Hi I’m doing party bags for a dcs birthday and rather than having any issues with the sweets in the bags i want to make all of them halal sweets so there’s no issue with who gets what,

I’ve heard skittles are halal are their any other good party bag sweets that are appropriate for everyone ?

Are you going to tell everybody they are halal then because a lot of people will not like it. I would t want my kids eating that

Do your kids not eat potatoes? They're halal. Or vegetables. Milk. Chocolate. And a plethora of other items.

Halal literally just means it hasn't been made from animals slaughtered in a certain way. Anything vegetarian is halal, because it does not contain animal products and therefore doesn't contain anything from animals slaughtered in a certain way.

Blimey. I can't believe people are so thick. And so openly bigoted.

Often when most refer to “halal sweets” we usually mean meat free (vegetarian) or non pork gelatine. As for HALAL GELATINE, this is usually really difficult to prove that it is indeed halal gelatine, that’s why many just prefer vegetarian sweets.
Also, most Muslims eating out or at parties etc, usually refer to all vegetarian food as halal too. Including eggs dairy etc. halal doesn’t just mean halal slaughtered animals in general talk, it means is it permissible to eat. So yes, in that context even water is HALAL, so anyone avoiding halal foods/beverages avoid water at all costs.

You’ve never eaten a vegetable or piece of fruit?
or bread?

how do you live with such a madly restricted diet? Genuinely intrigued as to what a typical mealtime is at yours

I'm assuming pork In a soup of alcohol. And non halal Haribo for dessert.

The Halal method of slaughter is highly problematic for me as a vegetarian atheist.

It requires a prayer to be said during the slaughter (usually broadcast over loudspeakers on a loop in the abattoir). This enforces religious practice in a workplace which IMO is inappropriate.

It also means the animal has no form of stun prior to slaughter which is even more cruel than standard slaughter practices.

Personally I'd go for the treat size packs.

Either the Cadbury ones. Or box of celebration/ heroes. I think chocolate is always appreciated

I don't think anyone has a an issue with someone, especially a vegetarian, not agreeing with the slaughter method. For non- vegetarian there may be a touch of hypocrisy there. But those showing disgust at halal sweets aren't coming from a place of concerns about animal cruelty, are they?

Looking at the packaging of every single packet of Halal sweets I have at home, I can confirm that all of them also state they are vegetarian/vegan.

But not all halal sweets are vegetarian. Haribo do a range of halal sweets that contain beef gelatine.

This is a list of ingredients for Haribo Halal Tropifrutti Bag 100g:

Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Beef Gelatine (Halal), Acid: Citric Acid, Fruit and Plant Concentrates: Safflower, Spirulina, Apple, Carrot, Blueberry, Elderberry, Blackcurrant, Orange, Kiwi, Lemon, Aronia, Mango, Passion Fruit, Grape, Flavouring, Elderberry Extract, Glazing Agents: White and Yellow Beeswax, Carnauba Wax, Caramelised Sugar Syrup, Invert Sugar Syrup

@Ohdearthatwasntgreatwasit Not wanting to eat anything made from a dead animal is something that I totally understand. Not wanting to eat something because someone said a prayer over it - seriously? I think you are really over thinking it. I cannot get worked up over a piece of food that has had a prayer said over it.

The issue I have with the prayer is that it is an example of religious practices being forced upon those of different belief systems.

To a very large extent, abattoir workers have little choice over their employment so have to just put up with it.

It certainly used to be the case that job seekers could be sanctioned for refusing all work, even in abattoirs with this religious enforcement. You’d have to agree that under any other circumstances, this would never be seen as acceptable, but in the pursuit of halal slaughter, it’s somehow deemed to be ok.

I seem to remember the dwp sanction process was being challenged in respect of abattoirs, but I confess I’m not sure how that panned out.

Ohdearthatwasntgreatwasit · 13/09/2022 22:17

…and fwiw, a lot of vegetarianism is due to animal welfare concerns, not simply ‘not wanting to eat a dead animal’.

Having been vegetarian for most of my life, I’m not sure if I personally could ever eat meat again, but had animals actually been treated with respect and kindness at slaughter, I may never have turned vegetarian at all.

Anyway…

Ive done party bags to allow for Muslim kids for a few years now. If you go to Poundland there’s lots of choice. The multi bags of Million sweets, the mini chuppa chups, little kinder bars and mini packs of party rings are all fine, and shouldn’t set you back much 😊
