Do you regularly run out of milk, bread, cereal etc?

Strange question but we get our shopping weekly and at some point we run out of these things before replacing them. As far as I'm concerned this is normal life but 16 year old ds1 gets moody and annoyed about this. Are me and dh idiots for not getting 'on top' of this problem or is he just a moody teen? I know this seems very petty but he's driving me mad at the moment🙄

No. I keep milk and bread frozen - because who needs a shop run before their first proper coffee and toast.

dudsville · 16/09/2022 07:41

We don't run out. We also do a weekly shop and occasionally buy a little more than we need in order to make sure we're covered.

WildfellAnne · 16/09/2022 07:43

No, not regularly. Occasionally we might run out - once or twice a year - but not often.

No, we get them delivered. But maybe your 16 year old could go to the shops to get some more. Do you live close enough?

Sothis · 16/09/2022 07:43

No

catfunk · 16/09/2022 07:44

No, I just buy enough to last the week. Surely if you run out every week you're not buying enough?

heldinadream · 16/09/2022 07:45

Never. Freeze bread and milk and always replace stocks. Cereal always have the next one. Just organisation and forethought?

BoxOfCats · 16/09/2022 07:45

No, we don't run out usually. Sometimes I buy extra at the start of the week, or do a quick top up mid week so we don't run out of essentials. We also have some shelf stable milk in the pantry and bread in the freezer for emergencies.

I have a breadmaker as well. Today I was working from home and we had run out of bread so put the ingredients in before I started work. It just takes a couple of minutes to bung everything in, so it's quicker than going to the shop just for bread.

happystory · 16/09/2022 07:45

Very rarely. If he's being moody about it, he can go to the shop!

Hotandbothereds · 16/09/2022 07:45

We used to run out of milk, now we get it delivered twice a week and it’s great, they deliver bread too.

stormelf · 16/09/2022 07:45

We get milk delivered three times a week so never run out. I buy one loaf of bread a week which usually does us but always have a back up loaf in the freezer. We never run out of cereal. My kids are all five and under through so I appreciate their appetites are a lot smaller than those of teenagers

savehannah · 16/09/2022 07:46

The only thing we regularly run out of is milk, despite buying 16 pints every time 😳 Nearly running out usually prompts me to go and do the next big shop. Ocassionally have to do a quick dash to corner shop if we completely run out but mostly when low, put rations on cereal and chocolate milk consumption until I've been shopping.

GoneWithTheWine1 · 16/09/2022 07:46

No. If I do a seven days shop I get like 3 6 pints of milk, bread to freeze, two packets of cereal etc. isn't that just normal?
I'd be annoyed waking up to no milk or cereal or bread to make sandwiches with too!

IHateWasps · 16/09/2022 07:46

No. Once or twice a year at most

Chattycathydoll · 16/09/2022 07:46

Yes. We live in a rented home which came with a wee little under counter fridge with icebox type freezer. There isn’t space to freeze milk or bread, let alone both.

I try to keep long life milk in stock but sometimes don’t get it replaced in time for the next time we run out.

Greenbks · 16/09/2022 07:46

What about having long life milk on hand? We have now have a little one and that will be worse case scenario- we have run out (food shop due Sunday) but we will buy more today and make sure we have more milk in the next shop.

why don’t you buy an extra half loaf and an extra bottle of milk?

HollyHocks13 · 16/09/2022 07:47

Yes, every week. We have 3 teenagers in the house so even if I buy lots, it gets eaten within a few days. I don't mind topping up milk and bread, I prefer it fresh anyway..

CatchersAndDreams · 16/09/2022 07:47

Not cereal but milk, bread and butter. My teens (15 & 16) don't get stroppy, they get asked to pick it up on their way home/or go to the shop for me.

catfunk · 16/09/2022 07:44

I literally can't fit any more milk in my fridge than what I usually buy (16 pints!)

HappyMarriage · 16/09/2022 07:47

We used to run out of milk a lot but now we get it delivered so we rarely do. We have young kids through so it’s hard to pop to the shop, I would have thought one advantage of having a teenager is that they can pop to the shop for you!

stealthninjamum · 16/09/2022 07:49

I think it sounds a bit disorganised to run out of a dry food like cereal but not worth getting angry about.

We probably do one big shop a week and then top ups of fresh food - milk, bread, fruit like strawberries. How does your son get home from school? He needs to step up and buy things you’re running low on and stop moaning. About once a week I message dd1 to stop at Lidl on her way home. She is happy to get bread or milk and sometimes she chooses dinner (she chooses ready made stuff like lasagne or chicken breast) but seems to enjoy the choice and responsibility. She’s 14.

picklemewalnuts · 16/09/2022 07:49

Ooh, this is very interesting. We don't run out. Ever.

However, if we do I am perfectly happy to manage by being flexible. The only thing you can't easily manage without, in most households, is toilet paper.

By contrast DH cannot run out of anything- he overbuys. We stockpile which is hard work from a cupboard organisation pov. He'll schedule a shop if we are short of an item, and spend £45 on extra stuff in order to have a jar of peanut butter.

Drives me mad. Think it's an ASD thing- his dad hoards supplies, too. His garage is like a shop. We're often sent home with a couple of bottles of cleaning fluid, some out of date tea bags and a few jars of jam!

littleducks · 16/09/2022 07:49

Before having a teen boy with massive appetite no I didn't run out that often. Now much more often as he finishes them, tbf he will text if I'm out and milk is running low

FourChimneys · 16/09/2022 07:50

Never. DH runs a brilliant system of always having one or two of everything in stock, then replaces it immediately when we start to use it.

00100001 · 16/09/2022 07:50

Soounds like the 16yo has just volunteered to do the milk, bread and cereal shopping. And needs to keep on top of it.
