Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

@JessieDoolittle
You simply cannot state ' we wouldn't have Andrew '
By what mechanism would Andrew be removed if he were eldest ?

There is also a lot more going on that is covered up

This.

And Andrew has not had his titles or his place in the succession removed. He's been stripped of patronages and royal duties but he's still the Duke of York.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 10/09/2022 10:29

Keep

Mrsorganmorgan · 10/09/2022 12:33

Keep. Unless it's cheaper on tax payers to have a President!

I like the history and quite like Charles but definitely Abolish. How can we even promote equality, meritocracy or stop people voting in over posh leaders with no understanding of real life for the majority if we are as a nation psychologically programmed to be reigned' over by a posh family with no real right or talent other than being born into it.

I know people throw the tourism revenue out there but the castles etc would still remain and are historic buildings.

YouAreEntitledToMyOpinion · 10/09/2022 13:03

Keep.

Excellent comment!

Tourism is such a daft answer, isn't it? Asif France, America, Italy etc etc don't have any tourists.

I've never met a tourist who came to the UK because we have a monarch.

mrsjg · 10/09/2022 13:49

Abolish

Munchyseeds2 · 10/09/2022 13:59

Exactly. As if tourism should be a consideration at all when considering the structure of a countries political system, it’s ludicrous.

Also, Blair or Johnston would have made good presidents. Both interesting personalities but wouldn’t have had any power to do anything really. Rep. Of Ireland manage to produce some good presidents I’m sure we could to. We need to shake off the whole class system in this country.

DoingJustFine · 10/09/2022 14:38

Keep. I suspect the Queen might have had power to do a lot more good than she actually did. Hopefully Charles can make a positive difference.

AnnunciataZ · 10/09/2022 15:23

Good point @Amortentia. But people hear "President" and immediately associate it with the American system.

peridito · 10/09/2022 15:27

Abolish

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 10/09/2022 15:48

Abolish - for anyone that hasn’t read it, this is excellent Republic - what do you do

ChagSameachDoreen · 10/09/2022 15:57

Get rid.

ASafeHiddenPlace · 10/09/2022 16:03

Abolish

PollyPeePants · 10/09/2022 16:04

Abolish

Pedallleur · 10/09/2022 16:04

Abolish. I'm sure the Queen used her influence when it suited ie Queens Consent.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 10/09/2022 16:07

Abolish.

PollyPeePants · 10/09/2022 16:07

Abolish - he'd rid of all the aristocracy
and modernise the constitution at the same time
Elected second house
Proportional representation
Strongly consider federalism

WoolyMammoth55 · 10/09/2022 16:10

Abolish.

Have had to answer a lot of questions from my clever 5yo DS about why he can't be King one day because it's kind to take turns. Makes me feel more than ever how indefensible it is about all these billions rolling around our nation while child poverty is through the roof.

PollyPeePants · 10/09/2022 16:12

And these people say keep because what if we ended up with a president like Boris
How exactly would the way that worked out been any worse? What has a constitutional monarchy done thus far to be a check or balance or the prime minister and government? The queen was famously neutral in terms of politics and so didn't/ wouldn't intervene.

PollyPeePants · 10/09/2022 16:12

Sorry lots of typos, bloody annoying

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 10/09/2022 16:28

Keep, undoubtedly.
