Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

@EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy I couldn't agree more. The prime minister knows they are likely only in that job for a few years so they can mess things up and then leave it for the next person! The royal family have that job and duty for life (apart from the one that abdicated 😂).

Keep

Janesdufflecoat · 10/09/2022 00:11

And keep btw!

  1. the last referendum we held wasn't a roaring success!
  2. the alternative would be worse we would end up with Boris Johnson!
HappyPeach · 10/09/2022 00:21

Keep

CallMeLinda · 10/09/2022 00:23

It would completely depend on what they proposed to replace them with, and what that role would comprise.

I am against the concept of being born to rule, heredity power, and especially divine rights etc, so my heart is to abolish it, as long as any alternative system isn't unpalatable.

VivienneDelacroix · 10/09/2022 00:24

Not necessarily. Lots of countries have both a head of government and a separate head of state.

Watchthesunrise · 10/09/2022 00:25

Keep

Janesdufflecoat · 10/09/2022 00:27

Boris isn't the head of Govt anymore but do you not think that given half a chance he'd be there?

GuyMontag · 10/09/2022 00:27

Abolish.

The Queen did a good job.

But we really shouldn't be having a monarchy.

All land ultimately owned by a king, hereditary sovereignty, titles, power and favour? No. We should not have that.

LondonWolf · 10/09/2022 00:28

Keep.

wonderstuff · 10/09/2022 00:28

Abolish. It's a ridiculous system. Government should be focused on the energy crisis, instead they are forced to ignore 60 million people and focus on Charles for goodness knows how long because he was born to be special.

ganvough · 10/09/2022 00:28

Keep. Monarchies are more than just a bit of pomp. I think they can help maintain democracy against communism and authoritarian govts. Everyone talks of how fantastic quality of life is in places like Sweden and they have a monarchy too. Anyway most countries have torrid histories of conquests and barbaric practises including those in Africa, Asia etc. We aren't abolishing every place in the world....

Never understand people who want to cancel them because they have a history of colonialism etc. Thats like cancelling the NHS because at one point doctors practised electro shock therapy and barbaric treatment of female conditions. They've done their bit to atone with the public service. And if people resent paying for them, they should also want to abolish the companies they work for that exploit them, or not use any app or service that makes it's founder rich and powerful with their money. Like MN, FB, Twitter and pretty much every capitalist convenience.

MinglingFlamingo · 10/09/2022 00:29

Keep

Aposterhasnoname · 10/09/2022 00:33

Keep. And I’d also vote keep again for the second referendum that would take place five year later cos the first one didn’t produce the answer wanted, cos reasons.

arthurfowlermood · 09/09/2022 23:23

Abolish to fuck.

Yep.
Sell all of those properties and put the money to good use.
They're a joke.

Chargingup · 10/09/2022 00:34

fuck the monarchy

Harriet0101 · 10/09/2022 00:36

@wonderstuff There's always going to be some crisis going on - that's the governments job to deal with it. However, the government has had all summer before the queen died to focus on the energy crisis but they decided to focus on rishi Vs liz and went on holiday instead!
I'm quite enjoying the news today, and I enjoyed Charles' speech. It makes a change from talking about electricity prices and cost of living!

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 10/09/2022 00:36

Electric shock therapy is still a thing.

<sorry, back to the thread at hand!>

Blueberrywitch · 10/09/2022 00:38

Abolish and abolish all titles. The thing about them is that the only reason these particular people have held on to their titles is due to democracy and peace (sort of ironic!) - in the old days they would have had to fight to keep their power, game of thrones style. So I don’t think it’s fair that this particular family gets to stay in line for the throne forever - by now the Lannister’s or at the very least a bastard son would have killed them and stolen the crown. It’s like the whole of history was a game of musical chairs and they sat down and haven’t had to get back up.

ABOLISH THE NHS. Lol.

Holding any institution responsible for the past when they've evolved and work actively to use their power for good (I came to this country on a monarchy sponsored scholarship) is nuts.

I'd rather pay for them than the tech giants and high street retail magnates who do f all for their own employees let alone the rest of the world.

Yes, but the election and summer recess were planned. Shutting down parliament again now seems crazy. I'm pleased that at least the government statement went out. It just seems silly to focus the entire countries resources on this one family for 10 days. Really hammers home where the power lies and who the government really is there to serve.
