Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

They are my favourite soap opera!! The scandal and the gossip that has lasted hundreds of years. From arrows in eyes, to beheading wives and affairs 😂

Netflix costs me £6 a month, the royal family cost me 5p a year!! I get my money's worth!

We are now on like season 61 of 1200 years. Don't cancel it now, it just got interesting with the USA overseas team!!

Haha I feel like this season's finale will be coronation 😂 gotta have a big season finale with some cliff hangers, such as will the Duke and duchess of Sussex be there, what role will they play will they return to the UK in next season. Dun dun dun (EastEnder bongs)

And then we move on to the next series with, how does Charles create a "modern monarchy" George and Charlotte become more regular cast members 😂

I've completely over thought this!!

If a rubbish president is elected, you can get rid of them a few years later. A rubbish royal is there for life.

No idea where the 5p comes from but they apparently get £80m annual government allowance which comes from our taxes, that's already ~£1.3 per person in this country. I expect there is more for special events and security.

And they don't pay taxes.

I would vote to keep.

Unless for some unexpected reason I had moved to one of the countries outside the UK that has King Charles III as head of state.

They do pay taxes - income tax on their private income as well as VAT, fuel duty and all the other taxes we all pay.

The Sovereign Grant is particularly high for the next few years as it includes the cost of refurbishment of Buckingham Palace - which certainly needs it, apparently the electrical sockets still have round holes!

My vote’s to keep - better the devil you know.

100% keep! Looking around the world I genuinely think we have the best system of governance.
France has had 5 republics since it chopped off its monarchies heads!
I think having an apolitical head of state that everyone can unite behind with no real power helps guard against a dictator or authoritarian ruler ever emerging. It’s a good check and balance in an otherwise democratic system.

Perfect28 · 22/09/2022 16:02

The footage from recent events wouldn't look out of place in north Korea.

In theory, I believe that it's wrong to have the role of head of state reserved for members of one family and that members of said family are 'above' us just because they got born or married.

On the other hand, however, I love all the pomp, ceremony and history that goes with the royals so if push came to shove I'd say 'keep'. But a 'slimmed down monarchy', with public funding and titles limited to those directly in line, and more crown estates returned to the nation to be used as museums or something else of public benefit.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 22/09/2022 17:17

Why do people persist on giving the notion of an "apolitical head of state that everyone can unite behind" as a pro of a monarchy? When it's clear that a significant chunk of the population are fundamentally politically opposed to the concept of monarchy itself? The existence of a monarchy is intrinsically political just as the existence of any other component of a system for governing and representing a country is political; support for the monarchy is a political stance. Apolitical my arse. No, your beloved King is not a neutral figurehead we can all join together to cheer for, not to those of us who object to his very existence (as a King, not his existence as a human being — that's fine, obviously).

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 22/09/2022 17:19

Persist in 😑

100% keep.
