We can all not bother watching the King's Speech on Christmas Day as is tradition. We could watch the film though. Grin

I think they may try and avoid having another Princess of Wales

Why - there have been about a dozen of them, dating back to 1252

Can't see why they would want to discontinue

Only new ones that are manufactured during his reign. The old ones will stay, we have ones that have GR still on them, so I think the ER ones will be in place for a long time yet.

We have a VR box at the end of our lane.

I feel it's going to be a long time before I'll be able reliably to sing the national anthem correctly.

Wow! I'm amazed at this I've never seen a VR post box! Now I want to go find one! Don't worry I won't stalk you to find out where your lane is I genuinely promise 😂

Would they still appear on the balcony and whatnot though?

Well, Charles is famous for wanting a pared-down Royal Family, so the likelihood is not - plus, the York Princesses both have their own family lives now, with non-Royal husbands. Appearing on the balcony isn't a constitutional thing, it's just down to what the present monarch wants.

When someone gets sent down it will be at his majesty's pleasure.

Best username ever!

I think they'll be desperate to have perfect Kate in that role. If she has any sense, she'll be dreading it.

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/09/2022 23:16

There are loads of VR post boxes around.

There will be lots of changes. Does anyone know what happens to the business with a royal warrant? I've just poured a large sherry - Harvey's Bristol Cream - and wondered.

Hellocatshome · 08/09/2022 23:17

Apparently a Canadian Citizenship ceremony was delayed while they decided how to change the wording as it used to involve pledging allegiance to Queen Elizabeth and they didn't know what name the King was going to use.

TheWristBoundLatexBitch · 08/09/2022 23:17

Legoland is shut.

I think football matches (and all sports) may be cancelled all weekend (not sure if longer.

No comedy shows (I see Sarah Millican has cancelled)

It looks likely that Trevor Sinclair is jobless (hopefully!)

Sorry but I think that's a load of nonsense. The title has been around for hundreds of years.

Prince William is now the Duke of Cornwall & Cambridge & will be Prince of Wales, Prince Edward will be the Duke of Edinburgh

Apparently they need to be granted a new warrant, but likely to be a grace period.

This Guardian article is quite interesting on practical changes.

keeprunning55 · 08/09/2022 23:20

I went to a church service for a new vicar at 7pm tonight and they had to change the service to swear allegiance to the King. It felt so surreal.

I don't think they're that rare. There are quite a lot round here (London suburbs)

Eggsley · 08/09/2022 23:23

@CaptainBarbosa there is a VR postbox in Tudor Square in Tenby.

Someone must be busy getting a new design for stamps ready to print. And post boxes. Presumably new ones will say CR on them?

The Queen's youthful profile on stamps is so iconic the image is a design classic. Not sure Charles can pull that one off!

FunsizedandFabulous · 08/09/2022 23:25

I'm a tubeworker & the poster I put up about the Queen's passing is in black ink instead of the usual blue.

I expect my traffic will rise as people make gheir pilgrimages to Buckingham Palace. I've already seen loads of people with bunches of flowers on my way home.

Always4Brenner · 08/09/2022 23:25

Will I have to get a new passport? Mines not a year old.

earsup · 08/09/2022 23:26

post strike cancelled so hoping my cartier bangle arrives on time...!

heidipi · 08/09/2022 23:26

The poor chap on ITN earlier had a terrible time with the changes - he referred to Charles as His Majesty The Queen three times in a row - by the end of it Mary Nightingale was practically shouting “it’s King you chump!” He’ll probably never be seen again 😁

They'll all change names - but they won't start the changeover until after the funeral.

Most will stay with their current patron, but with a new title.

But those formerly held by the Queen might also be continued by the King (in addition to those he continues from his time as PoW) if the purveyors continue to supply the monarch

Charitable patronages will need redistribution.

Some charities are probably going to lose a senior Royal patron.

The roles of Colonel in Chief of various bits of the Armed Forces of all the countries for which Queen was monarch will need to re rediistributed - some will stay with the monarch, others may be reassigned (and there may be a cascade as the ones held by the recent Prince of Wales might either stay with him or be redistributed)

Antarcticant · 08/09/2022 22:46

We will have to remember, in our half-drunk and bloated post-prandial Christmas haze, to shout 'It's time for the King!' at 3pm. And we will have to practise our humorous impersonations of Charles, instead of squeaking away like the Queen, while we pass the Quality Street and burp.

I wondered to my dh on our dog walk if she had already recorded the Christmas Day speech, as I thought it was done much earlier in the year

Always4Brenner · 08/09/2022 23:25

No, they remain valid - just like coins, bank notes and stamps remain valid. They'll gradually get pushed out by the newer issues

Always4Brenner · 08/09/2022 23:25

No, I can't imagine so. It will probably be like money, accepted till it's phased out/expired.

Passport office can barely keep up with new applications, never mind reprinting the millions already out there. If it is the case though, somewhere some high ranking civil servant in the passport office is very very stressed tonight and maybe rocking in a corner pulling their hair out at the thought of it 😂

Leger races cancelled tomorrow

All racing has been cancelled tomorrow, not just the St Leger meeting.
