Which way would you vote in a referendum on the monarchy?

Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

I've never met a tourist who came to the UK because we have a monarch.

Likewise. Also, given the Windsor mob apparently makes us the 'envy of the world', I've yet to meet even one of those elusive envious foreigners. Who are these people? Oddly enough (given China and Russia are frequently touted as the sole alternative republican models) I've never heard of the 'envy of hereditary monarchy' phenomenon among those living in despotic monarchic regimes like Saudi or Jordan.

Then you've lived a very unobservant life

Yoynle · 12/09/2022 23:53

Abolish.

Where would we be without all of our ancient pageantry and traditions. Just another country with nothing special.

Quirrelsotherface · 13/09/2022 05:52

Keep. Those who vote to Abolish are the equivalent of Brexiteers to me. You don't know what you've got till it's gone.

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 05:53

Keep, the alternative is worse

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 05:57

Most that say abolish probably want Corbyn as president

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 05:58

Abolish. We don't need to have an executive President like France or the US. We could have a President like Ireland, India or Germany.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 05:59

And @User642986540 , I wouldn't want Corbyn running an allotment association

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 06:01

Michael D Huggins in Ireland performs the same constitutional function as The Sovereign- signing bills into law. But he has little or no political influence same as the Sovereign . And Ireland elects him.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 06:02

Higgins not Huggins

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/09/2022 06:02

Abolish

How much do they make the economy and how much to they take from the economy.

As long as it's not to disproportionate in costing the UK taxpayers I'd keep them.

I quite like having a royal family but that was with our queen as the head, as she was such a fantastic and untainted example. If people with less purity ended up in the close royal circle, I would begrudge it more.

pigcon1 · 13/09/2022 06:07

If we were going to have anyone it should have been Anne…

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 06:08

We vote for our PM but it doesn't mean we get what we want

emmetgirl · 13/09/2022 06:09

ABOLISH

Vanillarose1 · 13/09/2022 06:11

Abolish

Cascais · 13/09/2022 06:13

Keep

HundredYearsOfSolitude · 13/09/2022 06:13

If a party did offer a referendum on the monarchy would it even be allowed to be discussed in the HoC? Given that all MPs have to swear an oath of loyalty to the Sovereign and his successors. I don't think the RF can be discussed there full stop. They have that nicely boxed off!

To all the supporters of the monarchy I'd suggest reading Norman Baker's excellent book 'And what do you do?' Before reading that I was fairly ambivalent about the monarchy. After it I was strongly in support of a Republic. Their wealth and greed is unparalleled.

On a side note, the enforced national mourning is like something from NK.

ABOLISH!

Frances658 · 13/09/2022 06:13

I would abolish, with a caveat, they can keep their titles, palaces and personal wealth, but they’d have no constitutional role, and there’s be no civil list. I mean, they’re not going to disappear, even if the King wasn’t the head of state and if they didn’t get anymore tax payers money. They can live in their palaces, similarly to other republics in Europe, but they’d have no obligation to have a role in public life. Some Royal families in Europe, such as Spain, still chose to patron charities etc, so I’d wager ours would too. I honestly don’t think it would make any difference to the average tourist if they no longer have a constitutional, or if we stop funding them. They’d still be there, there’s still be all the history, Kate and William would still be splashed all over the tabloids every couple of weeks, so I really don’t think our tourist industry would be harmed at all if we became a republic. And as for any safeguarding constitutional role that the King may play, well Boris and the Tories blew that out of the water didn’t they, when the so obviously lied to the Queen, and they got what they wanted anyway.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 06:14

@User642986540 against n, I remind you that a President similar to the role they have in Ireland is very different to Trump or Macron's role.
As for voting for the PM, we don't. We vote for the party they lead. Did you vote for this PM, by the way.
Our entire system needs an overhaul

Frances658 · 13/09/2022 06:14

*constitutional role

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 06:15

@Frances658 , exactly. The PM lied to the Sovereign to fiddle Parliament. What safeguard stopped that?

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2022 06:16

Would have voted to abolish had it not been for Johnson and his behaviour in office.
now very glad that we have an additional layer of protection against a potentially dictatorial PM.
