Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

Has anyone kept a tally?
Maybe if there’s a desire for a referendum on abolishing the monarchy, Labour could put it in their manifesto for the next election.

When it comes to senseless referendums, i suspect it will be in the Tory manifesto first.

Would also mean the next Tory PM who breaks the law, wont have to apologise to King Charles.

Abolish as someone who is Black I couldn't and will never support the monarchy.

like many wealthy white families the wealth has come from slavery and colonialism the Royal family refuse to acknowledge this. The 'royal jewels' have been looted from colonial countries. The queen in her reign oversaw colonial violence in Kenya and other places.

In addition, it's not true to say the monarch as no power they definitely have soft power, the monarch has weekly meetings with the prime minister and they can definitely advise and say don't do that. Look at how the country is looking, in addition, all bills and Lord have to have a royal assent some questionable bills have recently been passed, all which the Queen has consented to.

☝️ all of the above and more

This isn’t even close to being accurate. But it’s easy to point the finger at privileged rich white folk and rage, it’s very on trend. The actual facts don’t seem too relevant as long as there’s the chance to give someone an undeserved kicking.

Keep. We tried getting shot of them before, but asked them back. It works constitutionally, and the monarch can be consulted, warns and encourages. There is no power to change anything a government has decided to do.

SomethingOnce · 14/09/2022 02:31

I’m beginning to think the RF are the only members of the elite who have any interest at all in the long-term prospects of the country. Which is quite a depressing state of affairs.

BobbysGirly · 14/09/2022 02:36

Keep

Nat6999 · 14/09/2022 03:37

Abolish, I think the Queen should have been the last monarch. After seeing that there will be no inheritance tax payable so that the Royal purse isn't reduced I definitely thing the monarchy should be abolished & they should cough up.

You mean in the 17th Century?

Technically, the Irish President has exactly the same powers in respect of the Irish Parliament. But he was elected.

Can't we have that instead of trusting to luck that we don't get another Edward VIII

Bellinsurge We might equally get someone horrendous like Blair as president who would not remain above politics. At least with a monarchy the role is clearly understood, and the boundaries are set.

And the boundaries have been broken by the RF before. At least if a president did that we could vote them out.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 14/09/2022 09:03

Fucking hell the pro-monarchy crew keep making the same old tired arguments that have already been debunked a hundred times on this thread already. Does no-one actually read anyone else's posts?

Yet many countries manage very well even better than the UK & if the Queen did in fact warn encourage & advise, she wasn't above politics at all, it seems to be all very secretive.

The RF has worked, if you believe that, because we've had a decent Monarch, not always guaranteed.

At least with an elected head of state, we'd know what we were getting & if it was Blair, he would have been democratically elected, seems odd that people would object to that?

And for those saying that presidents are rubbish because of trump etc. Ireland have a very successful presidential model and have had remarkable holders of the post. If we get a dud, we vote them out after 4 years.

Imagine if Charles hadn't been born - now we would have King Andrew. You can't just pass over a bad one - to do so would make the whole basis of monarchy invalid.

Keep. I quite like the extra bank holidays. The pomp and ceremony can be quite fun too.

^ this.

Keep. But I think that they should be stripped right back to only the few in line for the throne.

It's the best of a bad bunch of options isn't it

This is only said by people who haven't even bothered to consider the options.

What do you do if for the next 25 years your only choices for president are effectively Trump, Boris or Putin and there aren't any more viable candidates?
