Do you regularly run out of milk, bread, cereal etc?

Strange question but we get our shopping weekly and at some point we run out of these things before replacing them. As far as I'm concerned this is normal life but 16 year old ds1 gets moody and annoyed about this. Are me and dh idiots for not getting 'on top' of this problem or is he just a moody teen? I know this seems very petty but he's driving me mad at the moment🙄

We don't run out- I've had long periods in my life where buying food was an issue so just the idea stresses me out.

There's two issues here though:

  1. why aren't you and your husband planning a bit better so you don't run out/ do a top up shop
  2. even if his complaint is valid, the attitude that goes with it isn't so he needs to reign it in

No I never run-out of the basics. You sound quite disorganised, sorry. You can freeze bread and buy cravendale so it lasts longer. Cereal is so cheap ,(supermarkets own brand) I buy a few and store them in the garage.

InsertPunHere · 16/09/2022 16:57

Run out of milk and bread and cereal regularly.

If DH is WFH he makes several hundred cups of tea a day (I drink water) but if he's in the office obviously we don't need as much and there's no schedule to that.

If DS2 is home from uni it's 4 weetabix every morning and a pint and a half of milk. If DS1 is on nights, no cereal but if he's diurnal he had masses of cereal. We double the milk order when we know he'll be home.

DD goes through phases of wanting milk and a biscuit or hot cocoa when it's cold, then through "dairy products are evil, my body is a temple" phases. It's hard to keep up.

I don't eat cereal so don't know we need it unless someone puts it on the list. They almost never put it on the list - not until every box of every brand has run out 🙄

Sometimes the teens are in a Stuff On Toast phase and we go through a loaf in 2 days, sometimes they aren't and the bread goes mouldy..

I'd rather buy what we need (and send the teens/YA for a top up at the Co-op 2 minutes away) than buy lots and have it go off.

Yes to bread as one loaf isn't quite enough but buying tow at once 1 would go mouldy before I could use it. Milk we seem to alternate between having too much and running out by no discernible pattern, so taken to buying the minimum we get through and topping up if required. I do usually notice and get more before it runs out though.

FinallyHere · 16/09/2022 17:00

1 would go mouldy before I could use it

Bread keeps very well in the freezer. We use it straight from the freezer, either toast from frozen or left out it defrosts in ten minutes.

Game changer

DelilahBucket · 16/09/2022 17:10

We never run out of these things. Can't you just buy more? You must know how much you use. It doesn't even need to go in the freezer as it will last more than a week if need be. Same with bread. I make my own now but even when I bought, a loaf wouldn't go off by the end of the week.

lljkk · 16/09/2022 18:09

i don't have a freezer or want one...

ScampiFlies · 16/09/2022 18:18

Sometimes but there's a shop on the edge of our estate, also I keep either powder milk or uht in the cupboard so we don't have to run out to the shop before morning caffeine drink.

Byeckythump · 16/09/2022 18:21

We never run out, but often need more milk than we buy in the big weekly shop so pop into a local shop on the way back from the school run.

Maybe have a jar of 'petty cash' so he can go and get bits himself as they run out, might reduce the whining (which would also drive me mad).

notacooldad · 16/09/2022 18:24

I regularly run out of those things but I'm not bothered that I do.

Wouldrathergoonholiday · 16/09/2022 18:28

We run out of milk and bread, although no one would be bothered about the bread, could take or leave it. Never cereal as always 2 or 2 boxes on the go.
Milk we use more than I can buy in one go, few pints a day. Running out of milk is really annoying, I should be more organised.

gogohmm · 16/09/2022 18:30

No because I pick up things as needed keeping some in reserve eg always a spare pack butter, we live very close to the supermarket

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 16/09/2022 18:35

Never run out of cereal, granted there are no teens in our house, and there's always bread in the freezer. But we have to top up with milk sometimes, plus occasionally what we have in goes off so we are milkless. How far is the nearest shop? If there's a corner shop in the vicinity he can be in charge of getting fresh milk when necessary.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 16/09/2022 18:41

Yeah all the time. We can't predict how much we'll get through as it depends on who's around. The shop is a 5 minute walk. I've never thought of it as an issue.

SleepingAgent · 16/09/2022 20:30

Very rarely, only run out of bread if teen has had an occasional toast binge and not told me.
I shop more than once a week and we have a magnetic list on the fridge for things running low.

BiddyPop · 16/09/2022 21:14

I used to do all the shopping and manage it so we didn't run out. But Dd hit teen years and between hating me and needing to control the food she eats, I am no longer the filler of the fridge.

Well, I am. It's my fault if essentials are gone.

But Dd and Dh do a lot of the shopping and I am not to go shopping because "I get it wrong".

so I just try and keep milk there always, part baked bread in the cupboard for emergencies, and a pack of DD's preferred porridge sachets in my emergency cupboard so I can grab 1 if she runs out and doesn't tell me.

And otherwise stay out of the kitchen while both of them are there in the mornings.

plinkplinkfizzer · 17/09/2022 03:00

No never there would be a riot if we ran out of milk . Do you never pass a shop daily to top up ?

BloodyCamping · 17/09/2022 03:09

That’s what legs are for! Give him a fiver and he can walk to the shop to buy bread and milk

TwoShades1 · 17/09/2022 04:57

Very occasionally we might run out of bread. Normally because I planned to get some but then something happened which meant I wasn’t able to. We sometimes run out of kids favourite cereal, but there is usually at least 2 other cereal choices available. I think running out regularly is odd as surely you know roughly how much you go through on a daily/weekly basis.

Roselilly36 · 17/09/2022 05:09

Never run out of essentials here, always have a good supply, makes life easier.

mathanxiety · 17/09/2022 05:26

@Ducksurprise
You can freeze bananas and make banana bread or pancakes out of them.

inappropriateraspberry · 17/09/2022 05:29

You shouldn't be running out. Either buy more with the weekly shop or get more when you know it's running low, depending on storage space. This is just poor planning.

loeweviva · 17/09/2022 05:29

No, don't you just check the essentials as you use them and top up from a local shop? I also keep a pint and bread in the freezer. He's 16, can he not do this himself or are you going to be his inefficient concierge forever? I hated being brought up in a messy home, mine is now spotless, I wonder if your son will have an immaculately stocked kitchen when he has his own one.

Twilightimmortal · 17/09/2022 05:41

Yes!

MrsRhodes · 17/09/2022 05:42

If it was left to me I would forever forget (and would then be grumpy as I couldn't have my morning coffee!), as it is DH remembers 99% of the time.
