09/2022 18:24

They had to wear heels! They couldn’t very well wear awful Ecco flats.

@cookiefudgemum Chapeau to your son - what an amazing job those young men and women did. I hope he feels really proud of himself.

Other shoes are available!

I don't wear high heels or Ecco flats.

Yes indeed, they were all absolutely faultless. Every footstep, every person. Amazing.

My son is in the military, but alas was not invited to take part!

The whole thing is old fashioned. It's like watching a circus show.

Some people like old fashioned.

Some people like old fashioned.

Some do, some don't. It's a ritual hundreds of years old.

Personally, I found the whole thing bizarre. Every person in that crowd had their mobile phones on to film and take photos. Imagine if that was your grandmother being paraded around like a show piece so crowds can get a selfie in.

Anywho, it's an end of an era. I can't see the royal family being as popular as they are today in 20 years time. The younger generation based on polls don't even believe the monarchy should exist.

JOFFCV · 22/09/2022 16:31

I'm not a royalist and I don't mind either way what happens in the future but it wasn't like a circus.

JOFFCV · 22/09/2022 16:32

*cookiefudgemum very proud Mum.

chris8888 · 22/09/2022 20:10

It was a huge tribute to the Queen but I think those young children shoud have been left at home. Poor things such a long sombre day to go through.
