So the question is, would you join it? I’m just not very patient and don’t think I could do it!

it doesn't matter much if peoplee on MN don't get 'worked up' about children missing school for this, I suppose it's up to the school to decide what they're going to do. If the parents rang in sick then the children are back in school talking about the queuing and the coffin later this week, that may raise some eyebrows in the staff room. Grin

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 10:39

Maybe the parents just told the school " we're going to pay our respects to the Queen".

And took it on the chin. And like you say not up to MN. Up to the school.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 10:40

There was a headmistress interviewed in the early stages of the queue. Posters mentioned it on here. 🤷‍♀️

Was that the headmistress who went on behalf of the school? 😁

Apparently.

No idea. I don’t suppose every parent said the same thing.

Apparently.

That made me think it was a ‘I’m going so you don’t have to’ message to the parents and children. 😁

No idea. I don’t suppose every parent said the same thing.

But as opposed to ringing in sick , I think they'll be parents just acknowledging what they're doing.

Obviously none of us know.

Me and teen DD were musing this - if you were working age, wouldn't you be working, if you were school age you'd be at school and if you were older than retirement age we thought you might not be up for standing/camping out etc for hours/days!
I saw people with tiny children in pushchairs, I can't imagine entertaining a small child in a queue that long! (Maybe my children were more annoying than others!🤣)

Yes that was my thoughts-you need to be able to clear your diary for a couple of days (and possibly a night) to be able to do this, but so many people have been able to do it and at reasonably short notice.
Plus a day off next week as well.

TeenDivided · 15/09/2022 11:01

Lots of people work shifts / have days off in the week.

Other people have jobs that allow them to take time off at short notice, I could have done when working if I didn't have meetings as I worked on long projects rather than things with 2hr turn around times.

Plenty of older people are still fit and healthy, and maybe have more patience than some of the young.

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2022 11:02

Are there three lines coming down the left hand steps now? So there's effectively a front (and better) row? Has someone said to speed things up?

Mooserp · 15/09/2022 11:09

Just out of interest, I checked the queue tracker earlier this morning and it was 2 miles long, it is now 3.5 miles!

StellaAndCrow · 15/09/2022 11:13

I'm concerned that people don't look like they've wrapped up very warm, considering the time they're queuing for! I'd be there in layers of coats, jumpers, hats and scarfs!

Last night us in the North & Midlands were worried but were told it's warm and toasty in London...

TeenDivided · 15/09/2022 11:16

At ~2.2 miles it seemed to be getting on for an 8hr wait.
So my estimate for people joining now at 3.5 miles is 12hrs.

StellaAndCrow · 15/09/2022 11:18

Ah thank you Sparkling, I'm in the North :) :)

I'm in the Midlands. Brrrr. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2022 11:20

Whoever is interviewing people in the queue on ITV now says the wait is 8-10 hours currently and the queue is the longest it's been up til now.

StellaAndCrow · 15/09/2022 11:20

It's very meditative to watch isn't it. I like the mover-onners, you get to know exactly when they're going to approach people to move on.
How often to they change the guards? One of them looked like he was shaking, so I was worried about him too!! :)

It’s like ASMR. Every twenty minutes when you hear the clonk it’s guard changeover time.

StellaAndCrow · 15/09/2022 11:22

Oh they're changing again, it's only been 20 mins, this is the opposite of what I was worried about!

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2022 11:23

Apparently it gets closed for an hour each night for cleaning. Sweep of the floor I guess.

StellaAndCrow · 15/09/2022 11:23

I think even I could stand still for 20 mins, though not sure about managing the furry hat.

I love the guard changes! The sound of them marching, the instructional clink of the staff on the floor, the slow way they turn those staffs the right way up... there is something very calming about it all.

the gentle shuffling sounds and respectful silence of the crowd is lovely too.
