Which way would you vote in a referendum on the monarchy?

Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

There is no need for any president at all

LizzieSiddal · 13/09/2022 08:19

Keep

I’d far rather have a monarch representing the country than a president Johnson.

Unelected head of state is not a good look gif somewhere that claims to be a democracy.

Are the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway and Denmark not democracies?

@Florenz
Do their monarchies interfere with laws to suit themselves ?
Are their royals above the law ?
Do their royals continue to amass the same wealth as the uk royals ?

If yes , same objections apply

@Florenz

There is no law that you must have a head of state . It's a convention

I'd abstain or spoil my ballot.
I don't know enough about what replacing a monarchy with a republic would look like for our daily lives. Though I guess there'd be a campaign, and I'd have a chance to listen to both sides? Maybe I'd end up deciding then...

Disgraceful system in a modern world. Shocking how many people still want to bow and scrape to people who attained their position through an accident of birth. I don't wish the royal family any I'll will, but they are an anachronism.

NinHuguenAndTheHuguenNotes · 13/09/2022 08:29

Oops - ill will!

WanderingFruitWonderer · 13/09/2022 08:29

But I've decided referendums are not the best idea. They seem to cause so much division and hate

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 08:38

So we are stuck with this system because we are afraid of referenda.
I disagree with the result of the last one by the way. And yes it has lead to division in the country. But if we were a grown up country we would have done the referendum properly in accordance with a written constitution. Not the back of a fag packet "advisory" one we did for Brexit.

User642986540 · 13/09/2022 08:45

A lot of people probably wouldn't bother to turn out to vote anyway

crumpet · 13/09/2022 08:46

Keep. Never seen an alternative to this which would be an improvement. The continuity that this 1000 year institution brings to this country is an underrated soft benefit.

SpoonsAndLoons · 13/09/2022 08:47

Keep

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 13/09/2022 08:48

Well it depends on the question and the proposed alternative. This is why referendums are so problematic things aren't normally one off yes no questions. We should do them more like the Irish if we are going to do them.

I'd go for slim down and reform.

Abouttimemum · 13/09/2022 08:51

I’d keep.

Lindy2 · 13/09/2022 08:54

Keep.

I think those that would vote abolish shout the loudest although the quieter keep voters are very likely the majority.

It's another subject where a lot of people are made to feel uncomfortable expressing their true view so they stay quiet despite being in the majority.

At least if we have an elected head of state who's an idiot, we can get rid of him.
