Which way would you vote in a referendum on the monarchy?

Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

Keep

AbstractDream · 10/09/2022 08:26

@Novella4 yes and that's why personally, I'd like them abolished but when I see the role they play in society, then I'd say keep.
Wise and gentle is the persona they put out there.
Also personally, I hate all this 'serving' talk. They have all these privileges because they 'serve' us?

Society is weak though and I wouldn't want all the fawning, loyalty and worship directed towards a president.

I'd like abolish but looking at our society, I'd say keep.
I think having that tier of a good wise monarch above prime ministers probably keeps them in check and must be humbling and grounding for them.
Society is strange and many people seem to need a figurehead to look up to. It may as well be a wise monarch than a prime minister wielding temporary power.
Our monarchs have seen much history and come across as wise and gentle. They can be used for good.
The danger, as pp pointed out, is if the younger generations change.

Wise and gentle? That’s a sentiment too far. Come on now.

But fawning is only for monarchy .
I've never seen a politician in the UK fawned over !

Novella4 · 10/09/2022 08:29

I'm saying no more ( my god so much to say!) but @AbstractDream there is no need for a president to have power. No need for a president at all actually

I rather like the idea a poster gave below . Keep your king. But remove the money power land

MrsToadflax · 10/09/2022 08:47

Keep. Overall I don't think the public see the Royal Family as 'better' than them, but as an intrinsic part of our nations history and cultural identity. I'm not a roaring royalist, but I do enjoy the nostalgia and traditions the family bring. Yes, some of it is sentimentality, but i don't think that's wrong in the hard, politicised world we live in. I like that the royals have no political skin in the game. Documentaries have shown how the Queen was used by prime ministers to discuss things they felt no-one else in the world could be trusted with, and I'm sure that will continue with Charles. A republic just feels too cold and political. Not something that would unify the country at key moments or positively influence our national identity and standing in the world.

RudsyFarmer · 10/09/2022 08:48

I’d certainly kick Andrew out but otherwise keep.

Libertyqueen · 10/09/2022 08:49

If you think a republic is a great plan then just look at President Trump!
Electing your head of state is a very risky business.

People do fawn over heads of state. Think about how Americans behave to Mr President.

Novella4 · 10/09/2022 08:51

We are not Americans. I've never seen a uk politician can fawned over

How about the idea below
Keep your king - but no money land or power
Everyone happy

dudsville · 10/09/2022 08:52

Abolish

KatherineJaneway · 10/09/2022 08:53

Keep

IHateWasps · 10/09/2022 08:53

Abolish.

JasmineIndigo · 10/09/2022 08:53

I'd keep, but on the caveat they they needed to fund themselves.

Bunnyfuller · 10/09/2022 08:55

Abolish. Enough already. The tourists will keep coming for the historic palaces.

lljkk · 10/09/2022 08:55

Abstain. I've always felt as an immigrant I shouldn't have a vote on this specific issue.

GyozaGuiting · 10/09/2022 08:55

Keep- the money they bring in vastly out weighs costs. Now they’ve slimmed down.

Soft diplomacy is not to be underestimated- looked at the most significant world leaders leaving tributes to the queen. It’s not by accident.

Seraphina1993 · 10/09/2022 08:56

All day long keep

I think this a good summary. I watched the people greeting KC at his walks about yesterday at BP - so many there - and I do think it is the centuries long tradition and perceived strength people are attracted to. It keeps us in touch with our ancestors and history, gives us identity and strength as a nation. I do believe there are some powerful people with certain political beliefs who would like to see that all broken down and work hard to undermine it.

Atmywitsend29 · 10/09/2022 08:57

Abolish.

AntlerRose · 10/09/2022 08:58

It would depend what the alternative was. I would abolish if it was alongside proper constitutional reform, with clear seperation of powers etc. I wouldnt just abolish it and have the head of state 'emerge' from the biggest party, replaced at any time only by that party. If im getting rid of a hereditary head of state, i want to directly elect the replacement.

cocktailclub · 10/09/2022 08:58

Abolish

Singleandproud · 10/09/2022 08:59

Keep, with a pared down Royal Family. I like the tradition and pomp and circumstance I think it's important as part of our cultural identity, we are an old country and they maintain our link to the past both the good things that happened and the not so good things. They are able to guide and give perspective to the PM with their year's of experience and familial training. Royal functions, whilst expensive rejuvenate the people and maintain a community feel that I think we are close to losing anyway.

I don't like the idea of the alternative, a revolving door of presidents or similar. Probably the same old Eton and Harrow old boys which are probably loosely related to our current RF anyway or are company executives who see running the country as transactional.

itispersonal · 10/09/2022 09:03

Keep

There will always be an unfair distribution of wealth and power between the rich and poor, being a republic wouldn't change that. America is no better for its people because it has a president and there has been some god awful ones in the last 70 years.

I personally feel a RF does more for a country, especially in trying to unite people of all political stances and religions or none, more than a president ever could!
