Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

Keep but make privatised and not public funded.

smooththecat · 09/09/2022 23:25

I’d like to believe that people don’t really think that some are born above others.

Keep the money, that's just the luck of birth, but hereditary titles and power is bonkers

they have very little power. No more so than any other super rich family.

titles don’t make much difference either these days. Unless you have the money to back it up you’re just the same as everyone else.

i would vote keep as they bring a lot of tourist ££££££ in. If we abolished they’d still have pretty much the same money and status, with no obligation to the country. Might as well keep them up and earning….

Keep. Could you imagine if the Prime Minister was the ultimate Head of State 😱

smooththecat · 09/09/2022 23:27

I don’t object to them existing as a posh family/anachronism as they are in other European countries. We shouldn’t have people born into power, it’s bonkers.

I don't think presidents necessarily fill the shortcomings of the Royal Family. Having an active Royal Family is a USP for British tourism, and events like Jubilees are good community events that would be hard to pull off en masse for other reasons.

The strongest argument against tends to be the lack of autonomy for members of the family (at a benefit of immense wealth and privilage). Fortunately the oldest children/ direct heirs seem to take the family culture of public duty seriously and it tends to be the younger siblings who become increasingly remote from the throne who are more likely to cause issues.

I suspect that King Charles (whoa, that's weird) will gently make tweaks to make the Royals stay more relevant to British society. He's had a long time to observe what works and is a bridge between the traditions upheld by his mother and his sons' generation.

Abolish, I think. Still, a bit of me likes the pomp and circumstance of a monarchy, but the older I get, the harder I find it to square it with the inequalities in our society.

keep. Apart from liking the traditions & ceremony myself

a) 'royal' tourism brings in a LOT of money

b) we'd need to have quite a few people to take over their 'work' & a lot if staff.

c) without the revenue the RF generates, we couldn't afford to pay the representatives of the country.

d) the shit show created when we elect Govt. Does that not teach people anything.

NancyDrooo · 09/09/2022 23:29

Keep but streamline (which I think is happening already anyway). Going more Scandi-royal would be perfect.

Who would pay them? Would you privatise MPs as well?

I predict that Australia (definitely), Canada & NZ will all have binned the monarchy within 5 years. If it’s a ridiculous anachronism in the U.K., goodness knows how it must seem to people in those countries.
