So, now the funeral will be a public holiday, what will you be doing?

We are in the very fortunate position that a public holiday will not impact us too greatly. Dh has a major project with a deadline on the same day but he is on track. I have a deadline that has also been pushed back but which I was in front for. The DCs are off school (I assume).

I was worried about a medical appointment but my consultant e-mailed this morning (! On a Sunday!) to say that due to a cancellation I can come in the proceeding Thursday for which I am hugely grateful.

I was thinking I might make a nice picnic and go to the Downs near us. We can look over the sea and I will make a proper homemade picnic and the radio to listen to the funeral and take a flask of Pimms and a bottle of champagne and we will toast HM.

I'll be sulking that my child's year 6 residential will be at best delayed, at worst cancelled. Having paid £££ for it and the last few years they've had it's galling. I'll definitely not be watching the funeral. Might be working, haven't heard yet. If not, I'll make early dinner for some friends and resist the attempt at enforced sadness

Jesus that is tedious.

Dp will likely be working as usual. His job carries on through bank holidays even though it shouldn't - time of place that could easily shut down the day and not effect much.

I'll be home with dc who both won't be the least bit interested in watching the funeral but I'm hoping I'll be able to watch it.

I had a food shop booked for Monday but changed it Sunday, I know Tesco will be running deliveries as usual but felt right to change it.

i am however thinking of taking the kids out for early breakfast to fill them up for a few hours so I can watch the funeral in peace!

Hbh17 · 11/09/2022 18:14

I shall be watching every single minute of the funeral on TV. And probably crying. Again.

Dyra · 11/09/2022 18:15

I'll be watching the funeral. Probably cook a nice lunch. Nothing special.

But mildly seething inside because it's one of two days DD goes to nursery, so still have to pay. I'm also supposed to have a birth reflections meeting that day that I've been waiting 3 months for. No doubt I will get a phone call Monday to cancel and reschedule.

WimbyAce · 11/09/2022 18:16

NHS so waiting to hear if we are off but admin so I'm guessing so. Presuming OH work will be closed also. Will have the kids so not sure yet, depends on weather.

FourChimneys · 11/09/2022 18:19

Hill climb with DH, picnic lunch, try out my shiny new paddle board at the lake. Home for a shower and then see a few clients who have told me they don't want to cancel.

If it's raining hard, some DIY while being deeply grateful not to own a TV or licence.

Workyticket · 11/09/2022 18:23

Just booked to go out for Sunday lunch next week. I usually lesson prep on Sundays, I'll do that on the Monday now

We'll watch the funeral service though

KentuckyDerbyandJoan · 11/09/2022 18:23

Watching the funeral.

NoMoreChubRub · 11/09/2022 18:24

Unsure yet.
Dh may work, hes self employed and if most places in his field close or dont operate he'll be able to get a lot of work in.
If he doesn't then we'll probably take the dcs out somewhere

CrabbitBastard · 11/09/2022 18:29

the queen was patron to my employer so I suspect we will get the bank holiday. I'd rather NOT get it off as I have an important project to be working on.

Flatpackvictory · 11/09/2022 18:30

I thought it was an odd optional public holiday so I expected lots of employers not to give leave? Perhaps I misunderstood.

I think I'm working (court) but will find out this week.

It is a historical moment and I’m not a royalist but I’m so proud to have had such a strong female on power for so long. Someone posted this upthread, I feel the same.

BroomHandledMouser · 11/09/2022 18:30

I’ll be watching the funeral whilst simultaneously having a birthday 😬

saffy56 · 11/09/2022 18:33

My DD works in retail and they are open next Monday but they have loads of spare staff as the all the under 18's are off school/college. DD is a bit cross because they have put all the youngsters down to work so the older people can have a day off. She would have quite liked to have watched the funeral.

I honestly thought most shops would be closed especially in the morning but apparently not.

SushiGo · 11/09/2022 18:33

Going out is a lovely idea. I will/have been working non-stop in the run up so appreciate the opportunity for a break.

LadyCatStark · 11/09/2022 18:35

We’ll watch the funeral.

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/09/2022 18:36

Monday was a public holiday for some of us in Scotland anyway, so I was and will be off work anyway..

MinnieMountain · 11/09/2022 18:39

I don’t work on Mondays. I’d like to take DS for a bike ride but he wants to watch the funeral, so we’ll see how the timing works.
DH is a contractor, so will work.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 11/09/2022 18:40

I’m self employed, and whilst I will have to do some work that day, I will certainly be watching the funeral with the family.

Towerbells · 11/09/2022 18:41

Ringing the bells at our parish church and then dashing home to watch it on the tv I think.

MrsRhodes · 11/09/2022 17:38

@OrangePumpkinLobelia your day/plans sounds lovely.

Thank you. :)

I don't feel pride, probably as I don't like the institution, but I do dislike the idea of it being a man that people are bowing and curtseying to now. It was better when it was an old woman.

midsomermurderess · 11/09/2022 18:57

I’ll be back from holiday Very late on Friday. I’ll appreciate a long weekend, just to get back, get my head back into, daily life. I’m sure I’ll watch the service, it’s an historical event as much as anything else.

pastypirate · 11/09/2022 19:05

We are in the middle of a house move so plenty to use the time for. I have told the dds we will take a nice walk though and reflect on all we should be happy about.

Whendovescry03 · 11/09/2022 19:24

I was thinking of taking DS out for the day but it sounds like everything will be closed. I'm praying the weather is good so we can at least head to the beach or go for a picnic. Otherwise it's going to be a very boring bank holiday!

WarmChocolateFudgeCake · 11/09/2022 19:27

It's my birthday weekend so I'll be celebrating my birthday and taking advantage of the bank holiday weekend. Monday we'll probably have a drive somewhere scenic and a walk. We have 3 small children so might as well make the most of the day off together.
