Is lying in state a closed coffin?

I’m from a country where all our funerals are open coffin so we follow that culture here too and bring the body home for family and friends to visit. I’m assuming it’s a closed coffin due to the number of days for the Queen?

Was Diana buried in a vault/chamber kind of thing or does she have a traditional outdoor/underground grave?

She's buried on an island on a lake at Althrop house I think.

I also thought it was quite common practise in England a couple of generations ago. The deceased relative would be kept in the sitting room so other relatives could visit. Can't imagine what it would've been like putting young children to bed upstairs with granny lying dead in the front room...

I’m not convinced that the Queens body would be in the coffin. Likewise, I don’t believe Diana’s body was in the casket driven for miles after her funeral. I think a lot of the ceremonial things about royal funerals is just that, ceremonial for the public. This is just my opinion though

Thats an interesting thought. But can you explain where you think they are/were at the time.

^^ This has been bothering me since I read it. "Diana wasn't in the coffin" - so a lot of us mourned & cried at a pantomime on TV, did the royals know she wasn't in the coffin? Where the heck was she? I'm also guessing she's buried somewhere unknown - which I could understand - but then is the Althorp Estate & her brother & sisters part of the same pantomime?

Similarly with the Queen (& Prince Philip), she'd better be in the coffin or who is paying the bills for a facade that's not even real 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ are you saying they're all dummy runs?

I too thought that!
Like the Cullinan 💎 Diamond, The Queen could be taken on a private plane to evade any attempts to disrupt her Casket.
But that’s just conjecture.

If any of what you suggest is true, do you have any evidence (just asking)? Imagine if the public found out about it there would be bloody uproar. Imagine how much it costs to merely 'fake' everything just for show, why bother at all?

Do you think the commentators on TV and the whole shabbang have been watching a fake run - imagine if they all knew. Why has the Queen had significant input into the design of her hearse if she never got to use it - just to pacify everyone? That's nice!

So the Queen stayed at Balmoral from Friday to Sunday and remained un-embalmed or was it not nesscasry? Would Balmoral have the resources to embalm the Queen there? Or would that have been done at Palace of Holyroodhouse or St Giles' Cathedral? Reading the replies it seems like it may have not been done at all if the coffin was sealed correctly.

In Australia I have seen many open caskets since 5yrs and most recently was my brother who due to an autopsy it had been sometime and yes, he looked very different but my parents being Irish & Scottish they wanted to see him the night before his funeral at the funeral home. Apart from him, they all just looked like they were sleeping peacefully, especially the older ones.

I don’t think for a send Diana is buried on the small lake island at Althorp.

How would they have been able to dig deep enough without hitting the water table? I bet she’s in the family vault but they didn’t want the small church besieged by tourists.

I’m very confident the Queen was embalmed. It is routine for Royal burials. The undertakers would have brought all the necessary equipment to Balmoral and done it there.
