Which way would you vote in a referendum on the monarchy?

Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

Keep. You'd never create it now, but I don't want a Presidency and it seems to work.

Howthehelldoiknow · 13/09/2022 14:01

Bloody well abolish! The expence for the funeral and all the build up to it..and next the coronation for Charles..

ItsRainingPens · 13/09/2022 14:01

Abolish, because it's a thing of the past, not because I feel any animosity towards them

I would want a third option:

Ask the current Royal Family if they want to be released from the duty of having to be a Royal Family.

I would vote for that - if they want to end it, fine. If not, we keep them. We can always change our decision in future.

Does anyone know if the Monarch can abolish the monarchy? Or does it have to be the State?

And YY to having a high turnout threshold for a referendum - all referenda in fact.

Abolish as someone who is Black I couldn't and will never support the monarchy.

like many wealthy white families the wealth has come from slavery and colonialism the Royal family refuse to acknowledge this. The 'royal jewels' have been looted from colonial countries. The queen in her reign oversaw colonial violence in Kenya and other places.

In addition, it's not true to say the monarch as no power they definitely have soft power, the monarch has weekly meetings with the prime minister and they can definitely advise and say don't do that. Look at how the country is looking, in addition, all bills and Lord have to have a royal assent some questionable bills have recently been passed, all which the Queen has consented to.

People need to get beyond this nonsense idea that if you do not have a monarch, then it follows that you absolutely must have an elected President. It's perfectly reasonable to combine the role of head of government with that of head of state, as the two are quite often in the same place at the same time in any case. There's no reason at all why a progressive, modern country needs a H.O.S. that is anything other than a notion rather than a full-time role held by a distinct individual.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 13/09/2022 14:45

Could be anything @XDownwiththissortofthingX

"All rise, please, for the President in Perpetuity of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Cecil, the 6-Foot Wooden Pineapple."

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 13/09/2022 14:50

The nice thing about Cecil is he knows to keep his opinions to himself, doesn't interfere in politics or make public statements, is morally impeccable, and is therefore not as divisive as a human president. Anyone can respect and get behind Cecil, no matter their politics.

Of course, being a pineapple rather than any kind of fruit that naturally grows in the UK, you could argue that he represents a history of colonialist privilege, but we politely ignore these things.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 13/09/2022 14:55

Pineapples are only ever offensive when they are sliced up and put on pizza, so they're automatically preferable to unelected monarchies full of sexual deviants and genetic inadequates.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 13/09/2022 14:56

I think slicing the president would be considered some kind of offence.

Horcruxe · 13/09/2022 14:58

I'd keep them, I'm not a Royalist but know whatever replaces them will be much worse and cost way more.

starlingdarling · 13/09/2022 14:59

Keep. I quite like the extra bank holidays. The pomp and ceremony can be quite fun too.

Has anyone kept a tally?
Maybe if there’s a desire for a referendum on abolishing the monarchy, Labour could put it in their manifesto for the next election.
