Notbeinfunnehbut · 13/09/2022 10:12

Hi I’m doing party bags for a dcs birthday and rather than having any issues with the sweets in the bags i want to make all of them halal sweets so there’s no issue with who gets what,

I’ve heard skittles are halal are their any other good party bag sweets that are appropriate for everyone ?

Swizzles rainbow drops and double lollies are vegetarian and I think dairy free too.

Wigeon · 13/09/2022 11:47

@blockpavingismynightmare@justaladyLOL - I think you are both confusing halal meat, with halal food in general. “Halal” means foods that Muslims consider not to be forbidden. That therefore encompasses probably almost all the food in your kitchen if you are non-Muslim - apples, yoghurt, chickpeas, carrots, fruit juice, loads and loads of other food.

Some meat is potentially permitted (eg chicken, sheep), and some meat is completely forbidden (haram), eg pigs and some others animals largely not eaten in the UK. For the permitted meat, there are also additional rules about how it’s slaughtered, in order for it to be considered halal.

You can’t therefore say that you won’t eat halal food - loads of your diet as a non-Muslim is halal. You might perhaps mean that you have an issue with the specifics of halal slaughtering process - in which case you need to be much more informed about that in order to have a serious discussion about that before posting on a thread like this.

@tulips27

Why wouldn't a vegetarian sweet be halal?

Someone upthread said: “Once again this is not true, halal sweets contain beef gelatine they are not vegetarian, vegetarian is vegetarian, halal is halal beef gelatine”

OP, do let everyone know that the sweets are veggie as otherwise veggies and Muslim guests might just assume they can’t eat them.

Once again this is not true, halal sweets contain beef gelatine they are not vegetarian, vegetarian is vegetarian halal is halal beef gelatine

Looking at the packaging of every single packet of Halal sweets I have at home, I can confirm that all of them also state they are vegetarian/vegan.

Dontsayanything · 13/09/2022 11:55

Why would your kids not eat halal??There is nothing wrong with it.What are you teaching your kids?

Stickmansmum · 13/09/2022 11:56

justaladyLOL · 13/09/2022 10:46

"Are you going to tell everybody they are halal then because a lot of people will not like it. I would t want my kids eating that
Why? Confused"
Because I am not a muslim
I will not have my kids being told they have to follow someone else's culture

Speechless.

That doesn't mean that they all are though. I've seen plenty that contain fish or beef gelatine and I just posted a pic of a halal packet of sweets that contains beef gelatine.

Some will be both but just being halal doesn’t mean vegetarian this is haribo gold bears

Some people will disagree even when you show them proof in black and white that halal doesn’t equal vegetarian

Nightmare!!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/09/2022 11:43

What about food colouring made from the cochineal beetle?

That wouldn't be halal or vegetarian, so they wouldn't be labelled as such.

SallyWD · 13/09/2022 12:15

My DC have several Muslim friends and they always say they can have anything vegetarian. I see the Cadbury sweets are suitable for vegetarians - so you can buy those party bag size packs of chocolate buttons, twirls etc.

blockpavingismynightmare · 13/09/2022 11:35

I would not want anything Halal in my house let alone in my mouth. Not my thing and never will be. Lots of reasons but I'm not a drum banger

You’ve never eaten a vegetable or piece of fruit?
or bread?

how do you live with such a madly restricted diet? Genuinely intrigued as to what a typical mealtime is at yours

Crikey you must have a phenomenally restricted diet.

What do you drink? You one water is halal so you just the thirsty.

WhiteFire · 13/09/2022 12:38

I just go for chocolate, rather than sweets (made that rookie mistake once).

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/09/2022 13:27

PMSL at the racists. They didn't have to come on this thread to demonstrate their stupidity, but their racism was too strong.😆😆😆

Oh, dear! Grin

I know that there are lots of replies to this narrow minded comment but my Muslim driving instructor often picks up a meal deal from Tesco during my lesson. Obviously he avoids the ham and cheese as hat would not be Halal! But the point is he choses something not Haram. But I expect none of this will change the poster's mind and she will no doubt be angry if her child ever receives a pack of Haribo Gold Bears in a party bag.

SaharaSahara · 13/09/2022 13:43

Starburst and Haribo strawberries 🍓 are good ones

Anothernamechangeplease · 13/09/2022 13:49

FFS, the ignorance on this thread is unreal!Shock

I hope that the stupid posts from @noclothesinbed and @justaladyLOL are not deleted though. Ignorance and prejudice deserve to be exposed for exactly what they are.

Anothernamechangeplease · 13/09/2022 13:51

Lol and @blockpavingismynightmare is another one.

@MNHQ, please don't delete the stupid posts. Let them stand so that we can all see the extent of their ignorance.

Hillsidehigh · 13/09/2022 13:53

Halal simply means allowed or permitted. Water is halal, there are some utter fuckwits on this thread

Horcruxe · 13/09/2022 13:56

Damnautocorrect · 13/09/2022 11:40

i wasn’t going to mention it as I knew it would derail ops thread. And jelly tots are her answer.

But I am a vegetarian in a family of carnivores. We don’t eat halal as I don’t agree with the longer killing process, there’s also no way of knowing if it was stunned or not stunned prior.

it’s not racism to not agree with the process

If you're a vegetarian everything you eat or drink that doesnt contain alcohol is classed as halal.

So you have an excellent diet already if you did want to be a muslim!👍🏽

Madamecastafiore · 13/09/2022 14:06

Most hilarious post, being offended by halal haribo 😂

Madamecastafiore · 13/09/2022 14:22

full list of halal and haram haribo just in case you are interested.

ThanksItHasPockets · 13/09/2022 15:05

Hairdo Giant Strawbs and Giant Strawbs Gone Mini are vegetarian and therefore also halal. They are widely available and my usual go-to. They are sometimes mistakenly listed as vegan but they contain beeswax and therefore are not.
