Do you regularly run out of milk, bread, cereal etc?

Strange question but we get our shopping weekly and at some point we run out of these things before replacing them. As far as I'm concerned this is normal life but 16 year old ds1 gets moody and annoyed about this. Are me and dh idiots for not getting 'on top' of this problem or is he just a moody teen? I know this seems very petty but he's driving me mad at the moment🙄

I can't fit anymore in the fridge in the weekly shop otherwise I would. And with cereal sometimes they eat loads and other times hardly any so it's hard to gauge. I just find the implication that I'm a complete idiot frustrating. Bloody hell, me and dh manage the home, work etc and he barely picks his clothes off the floor and thinks he's superior!!

Never run out. Always have spares and a system for writing items to be replaced on the kitchen shopping list.

SheWoreYellow · 16/09/2022 07:51

Never. We replace when we open the last one. We have milk and bread frozen.

We have milk delivered so never run out, if we've had unexpected visitors who drink lots of tea for example one of us would pick some extra up when the milk is low before we run out. Cereal I always have several types weetabix, muesli and one other so never run out. Bread is more likely to go mouldy before we use it all than run out.
We also live a five minute walk from a Sainsbury's local so if things are running low one of us picks it up on the way home.

We used to run out of things when I was young, but we had very little money so things couldn't always be replaced until my mum was paid again, dad for paid monthly, mum weekly. But that's an entirely different scenario.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/09/2022 07:52

We live two minutes away from a coop. If we run out, someone grabs cash from the tin and goes to the shop. Even 9yo can manage this.

SheWoreYellow · 16/09/2022 07:52

Tell him to let you know when he opens a packet of cereal. You or he can then buy another.

Enko · 16/09/2022 07:53

We top up through the week on bread. Never run out of the others as low use items for us.

However as it annoys the teenager make.it his job halfway through the week to buy more. He will still be annoyed but at least it will benefit you.

I will say any child or husband of mine who gor annoyed about us running out of anything would.get a serious talk about respect and manners.

Tisfortired · 16/09/2022 07:54

Yes, milk, bread and fruit we always almost run out of, I tried buying extra in my weekly shop but it will either go off or get eaten anyway because it’s there!

We usually end up doing a mid week top up, around a fiver a time.

21secondstogo · 16/09/2022 07:54

We do run out of milk as teenage dc uses it up even when I say, leave a little bit for tea.

FrequentUser2022 · 16/09/2022 07:55

Not those items but we run out of fruit quite quickly as children have packed lunch. One DC stuck her nose up at an apple and orange today.

bodie1890 · 16/09/2022 07:56

No, we don't usually run out.

Surely you just work out how much you normally use and buy that much?

Tigerstripes1 · 16/09/2022 07:56

Milk and bread requires a top up when low. Sometimes I misjudge it and will use the last of it the day I intend to pick up more (like milk this morning, just had enough for the cereal and drinks)

Lovelydovey · 16/09/2022 07:56

We buy 6 pints of milk and a loaf of bread each week with the big shop. If we run out (happens most weeks), one of us will pop to the local shops and get more (less than 5 mins walk there and back). That includes our 13 year old if he realises we’ve run out.

SushiGo · 16/09/2022 07:57

If you run out send the 16yo out to buy more.

They're probably just grumpy because they're hungry though. I think as adults we forget how all consuming that feeling of hunger as a growing teen can be!

Mindymomo · 16/09/2022 07:57

Sounds like my adult Son, who drinks milk by the pint, but never thinks is there enough for everyone else. I watched him the other day using all the milk on cereal. I have a white board on fridge with pen, that I ask family to write if we are running short of something, no they write other stuff. I do usually have one box of cereal open and another on top of cupboard. We are 4 adults and I get a supermarket delivery each Monday, but by Thursday we are out of bananas, oranges, bread and milk.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 16/09/2022 07:59

At 16yo he can go and get some more if you do run out surely??

MrsWombat · 16/09/2022 08:00

We have long life milk as emergency back up, and also buy the part baked rolls although they are more for lunch. Cereal we just try and keep one box ahead. Generally we do ok, but my kids are predictable on what they eat for breakfast. They will eat the same thing every day for 6 months then decide on something different.

Mammma91 · 16/09/2022 08:01

I seem to have enough cereal to feed the street for a week, at all times because my fussy toddler likes to chop and change everyday 😂. But I do seem to run out of bread - at the moment I’m buying a loaf every other day. So annoying waking with no bread, even though it’s my responsibility I still get irrationally annoyed by it!

DecayedStrumpet · 16/09/2022 08:01

Sounds like your teenager just volunteered to do a LOT more chores

He's treating you like a substandard service droid.

Marmite27 · 16/09/2022 08:01

No, when we run out of a box of cereal we open the spare from the cupboard. Once the ‘spare’ is open it gets replaced in that weeks shopping.

Milk we always have UHT in, and we don’t eat that much bread, however there’s always a couple of slices in the freezer. Again if we eat the freezer bread, the next time we buy a new loaf the freezer bread is replaced.

Caspianberg · 16/09/2022 08:02

No

part bake bread rolls in cupboard - lasts months, and loaf in freezer. Buy more part bake if you have no freezer space.

Milk, we buy fresh. Buy again mid week as fridge is small. Have some long life in cupboard incase of emergency ie ill and not got to shops. Use long life up in porridge if haven’t used when it’s near end date

Cereal. Always have extra. Buy oats in bulk, and make own granola and musli from those so there’s always something, even if flakes ran out.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/09/2022 08:04

Milk - delivered. Pretty much on top of this unless we have a lot of macaroni cheese, custard etc.

I am constantly buying bread and bananas.

Afterfire · 16/09/2022 08:04

Teen sounds ungrateful.

But we never run out. We usually pass a Tesco or supermarket every day so just pop in and buy stuff if we need to. We probably spend more than we could doing this though as we always end up buying snacks etc as well!

lljkk · 16/09/2022 08:04

We don't run out but we shop when we need to, so > we shop 1once a week.

My fridges (2) couldn't hold all the milk we get thru in one week.

DH is the only cereal eater so not an issue.

WensleydaleCrumbs · 16/09/2022 08:05

Yes! I don't eat cereal, it's just DH and the kids so I have no idea it's running low until someone complains there's none left!

I've told them to sort it out themselves! Nothing to do with me.
