Do you regularly run out of milk, bread, cereal etc?

Strange question but we get our shopping weekly and at some point we run out of these things before replacing them. As far as I'm concerned this is normal life but 16 year old ds1 gets moody and annoyed about this. Are me and dh idiots for not getting 'on top' of this problem or is he just a moody teen? I know this seems very petty but he's driving me mad at the moment🙄

Don't you do top up shops for milk, bread and anything that is used in large quantities? We go through 2x 4l milk every three days, so we go midweek for extra.

Pedallleur · 16/09/2022 12:32

you can see how much there is. if its getting low ie last bottle or half then mention it. otherwise the magic fairy that brings it all wont know until its too late.

Onandgrowing · 16/09/2022 12:36

No we don’t but dh & I are both pretty organised people + we don’t have teenagers yet.

Few things more judgmental than a teen setting themselves up for the next time the forget something. HNRTT but perhaps add a carton of UHT milk to keep in case fresh runs out. Some cereal decanted to a plastic container as a reserve. Bread in freezer.

I'm about to run out.

I bought a loaf yesterday and there are 2 slices and an outsider left. No idea who's eaten it all. It's literally just disappeared.

So I will run out.

Cleothecat75 · 16/09/2022 13:30

I don’t remember the last time we ran out of anything crucial like bread or milk. If I see they are getting low, I pop to do a top up shop or ask one of the teenage dc to pop in to the shop on their way home from school. They are eating the food, they can take some responsibility for buying the food (I pay them back, I mean the actual go in to the shop and get it).

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 16/09/2022 13:37

No we don't run out regularly. Occasionally it happens and we have a dash to the co op. But we generally always have those basics in.

clowerina · 16/09/2022 10:53

just buy double and freeze and / or store. It's not that hard. I use plant based milks and there are loads of non-fridge UHT ones that taste just as good as the cold ones and last ages in the cupboard (I stock up and buy 10 or more at a time so no mad dash to the shop!).

And if you don’t have space? And don’t like UHT/plant milks?

Why do you care if I send my 13 year old out to get some more milk?

Caspianberg · 16/09/2022 14:21

@ChiefWiggumsBoy - then I assume you have to shop more frequently

Caterina99 · 16/09/2022 14:24

No. But I’m very lucky that I have a spare fridge freezer in my garage so I always have extra bread in there.

We live rurally 20 min from the supermarket but there is a little shop in a nearby village 5 min drive away that sells the basics. I usually do a top up for milk there at some point if I’m not going to be in town for a few days. I think living far out makes you more organised as it is way more difficult for me to just pop out and get something than when I lived near 24 hour shops.

My kids are still quite young though so don’t get their own food. I’m sure the teenage years will be more difficult to manage the supplies!

willowstar · 16/09/2022 14:27

Like others, we now have our milk delivered three times a week so we don't tend to run out. We get bread delivered alongside it once a week and we have a bread maker. Everyone knows that they have to leave enough milk for me to have my coffee in the morning now though as the consequences of not doing so are not pretty ☺️

willowstar · 16/09/2022 14:34

Also ... I keep some part baked rolls in for if there has been a run on bread and I need something for the children's packed lunches. They have a decent expiry date on them, so handy to have a pack or two around.

LuckySantangelo35 · 16/09/2022 14:34

Besides tea/coffee and cereal what are you all doing with these pints and pints of milk per week?!

meatballsoup · 16/09/2022 14:35

Yes, every week we run out if cereal, snacks, bread, lots of other things. There are always a few 'creative' lunches & dinners. My freezer is as tiny as my food budget so once it's gone it's gone

Sprogonthetyne · 16/09/2022 14:43

We run out of bread or milk occasionally, but not every week. We normally have a few bottles of uht and some part baked baguette for when that happens. Cereal doesn't go off, so we normally have loads in, though might run out of someone's favourite.

Shiningstarr · 16/09/2022 14:58

Yes, we do. Perhaps I should be more organised and keep better stocks / freeze bread and milk.

If anything is running low I just nip to the shop for a top up.

onewhitepaw · 16/09/2022 15:21

LuckySantangelo35 · 16/09/2022 10:42

I wouldn’t be expecting to transfer the money back to them for a loaf of bread which they too will be eating

It’s your job as a parent to provide food for your children. You have a job and a salary I presume. Their job is to go to school, which they don’t get paid for.

frogswimming · 16/09/2022 15:21

RedFluffySofa · 16/09/2022 07:39

No. I keep milk and bread frozen - because who needs a shop run before their first proper coffee and toast.

Me too.

onewhitepaw · 16/09/2022 15:23

Ducksurprise · 16/09/2022 09:04

Yes and no, no because I go to the shop every day for milk, but there is no way I could buy enough milk to last the week (or bananas who wants brown banana's after 7 days)

Try Lakeland’s banana bag. Best invention in a long time.

mast0650 · 16/09/2022 15:30

To be honest, no, it's very rare. Unless suddenly people start making lots of unexpected cheese sauce, pancakes, hot chocolate etc. Even then we do have some back-up non-dairy milk. Bread we keep in the freezer and cereal I'm pretty good at checking stocks and each week buying another box of any cereal we don't have a full spare of (we don't use many).

mast0650 · 16/09/2022 15:31

PS We have milk delivered 3 times a week.

DigestiveDip · 16/09/2022 16:15

Yes, we run out. And I send teenagers to the shop to replace 😊

bigbadbarry · 16/09/2022 16:27

A weekly shop doesn't work for us - I get groceries delivered twice a week and I add milk, bread, cereal to the list as soon as we open the last one remaining

Decafflatteplease · 16/09/2022 16:28

We get bread and milk delivered 3 times a week so it's very rare we run out. We pay a bit more than the shops but it's reliable, and saves us popping out for a pint of milk and spending £20 🤣

Zingy123 · 16/09/2022 16:31

Never run out. Bread and milk I can understand you can't buy too much of incase it goes off. Cereal though why can't you buy multiple boxes?
