Can't afford the Tooth Fairy

OfAllTheDaysToday · 14/09/2022 17:48

I am not looking for handouts, just want someone to tell me what a w*nk parent I am. I get paid in 12 days' time. Have had an unexpected £400 drop in income this month, and dd (5)'s tooth fell out today. I don't have £2 to put under her pillow. Heck, I don't even have 50p to put under her pillow! She is so excited, and it's her second tooth so she knows the "going rate". I have a £10 Aldi gift card to cover the next 12 days, and have not been able to pay my non-priority bills, so next month will be super expensive trying to play catch up. I'm claiming everything I'm entitled to, but don't receive maintenance for the dc's. I feel like I've royally messed up, and my new higher direct debit for energy starts on payday too. I don't feel like I'll ever catch up again. Just feel utterly rubbish.

Imo £2 is for the first tooth and 10p thereafter...! We do 50p a tooth even though can afford more.

Hopeandlove · 14/09/2022 18:57

A present or just an apology that she is trying to pay her respects to the queen and is morning :-) joke.

Can you write backwards on a piece of paper (mirror writing) and write a nice note and say that the tooth fairy is looking at other fun things and would she appreciate a nice trip to the park instead? I would willingly send you the 50p!

MuggleMe · 14/09/2022 18:57

Oh gosh I love the idea the tooth fairies are following the official mourning period! Not sure little kids would understand/be happy about it.

The Tooth Fairy has tested positive so won't be able to come tonight.

CaptainBarbosa · 14/09/2022 19:00

Oh OP you've reminded me of the time that I genuinely didn't have a £1 coin to put under DS pillow.

I told him that the tooth fair had phoned in sick with covid, and she was working from home right now. So to keep the tooth somewhere safe and as soon as she returns to work, she would come round 🤣

I would even make it from the tooth fairy as she has a broken wing and can't fly!!

Greenfrog78 · 14/09/2022 19:01

Make a book of vouchers.with loads of glitter and colours. Playdate with mummy at park, making cakes, painting nails and pamper session with mum.

CaptainBarbosa · 14/09/2022 19:01

Oh also I never had money for the ice cream van, so told DS when they play the music it's to let people know they've run out of ice cream 🤣🤣🤣

tempester28 · 14/09/2022 19:02

Just put something under the pillow - it doesn't have to be money! I would borrow the £2 from her money box to keep the magic alive if necessary! don't feel bad about it.

BeginningBridge · 14/09/2022 19:02

My mother used to write notes from the Tooth Fairy in mirror writing - we were always very excited to receive the messages (and sometimes wrote back). I have no memory of any money (there probably was 10p or something) but can remember the notes really well.

Choccyoclocky · 14/09/2022 19:07

I keep £1 in my bedroom specifically for any teeth! I've recycled the same £1 for about 7 teeth (over 2 children). Keeping it in my bedroom means it doesn't get accidentally spent and it is much easier to remember to put it out!

sarahc336 · 14/09/2022 19:09

My mum has since admitted she'd take pounds out of out penny bank all the time for the tooth fairy 😂 she'd get caught out with no change and an unexpected tooth out. Op you sound a great mum and your clearly doing a great job, do not fret this kind of thing!! X

DelphiniumBlue · 14/09/2022 18:12

Lots of good ideas here... but remember, the tooth fairy always leaves more for the first tooth, the subsequent teeth don't have to be at the same rate.
I was reliably informed today that £1 is perfectly acceptable.

I do £1 but I also use to get £1 in the 80's tooth fairy needs to up her game!

CaramelTwirl · 14/09/2022 19:11

Won't your parents help you out?

loeweviva · 14/09/2022 19:12

Write a note saying she broken her wing and the tooth fairy doctor said she can't carry a heavy coin for a few weeks but she will bring it when she's better!

greystarblanchard · 14/09/2022 19:12

Leave a note from the “tooth fairy” saying they will make sure to bring her something in a few weeks as there is trouble at the tooth fairy factory… something like that 😂

MsJuniper · 14/09/2022 19:13

I didn't have change once and raided DS's piggybank. I think it's ok unless they are the type to count it regularly!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2022 19:13

Time to downgrade to £1 per tooth

first always gets more

or borrow the £2 from her piggy bank

Favouritefruits · 14/09/2022 19:14

Find some ribbon and shine that 10p like it’s gold, wrap it in the ribbon add a bit of glitter under her pillow and she’ll be thrilled as can be.

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/09/2022 19:14

I once ran out of change.. got the tooth fairy to leave a note with 50p ( was usually £1) saying she was disappointed tooth wasn't shiny and clean.. we were having teeth cleaning issues.. made him think.

My friend also left her ds a toothbrush and toothpaste for similar reasons

NoMoreChubRub · 14/09/2022 19:16

Yep just use her jar money and replace. Also when you do get paid keep £1 coin in your drawer for the next one.
Our tooth fairy was awful.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 14/09/2022 19:18

Write a note from the tooth fairy saying that she’s working hard to polish all the coins so that they are extra shiny for the queen and they will soon stop making coins with the queen so now they are now extra special, and she will deliver a shiny coin as soon as she’s finished her polishing.

Then all you have to do is find a shiny coin when you get paid.

GoTeamRocket · 14/09/2022 19:21

It is so lovely to hear that the tooth fairy is unreliable in other households too.

The tooth fairy was due to visit when we had no coins and we all had covid. I managed to find a little stocking filler gift that I hid away and my DS was thrilled.

Op I really hope things look up.fot you, it sounds like a really difficult month.

mumwon · 14/09/2022 19:21

make out a "cheque" using computer and printer and put it with ten pence - and a little note saying it will be used from mummy bank in x period time

quietnightmare · 14/09/2022 19:21

OfAllTheDaysToday · 14/09/2022 17:55

You are all brilliant, thank you. I haven't got anyone to borrow it from (and tbh I'm terrified of borrowing money from anyone) but have definitely got a 10p in my coat pocket! Dd does have £2 in her moneybox from her first tooth. Would it be horrific if I put that under there for tonight and then topped it up properly on payday? I would feel like I was stealing.

100 percent. Stay strong op and don't worry
