Things I'm embarrassed to have realised so late in life...

Those ID necklaces? I had absolutely never heard of the word "lanyard" until around 3 years ago. All my friend's children learnt this way before I did. If you had told me "Lanyard" was a European city - I'd have believed you.

That little press send arrow in the top right hand corner? It only occurred to me in my mid 30s that it is in fact a paper aeroplane. I just thought it was a dodgy triangle.

I was absolutely stunned to find out the woman who plays Amanda in Motherland is not Catherine Tate.

Any confessions to console me I'm not the only one failing at life?! 😃

My kids are now adults and I never knew this Shock

Nor me. It would have been so helpful to know that when they were babies...

saveforthat · 11/09/2022 18:12

Thing makes no sense at all. By the way, what is Flo Rida?

flapjackfairy · 11/09/2022 18:13

@mnahmnah
It really is THINK which makes no sense to.me at all tbh .
I think.most people have got it wrong just like us.

LoHD · 11/09/2022 18:13

What!! I wish I had been aware of this an hour ago!

Dou8hnuts · 11/09/2022 18:13

A stones throw away from my house

Loveduvetdays · 11/09/2022 18:13

When parking and it says no return for 2 hours, I used to think you couldn't go back to your car for 2 hours 😂 I only realised it meant you couldn't park again within 2 hours after I asked my husband what happens if it rains and I might need to come back for my umbrella 😂

It was today for me 🤫

Me too, I'd have sworn that it was where Fireman Sam is from 🤬.
I'm 58 🙈🙊🙉

That a xylophone isn’t pronounced ex-why-lo-phone. Genuinely thought it was a different instrument!

Also an area of Sheffield

A stones throw away from my house

ChessieFL · 11/09/2022 18:14

@mnahmnah have a look at the link at the top of the screenshot you posted.

“Another thing coming" dates later, which suggests that thing is an eggcorn of think. It probably originated in speech with the misapprehension of the "k" in think as being the "c" in coming, which leaves something that sounds suspiciously like "thing coming."

It may be one of those things where so many people have got it wrong it’s now considered OK, but that doesn’t make it correct!

It was only when the covid tests came out that I realised the tonsils were not the bit that dangles down!

You're fucking with me surely? Runs to Google..

I always thought 'pseudo' was pronounced like suede-O.
Not a word I used very often until for work related reasons I had to use the word a lot - in front of senior people - at presentations.
Even after corrected I still forget!

CandyflossKid · 11/09/2022 18:15

That ABBA are named after the initials of the 4 members of the group - I was genuinely amazed when I realised a few years ago.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/09/2022 18:15

Modern British cars the front number plate is white the rear one is yellow.

KiraKiraHikaru · 11/09/2022 18:17

I thought that when they said in Parliament eyes to the right and nose to the left. That the MPs had to turn their heads like point their eyes one to the left and tip your nose to the right.

Didn't realise there was separate gates to go through and it was indeed ayes as in yes to the right and Nos as in disagreemen to go through the other gate.

This one made me proper laugh!!! 😂

Thanks @Violashift

doingitalllagain · 11/09/2022 18:17

@ZooMount Well you've blown my mind. I've done all my covid tests wrong! 😂

Blossomandbee · 11/09/2022 18:17

Only recently realised that the song C u when u get there by Coolio, which I listened to a lot in the 90s, is the same tune as Pachelbels Canon in D that walked down the aisle to over a decade ago. I don't know how I never connected the two!
I also always thought it was Rodney singing the Only Fools and Horses song.

There's a short story by Sophie Hannah that has this misunderstanding as a starting point...

flapjackfairy · 11/09/2022 18:19

@IcakethereforeIam
What ! Mind blown. Never realised that until now !!

I am crying reading this, Viola, thank you so much for the laugh! Am imagining MPs contorting their faces en masse every time there’s a vote… 😂

Learnt today Watership Down is an actual place with bunnies!

I didn't know that New Zealand is made up of seperate islands, is that common knowledge?

Yep, 2 big ones (North & South), another smaller Stewart Island then lots of small small islands scattered around - Great Barrier, Waiheke, Chathams etc, etc.
But all good - just dont say we're joined up to or part of Australia haha 🤣🤣

NCFT0922 · 11/09/2022 18:20

@Hodgepodge211 you’ve just had me laughing for ages at that! I’m imagining someone with a full on cockney accent having a normal conversation and then suddenly going very German for the word “Albeit” mid sentence 😂
