Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

All day long. Imagine President Truss/johnson/ Blair?
Urgh. Fuck that

Better than a family that shielded a pedophile surely?

Not to mention the really horrible history the monarchy shouldn't be proud of.

How can anyone say keep - this family got to where they are by exploiting not just individual people but whole countries. The UK is seeing millions struggle while these people live silly extravagant lives because long time ago some idiots decided that would make sense.

Abolish the monarchy and the Church of England, take the land, property and money into public ownership.

Beefilm · 09/09/2022 23:38

Keep but do away with the bowing and scraping. I used to think only the Queen could do it but I now Charles will acquit himself well enough and William will be excellent. A Trump or a Biden would be embarrassing .

PerkingFaintly · 09/09/2022 23:38

Depends entirely what you're proposing to replace our current structure with.

A stupid referendum against the existing set-up, rather than for a replacement, is how we ended up with the shambles that Brexit became – where even Nigel Farage found himself saying he'd rather stay in the EU than Leave with the deal that looked most likely at one point.

I mean, this sort of chaos is great if you're Putin or some disaster opportunist. Not so great for the rest of us.

Put up the alternative first. Then we can vote on it.

Abolish.

To the people saying, But President Blair/Trump/Johnson etc - remember a monarch is for life; a president is just for a few years.

I look at USA and it's presidents also other nations presidents and shudder. So I'm in the keep camp

For me I think I'd have to see real benefits from changing something to vote for it and I can't see any major benefits of being a republic, plus there are some obvious pitfalls

But why have a series of idiots for a few years each when you can have a fantastic Queen Elizabeth for many years? It doesn't make sense.

It’s like we’ve learned nothing.

Before you can have a proper referendum on abolishing the monarchy you’d have to properly define what you are proposing to replace it with.
A directly elected President in addition to the PM? An elected President and also moving to a presidential system without a PM?
How would the elections work? What sort of voting system would you use? How long would Presidents serve for? How much power would they have?

You can’t just abolish the monarchy without a wholesale reworking of the constitution. It’s way more complicated than just deciding we don’t have a King anymore. I’d have to know what they were planning to put in its place before I voted for abolition.

A lot of the highest rated countries in the democracy index are constitutional monarchies. Canada, NZ, Denmark, the Netherlands etc. A badly thought out.republic won’t make the country more democratic.
I’d be in favour of abolition if a new constitution was fully thought through. However, if there was a simple yes/no referendum tomorrow I would vote to keep the monarchy.

Yes, and we should kick out the 26 Bishops that currently sit in the House of Lords too.
