Things I'm embarrassed to have realised so late in life...

Those ID necklaces? I had absolutely never heard of the word "lanyard" until around 3 years ago. All my friend's children learnt this way before I did. If you had told me "Lanyard" was a European city - I'd have believed you.

That little press send arrow in the top right hand corner? It only occurred to me in my mid 30s that it is in fact a paper aeroplane. I just thought it was a dodgy triangle.

I was absolutely stunned to find out the woman who plays Amanda in Motherland is not Catherine Tate.

Any confessions to console me I'm not the only one failing at life?! 😃

I'd had 4 kids before I found out that baby vests have that funny envelope neckline so you can pull them down in a poo explosion! I spent years carefully trying to get poopy vests over my babies heads without touching their faces and hair!

Me too 😬

I was 24 before I realised "albeit" was said "all be it". I had been saying "al-bite" (like it was pronounced like a German word Blush

For the longest time I already read 'albeit' as 'al-bay', as if it was French. And I heard people say 'all be it' and just thought it was a colloquial thing and never thought about the fact I hadn't seen it written down.

I also always mentally pronounced ethereal as 'eth-uh-reel'.

The most embarrassing part? I'm an editor by trade.

My partner and I were just talking this afternoon about both having been embarrassingly old when we discovered what the 'Q' in Ps and Q's meant.

flapjackfairy · 11/09/2022 18:04

apparently it is another THINK coming as in " if you think that is happening you have another think coming. "
I saw that on another similar thread. I have always thought it was another THING coming which makes sense to me !

Neither I nor my DP knew narwhals were real until we had children and they were in lots of kids books.

After much questioning of why they put fictional animals in kids books, a quick Google made us feel quite stupid 😂

I didn't realise wolverines were real until a few years ago and still googled to double check before posting this

Ok

Mine is soooo dumb (but nicely topical) Blush

I only recently (3 days ago during the news coverage of the royal family) realised that the era referred to as Georgian was so-called because of, you know King George, and hence Elizabethan etc etc Blush

Not sure where I thought the names came from, obviously never given it a great deal of thought, and no I didn't take history at school Blush

This has blown my mind a bit! It makes so much sense but I've never realised this!

Violashift · 11/09/2022 18:05

I thought that when they said in Parliament eyes to the right and nose to the left. That the MPs had to turn their heads like point their eyes one to the left and tip your nose to the right.

Didn't realise there was separate gates to go through and it was indeed ayes as in yes to the right and Nos as in disagreemen to go through the other gate.

ZooMount · 11/09/2022 18:06

It was only when the covid tests came out that I realised the tonsils were not the bit that dangles down!

mnahmnah · 11/09/2022 18:07

@flapjackfairy

It is ‘another THING’ coming. You were right originally.

WalkingOnMarshmallow · 11/09/2022 18:07

What are they? I've never heard of them! 🙃

Letsdancedavidbowie · 11/09/2022 18:07

I didn't know that New Zealand is made up of seperate islands, is that common knowledge?

Yes me too! Whenever they say it on tv, my husband makes fun of me by looking to the left and pushing his nose to the right! It was 30 years ago and he still takes the piss 😂

That Hillsborough is in Ireland.. 😳

It’s also in Sheffield

ChessieFL · 11/09/2022 18:08

@mnahmnah No, it is another think coming. You and flapjackfairy are/were both wrong.

Choconut · 11/09/2022 18:09

I was convinced that avocado was spelt and pronounced advocado till I was gone 40 - even though it looks really wrong if you actually write it that way.

Nope. It's think. Me circa 1966- I think I'll have another bar of chocolate. Mum- Well you've got another think coming.

It's think. As in, if you think that's right, then you need another think.

It was ‘another think coming’ first. ‘Thing’ was an Americanism that came later on.

mnahmnah · 11/09/2022 18:10

@ChessieFL @saveforthat

Well the Merriam Webster dictionary seems to disagree? Maybe both are right?

Yumyumgin · 11/09/2022 18:11

Not me, my sister, bless her, she tries!

When talking about extending my drive to make it wider a friend said about applying for permission to lower the curb. She was genuinely shocked that the curbs didn't shrink over time from cars driving over them!

She's full of these little wonders, she's going to make me a fortune one day when I sell the book of stupid stuff She says 😅😅

I had no idea until recently that in "hyperbole" the e is pronounced. I thought it was more like "hy-per-bowl".

Who's Carol 🙈

That's what I was thinking 😂

mnahmnah · 11/09/2022 18:07

@flapjackfairy

It is ‘another THING’ coming. You were right originally.

It isn’t @mnahmnah it’s think.

the full phrase is: “if you think that you have another think coming”

I.e. you’ll need to think again.

if you think that, you have another thing coming, makes zero sense.

Choconut · 11/09/2022 18:12

ChessieFL · 11/09/2022 18:08

@mnahmnah No, it is another think coming. You and flapjackfairy are/were both wrong.

I had a quick look and read that it originally was 'another think' but seems to have evolved into 'another thing' and be widely accepted as that now.

Probably outing but I was only informed last year that a hare is a real animal and not an ancient mythical imagining of a rabbit.

Same with me but reindeer.
