Which way would you vote in a referendum on the monarchy?

Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

The whole UK constitution needs a rethink, IMO. Republican models as in French, Irish Finland and Germany, work perfectly well.

At the very least, we need a completely electorally accountable upper house - elections on a separate cycle to parliamentary ones - an elected Head of State, and preferably a PR electoral system (one better conceptualised than the mess offered to us in the last referendum).

Everything electorally accountable, transparent, and subject to due democratic process. No one above the law, no one exempt from inheritance taxes the rest of the nation is subject to, no special rules and dispensations, no one having 'secret' meetings with the elected PM, and absolutely no one privileged family being exempt from the FOI act.

And to those not wanting 'President Blair', we'd only get him if we voted for him. I didn't want Brexit, but in a democracy you abide by the majority vote. And the key point is that he could be removed by precisely the same means as he was installed in-role in the first place.

Emphatic 'Abolish'.

I would keep but much slimmed down to what we have at the moment.

Imagine if we had a president and it was someone like Trump!😱

MsJuniper · 11/09/2022 17:07

Abolish and this is exactly the right time to have the conversation.

Irish system for me - a presidential figurehead with government staying broadly the same. Elected upper house, abolish all titles and update honours system.

I'd rather have a Windsor than a President Trump, Sturgeon or Johstone.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 11/09/2022 17:12

I've never met a tourist who came to the UK because we have a monarch.

Likewise. Also, given the Windsor mob apparently makes us the 'envy of the world', I've yet to meet even one of those elusive envious foreigners. Who are these people? Oddly enough (given China and Russia are frequently touted as the sole alternative republican models) I've never heard of the 'envy of hereditary monarchy' phenomenon among those living in despotic monarchic regimes like Saudi or Jordan.

itsnotdeep · 11/09/2022 17:13

Abolish. 100%. all of them.

I don't buy the argument that the alternative has to be a president like Trump.

RoachTheHorse · 11/09/2022 17:16

Abolish.

I actually like that we have the history and the pageantry. But the world has changed. A human person being judged as ‘better’ than me by the fate of the birth is just wrong.

Novella4 · 11/09/2022 17:18

I know.
I haven't seen many strong arguments for monarchy , unsurprisingly.

No wonder they are running scared from a vote on the matter .

It’s like we’ve learned nothing.

Before you can have a proper referendum on abolishing the monarchy you’d have to properly define what you are proposing to replace it with.
A directly elected President in addition to the PM? An elected President and also moving to a presidential system without a PM?
How would the elections work? What sort of voting system would you use? How long would Presidents serve for? How much power would they have?

You can’t just abolish the monarchy without a wholesale reworking of the constitution. It’s way more complicated than just deciding we don’t have a King anymore. I’d have to know what they were planning to put in its place before I voted for abolition.

A lot of the highest rated countries in the democracy index are constitutional monarchies. Canada, NZ, Denmark, the Netherlands etc. A badly thought out.republic won’t make the country more democratic.
I’d be in favour of abolition if a new constitution was fully thought through. However, if there was a simple yes/no referendum tomorrow I would vote to keep the monarchy.

This^

If it were to happen lets have a real plan.

Information on what we are voting for and actual protections in place, including being able to reject the final response if external influences are detected.

Also who exactly will be allowed to vote on this?
Would it just be The United Kingdom or would have to be the entirety of the commonwealth?

Novella4 · 11/09/2022 17:21

I don't think there will be much left regarding realms , I wouldn't worry about it

Abolish.

She was not my Queen, and he is not my King. What I think is disgusting is that the Prince and Princess of Wales are English (as they have been for centuries of course).

I do not wish that a penny of my taxes goes to subsidise the lifestyle of an undeserving over privileged family.

Keep, I love that we have a history that spans more than the term of a president. Even if you don't like Charles (I think William should have become King) they provide a unity that you don't get with a voted head of state. Not to mention the royal family is largely self sufficient compared to the USA cost of a president.

I like the fact they continue to project an example of respect, dignity and responsibility. The general public could learn a lot from living a life based on the values they uphold.

Fimofriend · 11/09/2022 17:44

Abolish and no president either. There is absolutely no need for any of them.

I'm not lowering myself to the royals' moral standards, thanks.

ParsleySageRosemary · 11/09/2022 19:44

I would actually keep, but much slimmed down, in accordance with European models. We are seeing enough issues with “elected” “representatives” at the moment to make me value anything left that have any idea of public service in return for what they are given, and the possibility for some long term stability is valuable too.

The amount of money and estates they have and regularly gain needs to be looked into - but that’s part of the economic reforms badly needed in Britain anyway. I’ve just been reading about a tripling of the RF’s finances over the same time period as severe restrictions in public spending, resulting in public services collapsing now. While they pay nothing in inheritance tax too.

EndTheMonacyNow · 11/09/2022 20:58

@Grumpybutfunny

The Queen was someone you could respect but I can't believe that you think the rest of the family are worthy of our admiration.
Edward Vlll - went to Adolf Hitler holiday home and did the nazi salute. That was in 1937 ffs
Prince Andrew - needs no explanation
Prince Harry - marijauna, wore nazi Swastika as a joke. Megxit nonsense.
King Charles - was an adulter and didn't seem to care how he treated Princess Diana

If they were decent people don't you think they would give away more of their vast wealth. Nobody needs that amount of money. They could still live lives of untold luxury but they still want to keep the money ( and continue to receive money from the state). King Charles is incredibly wealthy but will still receive the Sovereign Grant. Why? Would anyone with any moral decency do that.
Charities and community groups are encouraging people who can afford it to donate their £400 energy grant to help poorer households. You would think King Charles would take note.

There is also a lot of hypocrisy by some members of the Royal Family to do with climate change and the environment. It wouldn't be so bad if some of them didn't bang on about how everyone needs to do their bit whilst having ginormous frivolous carbon footprints. Fair enough that their roles require more travel than one of their plebs but the endless holidays and use of private planes etc is ridiculous.

I'm not sure what hunting apart from grouse/pheasant shooting they do now but quite a few royals including some of the younger one have gone on hunting holidays. Not that many years ago either. Remember that photo of Prince Harry and the water buffalo.

Did you know that the Queen lobbied the Scottish Government for exemption to climate law on her private land in Scotland. She was one of the biggest land owners in Scotland. Let's see what happens now that she has died. You would think if King Charles is now the owner of the land he would be keen to set a good example and not be specially exempted. SEE HERE for a better explanationn*.

There is more.

I am sure they would be nice enough if you met them but they are hypocrites to the core and they are ridiculously self serving. They need to retire.
