Things I'm embarrassed to have realised so late in life...

Those ID necklaces? I had absolutely never heard of the word "lanyard" until around 3 years ago. All my friend's children learnt this way before I did. If you had told me "Lanyard" was a European city - I'd have believed you.

That little press send arrow in the top right hand corner? It only occurred to me in my mid 30s that it is in fact a paper aeroplane. I just thought it was a dodgy triangle.

I was absolutely stunned to find out the woman who plays Amanda in Motherland is not Catherine Tate.

Any confessions to console me I'm not the only one failing at life?! 😃

It was only a couple of years ago I learned Greenland is much colder than Iceland. In fact it’s about 80 percent of Greenland covered in ice v 11 percent of Iceland.

Iceland is actually very green and Greenland has very little green,it’s covered in ice.

I had no idea until recently that in "hyperbole" the e is pronounced. I thought it was more like "hy-per-bowl".

You're in good company - recently Nadim Zahawi pronounced it as hyper-bowl!

But to be fair, English is not his first language.

IslaRoseGraceEtc · 11/09/2022 18:21

You can count on us we're the numberblocks

Just cottoned on recently that they mean you can use them as a counting aid . . .

@Dou8hnuts 10 minutes from me! Hello, fellow Sheffielder.

I didn't know that New Zealand is made up of seperate islands, is that common knowledge?

I would have thought so but I had a colleague who has never left the UK and had absolutely no idea where Bristol was. Just didn't know which general area it was. I find that level of lack of basic geographical knowledge extraordinary.

@mnahmnah
It really is THINK which makes no sense to.me at all tbh .
I think.most people have got it wrong just like us.

It does make sense @flapjackfairy - see previous posts where we’ve explained the full saying

I thought that when they said in Parliament eyes to the right and nose to the left. That the MPs had to turn their heads like point their eyes one to the left and tip your nose to the right.

Didn't realise there was separate gates to go through and it was indeed ayes as in yes to the right and Nos as in disagreemen to go through the other gate.

When they had 50,374 votes about different stuff for Brexit if the vote was in favour of the Tory’s a Tory man read the result, if it was a No (against what Tory’s wanted) a Labour person read the result

I thought Cavalier King Charles spaniels were so called because they looked like King Charles (a previous one!) with floppy hair/ears not because he had some 🤣

@mnahmnah have a look at the link at the top of the screenshot you posted.

“Another thing coming" dates later, which suggests that thing is an eggcorn of think. It probably originated in speech with the misapprehension of the "k" in think as being the "c" in coming, which leaves something that sounds suspiciously like "thing coming."

It may be one of those things where so many people have got it wrong it’s now considered OK, but that doesn’t make it correct!

It’s like ‘Dull as dishwater’ was originally ‘Dull as ditchwater’, but both now seem acceptable.

Within the last 5 years that I realised that Washington DC wasn’t in Washington state.

I'd had 4 kids before I found out that baby vests have that funny envelope neckline so you can pull them down in a poo explosion! I spent years carefully trying to get poopy vests over my babies heads without touching their faces and hair!

God yes, this!

I had four dc's and didn't realise that til I read it years later on here ffs!!

PaddleBoardingMomma · 11/09/2022 18:32

That it’s gerrymandering… not a man called Jerry Mandarin.

BalloonSlayer · 11/09/2022 18:32

@squirrelfan I decided to research what you have said, and sure enough you are correct. Flowers

Then I thought I would google to see where I have heard the Aeneas thing . . . the only thing I found was a thread from 2011 !!! with me saying exactly the same thing and someone saying "no, it's Enos." Grin

Perhaps I can claim that as my embarrassing revelation instead!

OrangeFlowersAreLovely · 11/09/2022 18:32

Also... the (beautiful) name Niamh... Neeve? I'll never get it 🤯

Don't feel bad - I think they were originally designed to easily go over a baby's head, until some bright spark realised that you could take them off in the other direction to assist with an explosive poo!

Sorry, but that’s so bloody ridiculous that’s it’s actually marvellous 🤩. I’ll definitely smile and remember this when I hear it in future. 😁😁

When I first joined Mumsnet, I kept seeing posts ending in TIA. I though to myself, "This woman Tia creates a lot of threads."

It took me a long while to realise it was not someone called TIA.

BabyJellyShark · 11/09/2022 18:34

I've only just realised that Neil Diamond isn't singing about The Reverend Blue Jeans.

OrangeFlowersAreLovely · 11/09/2022 18:34

Another one. Unbreak My Heart. For 20 years I thought Toni Braxton just really liked Sage and Onion.

So are we now in the "Charlesian" era? 🤔

Apparently it's going to be known as the Carolean era as Charles is the male version of Caroline or something to do with Latin - or something! I think it should be the Charleston era!
