Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

Abolish

Janesdufflecoat · 09/09/2022 23:50

Please can we not do this now?
I realise that not everyone supports the Monarchy but just 24 hours after the death of a 96 year old woman who has dedicated her life to public service just isn't the time to hold a 'referendum' thread!

Just respect the fact that other people might be feeling quite sad about this!

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

So?

Most of us didn't know her personally, and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that it's a sad loss for her family but we can still discuss what a future without her as queen might look like.

If you feel sad about a 96 year old woman you didn't know dying then you must be sad all the time because older people die every day.

You don't have to read it. Its very clear what the thread is about.

Natch @Amortentia — religion gets a say in democracy the same way everything else does: through its adherents each having one vote.

Janesdufflecoat · 09/09/2022 23:53

I don't think it's the thread for anyone with a shred of decency in them FFS!

I made it clear in the title what it's about. People can choose not open it if the idea of a referendum is too upsetting.

Abolish.
if we want pomp and ceremony we can still do that, get someone to dress up as Britannia, wave a bit, read out a speech someone else has written anyway, that’ll do.

Do calm down. What was your relation to her out of interest?

RJnomore1 · 09/09/2022 23:59

Abolish. The Queen was a link to a past and we need now to look forward.

This would be better with a poll in AIBU.

Libertyqueen · 10/09/2022 00:00

Keep - any alternative is worse

Janesdufflecoat · 10/09/2022 00:01

I'm not hysterical just disappointed! But yeah go on pile on!
We could have this discussion absolutely anytime but less than 48 hours after a 96 year old woman who dedicated her life to public service has died, really?

I'll leave you all to it!

I'm on the app, you can't do/see polls on here annoyingly.

Because we might (but for accident of birth order) at this very moment be the subjects of King Andrew. The potential of a lifetime of that would be far far worse than any number of elected presidents, and who is to say we even need one of those at all. The monarch has no power, why would we need to replace it?

purplecheesecat · 10/09/2022 00:02

Definitely abolish.

Harriet0101 · 10/09/2022 00:03

Absolutely keep. They are a joy to watch on TV, and I love the history and tradition of it all. During hard times like in covid they set much better examples and followed the rules more than our government did!

I can't see any better alternative, just because you elect a president/prime minister does not mean they are any good. I mean look at Boris Johnson, Donald trump etc. I don't trust people to vote wisely!

m00rfarm · 10/09/2022 00:04

keep

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 10/09/2022 00:05

Keep. The Royal Family all seem to have a sense of duty and treat their role with the gravitas such a job requires.

You just have to look at the absolute shower of shit we’ve been saddled with as prime ministers in recent years, politicians who are all in it for personal gain, not because of what they can do for the country to see that having a RF who take it seriously is surely a better shout than an elected President who will almost certainly be out for what they can get.
