Now that the Queen is gone, if there were ever to be a referendum, would you vote to keep or abolish?

I would vote to abolish.

Keep.

Because we might (but for accident of birth order) at this very moment be the subjects of King Andrew. The potential of a lifetime of that would be far far worse than any number of elected presidents, and who is to say we even need one of those at all. The monarch has no power, why would we need to replace it?

Talk about chewing both ends of the stick.

perhaps educate yourself on what they do before spouting off.

Abolish.
if we want pomp and ceremony we can still do that, get someone to dress up as Britannia, wave a bit, read out a speech someone else has written anyway, that’ll do.

Yep, that'll have tourist flicking & bringing in much needed £££

Abolish and keep most of the property and land. The palaces etc have all been built bought and maintained with public money.

I agree with everything ganvough said. The monarchy occupies a vital negative space in our constitution. An enormous amount of power, and their primary responsibility is NOT to use it. They are trained to this from early childhood. You can see that Charles already grasps it, he knows his activism has to go by the wayside now he's king.

Who else will bring that attitude to the Head of State role? Literally, everyone who has succeeded in society has done so by being active, doing things (even where they are born to enormous privilege) and having enormous ego.

If we abolish the monarchy without thinking about how we keep that really crucial check in our constitution we will be far the weaker for it.

I would definitely vote to slim down the royal family and cut off some of the many hangers-on who get public funding but don't seem to deliver much public value.

Finally, it says a great deal about our political class that I think Charles probably knows more, and cares more, about the people who can't heat their homes or feed their children than our current crop of leaders.

Inkanta · 10/09/2022 08:00

Abolish, I think. Still, a bit of me likes the pomp and circumstance of a monarchy, but the older I get, the harder I find it to square it with the inequalities in our society

Yes, and now that the queen has passed I think the time has come.

I want precise details and costs of the alternative versus current costs, plus details of how an alternative would be removed and what type of voting system there would be before I could answer that question.

This!

Keep

McPancreas · 10/09/2022 08:04

Keep but no public money, remove their power to edit laws and make them subject to inheritance tax on all assets Inc land, Palaces etc

Not sure how long they would last if the above was actually put in place but it would certainly be a fairer set up.

AbstractDream · 10/09/2022 08:06

I'd like abolish but looking at our society, I'd say keep.
I think having that tier of a good wise monarch above prime ministers probably keeps them in check and must be humbling and grounding for them.
Society is strange and many people seem to need a figurehead to look up to. It may as well be a wise monarch than a prime minister wielding temporary power.
Our monarchs have seen much history and come across as wise and gentle. They can be used for good.
The danger, as pp pointed out, is if the younger generations change.

@wonderstuff There's always going to be some crisis going on - that's the governments job to deal with it. However, the government has had all summer before the queen died to focus on the energy crisis but they decided to focus on rishi Vs liz and went on holiday instead!
I'm quite enjoying the news today, and I enjoyed Charles' speech. It makes a change from talking about electricity prices and cost of living!

For me, the energy prices and cost of living crisis are the most important things and they should be the focus of the news.

These issues affect every single one of us.

Instead it's wall to wall coverage of the death of a 96 year old woman.

I also wonder what bad news will get buried in the next 10 days.

Novella4 · 10/09/2022 08:16

@AbstractDream
I'm sorry abstract - I'm sitting in my hands here - 'wise and gentle ' monarchs ??
You do know how they got the land and money in the first place don't you? It's still the same today - they are just better at hiding it .
