Historian (former advisor to Horrible Histories) Greg Jenner has confirmed that we are now Carolingians!

I wonder if he's also advising them that the need a new verse to the "monarchs song" ??

Andypandy799 · 09/09/2022 08:01

So much bad spelling, disrespectful and incorrect comments on this thread, show some respect even if you are not a royalist smh. Obviously too many mn had too much alcohol

FourChimneys · 09/09/2022 08:02

We always have Radio 4 on in the morning but they only had one news item today , basically variations of "the queen is dead" which we already knew. So we have put some CDs on instead which is actually rather nice.

I hope the BBC get back to proper news soon. There are plenty of other things happening in the world.

EdithWeston · 09/09/2022 08:04

Catherine will become “Princess William of Wales”

That's what she would have been had Prince William not been given a Dukedom as a wedding present

She will become the Princess of Wales if/when William is created Prince of Wales - and could be styled Catherine, Princess of Wales if a first name were needed

They have already become Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, as the Cornwall Duchy passes automatically to heir, but it's likely that they won't use it until after the funeral (aside from there being no gap between monarchs, it's a mark of respect to refrain from using your newly inherited title until the previous holder is in the ground)

Although that may be true, I think it will be time that comes to say what the next 20-40 years are referred to as.
So although we had Victorian and Edwardian eras we then moved more into 'inter war and post war' as 'Georgian' means Georges I-IV.

If Charles doesn't rule for say 15 year minimum and nothing greatly historical happens, then his era may get 'merged' with William's under 'Windsor Kings' or some such.

I hadn't really heard the term 'modern Elizabethans' before this century. (& To be honest I can't imagine modern Britain using the term Carolingians).

Only new ones that are manufactured during his reign. The old ones will stay, we have ones that have GR still on them, so I think the ER ones will be in place for a long time yet.

We have a VR one set in the rectory wall by the village church. Time passes slowly here. I am not a monarchies at all but it is sad that she has gone . Many changes to come

Thank god you remember that too. I was just saying it to friends and they all flatly denied it. Thought I was losing it.

me too, I still remember old money though and it having the old king on it.

Why though? Why do people need to respect the monarchy?

AnneElliott · 09/09/2022 08:14

@Seemslikeaniceday my understanding is that David Cameron tried to remove the Queens birthday from civil servants but was tartly reminded by the Queens private Secretary that Her Majesty had granted the day to civil servants on her accession and that therefore only Her Majesty could rescind it....

The Horrible Histories Monarchs song is now out of date.

We have a book on the British monarchs by Antonia Fraser and I was thinking only at the weekend that despite being published in the 70s (I think) it was still up to date.

Not any more.

Kashmirsilver · 09/09/2022 08:16

After comments on Twitter, some will be looking for new employment.😂

Andypandy799 · 09/09/2022 08:18

@Underanothersky

i didn’t say respect the monarchy. She was a human being with a huge heart who gave her life up to serve her role to the best of her ability.

What about having some empathy for All if her family and friends and the thousands of peoples hearts she has touched in her life? Oh and as a patron to hundreds of charities and leader of the Coe.

CaveMum · 09/09/2022 08:19

@EdithWeston true on the Princess William of Wales front, I’d forgotten that!

I’m guessing once the King has been crowned, the Earl of Wessex will be made Duke of Edinburgh. Question is what happens when the Duke of York goes, technically the title goes to Harry as the Monarch’s second son but given he has stepped back might they change the protocol and hold it back for Louis?

Andypandy799 · 09/09/2022 08:21

@Underanothersky

P.s I hope this doesn’t spoil any plans you had

SpinCityBlues · 09/09/2022 08:25

I think ‘Carolingian’ may seem a little too mediaeval and European for most of the modern UK to adopt; but I like it.

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/09/2022 08:26

William and Catherine have been using the Cornwall title as of yesterday.

It's things like 'Princess William' that I think should change. It is like calling someone Mrs Edward Smith or whatever. I think it is outdated, and if we want to keep the monarchy modern and relevant then this would be a small something to signal it. Buckingham Palace can decide to change this kind of thing themselves, and they should.

It was Frances Maude in her Diamond Jubilee year!

You are quite correct only the Queen could rescind it, but she is no longer here. The questions will be whether or not the current Minister for the Cabinet Office (Edward Argar) wants to retain it and rename it as the King’s Birthday and whether or not they need King Charles’ permission to retain it and rename it.

I think the word “respect” has changed meaning over time.
The only job of the modern monarchy is to look out for the U.K. and Commonwealth and represent it in the world. There are lots of reasons why having a Head of State not associated with your political system is good for a country. The Queen has seen off 15 prime ministers and worked up until she went. There are lots of very wealthy families across the world. Few are as transparent and bound as this one.

Also not necessarily given straight away. Charles didn't have it until well into the 60s.

Charles was made Prince of Wales in 1958 when he was nine years old. He was invested in 1968, but the investiture is a formality and not necessary to have the title.

Awwww 🙂

What does the promise say?

I think we've discussed this before (possibly under a different name for me) - do we think William will become Prince of Wales before or after the coronation? Will they want to present the line of succession at the coronation with the titles they will have going forward? Or does Charles get his moment of glory first?

Why disrespectful? The first words spoken to Charles would be along the lines of the Queen is dead long live the King - brutal when you have just watched your mum die but not disrespectful.

For the vast majority of people we have only ever known Her Majesty, part of grieving is working out what has changed in our world e.g. the words to the national anthem, HM becomes His Majesty’s, QC to KC .

We may finally see what the 'fourth plinth' in Trafalgar Square has been kept empty for.
