Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

On the Rest is Politics podcast this morning there was an interesting point about the monarchy as a support to democracy and a vanguard against populist/fascist leaders in govt. Was an interesting point, worth listening to.

It's the people who protect against fascism not the bloody monarchy

The point wasn't that the monarchy prevent it themselves, have a listen to the podcast

MagicFox · 15/09/2022 07:38

Itself, even

HRTQueen · 15/09/2022 08:12

I wouldn’t vote but this past week has made me realise it's here to stay

Germany lost pretty much all it gained from looting etc after WW2, it's leaders one way or another died, the RF have kept pretty much all they gained over the last few 100 years.

William et al has and still does directly profit from the looting and slavery his ancestors did.

There is no comparison to Germany and WW2.

At present, ‘the people’ seem quite tolerant of limitations on free speech, cancel culture etc so I can’t say I’m reassured by that assertion.

Novella4 · 15/09/2022 12:43

@SomethingOnce
I meant it's the individual values of members of society that prevent fascism - like the people questioning the arrest of protestors in London . But yes I agree there aren't many about !

I haven't listened to the podcast the poster linked - I will try to
I don't see the royal s preventing anything . They ran for their palaces during covid while ordinary people were heroes

Unelected head of state is not a good look gif somewhere that claims to be a democracy.

It's not undemocratic to have an unelected Head Of State. We are a representative democracy where Parliament is Supreme as settled from Glorious Revolution of 1688 to the modern day Supreme Court ruling.

Since you keep using the Republic of Ireland as some kind of example, they're only 0.006 points ahead of the UK in the Democracy Index. Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands and Spain are all well above the Republic of Ireland......they're all Constitutional Monarchies.

So, a Constitutional Monarchy isn't undemocratic.

Of the world's 125 democracies:

65 directly elect a Head Of State
30 are Constitutional Monarchies
30 indirectly elect a Head Of State

So, not electing a Head Of State is not exactly undemocratic. King Harald is Norway's Head Of State and they're second in the Democracy Index.

Why would anyone want to give politicians more power?

Rubbish argument, if ever I heard one.

Florenz · 15/09/2022 23:03

I just don't see how abolishing the monarchy would make things any better.

HRTQueen · 15/09/2022 23:19

The thought of President Johnson would be enough to make me vote to support keeping the monarchy

the damage would have been worse than he created (I wouldn’t be keen on President Corbyn either)

Florenz · 15/09/2022 23:24

I wouldn't trust the motives of anyone who actively wanted to be the Head of State.

I don't see the point as they can't actually get involved in politics anyway

workiskillingme · 15/09/2022 23:37

I think all a monarchy teaches our young is that not every human life is as important as another
Not all little babies born will have a life as good as those born into royalty. That boy there will be head of state and heir to all the wealth he could every imagine but little Johnny in tower hamlets will live hand to mouth all his life if he even survives to adult hood

Isausernameavailable · 15/09/2022 23:47

Put it in ain for a vote. Abolish here

PickAChew · 09/09/2022 23:17

Might as well keep. Look at the fuckwits who get voted in as president where that's an option.

Basically this!

Stompythedinosaur · 16/09/2022 00:47

It isn't a topic I feel strongly about.

I suppose if vote to abolish, because ultimately I don't believe in having an aristocracy as I believe all people are equally important.

But this is pretty low on my list of pressing issues to campaign about.

Patienceisntvirtuous · 16/09/2022 01:28

Keep.

There will always be some sort of head of state and I think the Royal Family are fundamentally good people and like to be thought of as such, largely.

I cannot say the same for presidents and politicians.

Plus I am a bit of a history geek and I like the culture.
