So the question is, would you join it? I’m just not very patient and don’t think I could do it!

@IHateWasps. Maybe you have been.

Not unless I've gone temporarily insane. No. I'd sooner chew my limbs off.

Looking at it on tv though, it looks remarkably like a queue.

Weren't they discouraging people from bowing yesterday because it held the line up? At least that's what some reported on MN. I guess it's impossible to allow everyone more than a second or two because of the numbers but it looks utterly soulless because they have so little time. Perhaps the atmosphere makes up for it in person though.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 08:27

Perhaps the atmosphere makes up for it in person though.

That's what they're saying.

The opposite of 'soulless' apparently.

TeenDivided · 15/09/2022 08:28

Seeing the interviews with people who have just left the hall it seems to be the very opposite of soulless.

theDudesmummy · 15/09/2022 08:29

It's a queue of course but it's not "just a queue". The idea that it is a raison d'être in itself, an essential feature of the cultural ritual, is exactly the point I was making.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/09/2022 08:34

Each side of the split around the coffin now gets split in two again, so 4 people at any one time stopping to pay their respects. Makes it less interesting to watch (too much going on!) and looks messy, but has obviously doubled the capacity at the pinch point.

Queue is actually longer now though, possibly people realising it wouldn't be a 30 hour wait and that it could easily be done overnight, and still clearing the backlog due to it being closed for an hour for cleaning (which I believe will happen every night).

the80sweregreat · 15/09/2022 08:58

What is that momument outside the Westminster hall ? I'm
Watching the news now on tv and can see it.

stillherenow · 15/09/2022 08:59

I'm not sure the family will find comfort in this. William and Harry have been quite clear they found the outpouring of grief over their mother obscene and ridiculous. I'm sure they just want to be left alone.

theDudesmummy · 15/09/2022 09:02

@stillherenow that was very different though. What is happening now has been long-planned in great detail, not least by the queen herself.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2022 09:02

It's amazing the breadth and variety of people.

Just all sorts. A lot wearing black but everything else as well. All ages. A few kids. And I've just had it on with my coffee.

Little boy in a puffa jacket bowing. It's fascinating. Baby in a carrier now!

It's not for me but its mesmerising. There is a part of me that would like the experience.

But that queue sorts out the chancers like me!

Couldn't disagree more.

theDudesmummy · 15/09/2022 09:06

And this part is not for the comfort of the family. It is a public ritual because she was the monarch, an important historical and cultural event, whatever your view of royalty. Part of the price people pay for being royalty is that they are not just people/a family, there is the aspect of public service, of which this lying in state for the public is a part.

theDudesmummy · 15/09/2022 09:12

@stillherenow I also don't see the kind of hysteria that the term "outpouring of grief" implies. I was standing in the crowds outside Kensington Palace when Diana's coffin came out (not a royalist by any means but interested in the event itself as part of culture), I heard people hysterically screaming "Diana!" and wailing as the coffin passed. That was frankly ridiculous, I absolutely agree. That's not what is happening now. I see quiet respect (either for the queen herself, or for tradition/history), interest in history being made, and some sadness, probably more for the passing of an era rather than the peaceful death of a very old lady.

I don’t think you can assume to know.

The Queen was part of arranging it all in any case.

the80sweregreat · 15/09/2022 09:29

Princess Diana's death was a total shock to everyone and still causes controversy today.
The passing of an elderly lady of 96 with mobility issues isn't as much of a shock to anyone and I hope it was peaceful for her.
This is the big difference.
If people get something from a visit and a long wait then good for them! They are Hardy souls.

Does anyone know
re this automated bot thingy

what's the purpose of the "what 3 words"? Thanks.

Yes.

I'm looking at those people and thinking "you queued through the night for 8 hrs! "

AnyFucker · 15/09/2022 09:33

So many children obviously missing up to 2 days of school 😵‍💫

EmmaH2022 · 15/09/2022 09:33

Oh I just answered my own question

Yes I agree with this, I find it crazy but it's not actually offensive in the way the response to Diana's death was.

Also agree these are hardy souls, I couldn't do it .

Yes, not sure if those fines apply for this. 🤔

ehhhh can't get worked up about that tbh.. Loads of people pull their lids out of school for things like holidays etc

I like how the guards appear to fall asleep instantaneously when they take up their turn at the vigil. They rest on their sword/staff and bow their heads, and look like they're snoozing.

Yes, I should think the atmosphere and shared interest and "comradery" with others makes it worthwhile.

I'm sure it looks soulless watching people mooch about the Sistine Chapel or whatever, but doesn't mean it isn't worth doing etc

TeenDivided · 15/09/2022 10:27

Does the length of the queue include all the zigzags or only one side of them?
