Can't afford the Tooth Fairy

OfAllTheDaysToday · 14/09/2022 17:48

I am not looking for handouts, just want someone to tell me what a w*nk parent I am. I get paid in 12 days' time. Have had an unexpected £400 drop in income this month, and dd (5)'s tooth fell out today. I don't have £2 to put under her pillow. Heck, I don't even have 50p to put under her pillow! She is so excited, and it's her second tooth so she knows the "going rate". I have a £10 Aldi gift card to cover the next 12 days, and have not been able to pay my non-priority bills, so next month will be super expensive trying to play catch up. I'm claiming everything I'm entitled to, but don't receive maintenance for the dc's. I feel like I've royally messed up, and my new higher direct debit for energy starts on payday too. I don't feel like I'll ever catch up again. Just feel utterly rubbish.

Tooth fairy sometimes couldn't get in because we hadn't left a window open.

SecondsAreTheBest · 14/09/2022 20:55

DD and me read in a book about the girl losing her teeth that the tooth fairy only comes for the first tooth. In the book her parents tell her that she can keep all the other teeth that fall out subsequently and put them into little match boxes (or hankies or something) that she can decorate beautifully herself.

Cupofteaonesugar · 14/09/2022 20:57

Why don't you make a golden coin and make a big deal out fo it saying the tooth fairy only gives golden coins to really white teeth?
Not sure how you could make such coin... but pintrest might no!
Or something similar :)

You could say the tooth fairy is on guard at the moment looking after the Queen!

ODFOx · 14/09/2022 21:00

You need a really sharp pencil and your tiniest writing. A message from the tooth fairy explaining about coins and gifts and good wishes and about how only the most wonderful and lucky children get a mixture of these is the way to go. Then a tightly rolled tiny note tied with a tiny ribbon (aka a hanger loop cut from an item of your clothing) saying that she is loved becomes as magical as a polished coin or a toy from the pound shop. £2 coin! What were you thinking? As long as it's well polished it could be a tuppence! Fairies are tiny and can't carry much you know!

You’re not a wank mum, you sound like a great mum 😊

iolaus · 14/09/2022 21:05

The tooth fairy once gave my youngest a trolley coin

And once I forgot and his elder sister told him that as it was 6am maybe the tooth fairy hadn't finished her shift yet as when I do night shifts they don't finish till 7 - she then replaced the tooth with a pound while he was in the loo and told me I owed her the money

JenniferWooley · 14/09/2022 21:06

OP if you were close by I'd drop the money off - I've often had to send a frantic "fuck does anyone have a £1 coin for the tooth fairy??" 10pm text to my local friends when I've discovered I've no suitable money in my purse!

AdoraBell · 14/09/2022 21:07

If family/friends can’t give /lend you the money write a note from Tooth Fairy. Either explaining that so many families are struggling or saying she run out of change as she’s been sooooo busy and she’ll leave £2 in Mum’s bag/under her pillow next month.

AdoraBell · 14/09/2022 21:09

oh genius idea to say Tooth Fairy is guarding the Queen.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 14/09/2022 21:11

Our tooth fairy once completely forgot to leave any money but the tooth had gone (I suspect wriggly child knocked it from under the pillow). Of course I sneakily grabbed a pound out of my purse…and “helped” said child look for the coin under the bed and mysteriously found it under there 😆. To be fair my tooth fairy skills were shit.

you’ve had lots of good ideas OP and I can’t add anymore.

Utterly brilliant

TabithaTittlemouse · 14/09/2022 21:55

@EdPsychonaQuest that’s heartbreaking!

Op, just use the 10 pence. At such a young age any coin is exciting!
Stories of guarding the queen and cost of living are funny but so depressing for such a young child.

I used to type up and print out letters from the tooth fairy as well as leave a pound. Seemed lovely to start with but I quickly regretted it as the years went past as dd would write a letter and leave it under her pillow with the tooth and ask a million questions that I then had to try and answer .

Thank you all for being so, so lovely. Your ideas are so wonderful!

I found 2 50p coins in the junk drawer in the kitchen and she was over the moon with them; apparently they are the biggest coins she has ever seen, and the glitter added to it. She even said "I heard her twinkling on her way in Mummy, I really did". Thank you all xxx

So many times I had to scrabble around for tooth fairy money! Use the £2 out of her penny jar for now.

You do what you have to do!

AdoraBell · 15/09/2022 11:39

Glad you found the big coins 🤣

sarahc336 · 15/09/2022 12:43
