What is the difference between the two terms?

Her or His Majesty is for the monarch. Her or His Royal Highness is a prince or princess (by birth or marriage).

@CorvusPurpureus
"a life played on hard mode & without complaint"

What a brilliant phrase!

The Horrible Histories Monarchs song is now out of date.

Already updated in our house, just ironing out the finer details to make it scan. Think George six has lost his six (none of the others had numbers), so Liz goes up a line 'And King Charles to complete the mix' is stretched a little.

For the postbox nerds - almost unique example due to design feature …

Ooooft!

Genuinely think I've had an awakening on passions for postboxes like some strange interest/hobby 😂

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/09/2022 11:14

TV schedules, I don't suppose 'Have I Got New For You' will be on.

LovingTheseAutumnSnippets · 09/09/2022 11:23

The forthcoming series of The Crown may not be appropriate at the moment.

Post box nerd alert
Victoria was the first monarch to have her initials on post boxes there are a couple of very old ones that are plain kicking around (I think guernsey?)
george v there are quite a few you can tell these by very plain GR on them
Edward vii has the vii on them they are quite ornate
Edward VIII much rarer there’s one in mull in Tobermory with viii on
george vi much more ornate than his grandad look newer and have the vi on.
Elizabeth there are many and the ones we are most familiar with.

it will be interesting to see new CR ones what style he will chose. I think he’ll be quite modest I also don’t think he’ll have iii on as it could never be confused with Charles ii

Another Post Box nerd here! I have got lots of friends into spotting too. Be quite exciting to see a King Charles Post Box (yup I need to get out more).

RIP Your Majesty and thank you for your service.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/09/2022 11:55

As the Duke of Cornwall, William is now entitled to any unclaimed estates (ie no wills, no heirs found) from Cornish dead. Along with lots of other Duchy of Cornwall money.

Bad news for Charles who loses this income stream, but he is also now the new Duke of Lancaster so will benefit from the same from dead Lancastrians.

Could be "king Charles three" maybe to make it scan?

Parliament goes six days a week (just announced that parliament is sitting tomorrow in part to allow senior members to take their new oath to the King).

Your department must have made different arrangements as per Civil Service Management Code www.gov.uk/government/publications/civil-servants-terms-and-conditions

Section 9.2.4 sets out the entitlement.

I would check that if i were you @Aberration

As a fellow civil servant everyone should be getting an additional 1 day fir the Queen's Birthday.

Back in 2017 ( I think) there were 2.5 privilege days under review:
▪︎ 1 full day = Queen's birthday
▪︎ 0.5 half a day = Maunday Thursday
▪︎ 1 full day = I think this was a christmas/festive day.

They tried to remove all of them. They couldn't take the 1 day Queen's Birthday from us. The other 1.5 days was removed.

Even as a new starter, you should have been getting 1 day privilege day for the Queen's Birthday, if you're not I would be asking questions.

I haven't RTFT but some of the chambers' websites have already changed their senior counsel to KC. I saw a couple that had changed them all to KC individually but still under the header Queen's Counsel, and one guy was listed as Joe Bloggs KQC - some web monkey obviously working in a hurry.

There's a thread about a QC, who is already now a KC on the firms website, and the address which had a -qc in it now seamlessly redirects to the -kc version. Someone very busy or just they had things set up ready to swap.

Question why did Departments cease to have the Christmas and Mandy Thursday Privilege Days in 2012 but retained the Queen’s Birthday? You may recall there was a process by which they were absorbed into Annual Leave for existing Civil Servants and New Civil Servants were/are given a lower annual leave allowance I.e. less 1.5 days.

The Queen’s Birthday is/was loosely tied to her official birthday (end of May) not her actual birthday (April). If it remains I wouldn’t see the date changing.

The Queen's birthday, which is called Privilege Day was granted by HMQ Elizabeth II and nothing or no one can remove it but her. The Govt tried to in 2014 but were unable to because it could only be removed by her and she didn't give her approval, so it continued to stand until yesterday.

What happens with it next isn't something either you or I can possibly predict, as it hasn't even been discussed for obvious reasons. I expect there are greater priorities at this time!

In my defence it takes up little more than half an hour every 20 years 😂 although I am quite excited to see a CR one.

9.2.4 states ”Unless separate arrangements have been authorised, departments and agencies must grant staff a holiday in recognition of the Queen’s Official Birthday on either the Friday preceding or the Tuesday after the Spring Bank Holiday.”

This implies some departments may have a different arrangements. So my statement was correct.

minou123 · 09/09/2022 15:23

Sorry @Seemslikeaniceday, I shouldn't have quoted your post. I am in agreement with you.

My suggestions was for the poster to go and double check.

In my department, we do have separate arrangements as we do not have to take the Queen's Birthday privilege day on the Friday or Tuesday. We can take it anytime in the months of May and June.

I would find it strange if any Civil Servant has had the day removed from them.

Thanks, I agree any variation would be very unusual.

Going forward it will be a political decision. Given what is currently going on in the world it will be a low priority. However, I know it will be on the to do list before May 2023. Personally I don’t think the King would remove it.

FabulousFryingpan · 09/09/2022 15:56

Queen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer, QLTR, is a little known Scottish organisation that deals with ownerless property, such as treasure hoards and people who die without obvious heirs. It's a very interesting organisation, and the Crown Agent for Scotland is the head of it (he is also the Head of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service).

I'm assuming their name will change, but for the people dealing with them regularly (not a lot of those, but a couple of my colleagues do) it will take a while to get used to saying KLTR instead of QLTR as it's usually referred to.

EdithWeston · 09/09/2022 18:14

Another change

In his speech, the King created the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge (and Rothesay) as Prince and Princess of Wales

CaveMum · 09/09/2022 07:53

Historian (former advisor to Horrible Histories) Greg Jenner has confirmed that we are now Carolingians!

Also on the subject of William and the PoW title, it is not automatic and has to be gifted by the Monarch. For now he becomes Duke of Cornwall. When he is invested as PoW, Catherine will become “Princess William of Wales” or “Catherine, Princess of Wales” - she will not be Princess Catherine.

She will be generally known as “Kate Middleton” until she dies 🙄
Even though William is now Prince of Wales.

JustLyra · 10/09/2022 10:18

Princess Beatrice will now be a Counsellor of State. It’s the first four in line over 21 plus the spouse of the Monarch.

Why? It’s very rare that it’s needed so hardly an issue. They work in pairs anyway so anything involving her will include William (given that the other two are Harry and Andrew they’re not likely to be involved much):

Who else would it be? She’ll be replaced by George when he’s of age.
