Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

@MrsSkylerWhite and we would have that with an elected non-executive President like in Ireland or Germany

Toddlerteaplease · 13/09/2022 06:29

We must not abolish something we've had since around 1066 and before.

Might as well keep. Look at the fuckwits who get voted in as president where that's an option.

This.

Keep.

There isn't a better alternative and actually A Republic would be worse in cost, disruption, unneeded diversion of government time, world messaging would suffer (diminish our reputation internationally), loss of global soft power, danger to stability of our constitution and leave us exposed to future dictatorships. Plus lack of continuity in public messaging and leadership.

You'd struggle to find someone as well versed in the role who has spent their life doing charity work and public engagements like Charles. He's well qualified. Leave it. We get will in 20 years all being well.

Again, look at Ireland. Their president has no power. The Irish President is not like the French or US President. There is more than one way to have a republic.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 13/09/2022 06:51

I could do a better job than Charles after a weekend's training. And I can pick up inkwells all by myself.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 06:54

Please Google Mary Robinson. Or Mary McAleese. Or Michael D Higgins. If only our head of state was like that

BlueThingie · 13/09/2022 06:57

Keep, faute de mieux

Florenz · 13/09/2022 06:59

Keep, I don't like or trust politicians.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/09/2022 06:59

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 07:03

We've had many terrible diseases since 1066 and before. Is that a reason not to get rid of them?

OnlyEverAutumn · 13/09/2022 07:07

@Toddlerteaplease what a weird argument! We used to have slavery and workhouse, and no sanitation and no vaccines and capital punishment! 🙄 Damn we should have kept them all 🙄.

Abolish and replace with Irish system.

Indoctro · 13/09/2022 07:12

Abolish

AclowncalledAlice · 13/09/2022 07:15

If you can put toothpaste on your own toothbrush you've got the job! 😁

Boxin · 13/09/2022 07:22

Abolish.

Change to Proportional Representation and have a proper democracy at last.

maddy68 · 13/09/2022 07:23

Keep. I would have said abolish a few weeks ago. But seeing the impact she's had on people across the world and the need for a constant in an ever changing political world has changed my mind.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 13/09/2022 07:34

How is it a constant when charles is liable to pop his clogs in five or six years?

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 07:43

If we can't, as a nation, cope with the change of both Pm and Head of State in a week, we are not as strong as we thought we were.
There are a lot of challenges going on in the world. And it seems we are too frightened to deal with them without hiding behind pageantry and palava.

Florenz · 13/09/2022 07:50

What problems would getting rid of the monarchy solve?

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 08:15

Unelected head of state is not a good look gif somewhere that claims to be a democracy.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 08:15

For not gif

Agreed

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 08:16

The King pays zero death duties on the death of his mother. You cool with that?
