@Member82

The Queen played a part in Northern Ireland's peace process with her words and her actions. She visited Belfast more than 20 times but it was perhaps her visit to Dublin in 2011 that was the most politically and historically significant. She was the first British monarch to visit the city for more than 100 years. The Queen was also the first to set foot in the Republic of Ireland since it gained independence, following the Anglo-Irish war. She used the ground-breaking four-day trip to try to heal the wounds of the past.

From Twitter:

The US President ordering all flags on public buildings throughout America and on its embassies around the world to be flown at half mast until the Queen’s funeral in ten days time. Can you imagine this happening for any other human on this planet?

Member82 · 09/09/2022 12:46

@RampantIvy

You think she healed the "wounds of the past" by having a few fancy dinners in Ireland and speaking a cupla focail as gaeilge? Her visit caused mass protest from many people who viewed it as an affront to our national heroes and an unnecessary expense being paid for by our tax payers. Go to Twitter and type "Irish twitter" or "black twitter" into the search bar and you will get an accurate view on how people really feel about being colonised and oppressed. Or open a history book printed outside of the U.K. You cannot rely on the BBC to accurately report the truth on her passing or her character. She will not be remembered as a bridge builder or trauma healer to anyone other than the English.

And to the person asking why I contributed to this thread. I hadn't intended to contribute until I saw her being given credit for "service" to Ireland, just one country she and her ancestors tried to destroy.

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 12:50

I'm sorry you are so bitter @Member82.
I'm sure some of my ancestors did some execrable things. I know for a fact that my great uncle was a Nazi. However I don't feel responsible for that, and I would hope that other people wouldn't hold that against me either.

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 12:51

And I don't think for one minute that the late queen herself tried to destroy Northern Ireland. That's such a ridiculous statement.

UnagiForLife · 09/09/2022 12:53

Theresa May’s speech is beautiful. Just listening now. Why did we get rid of her as PM?

vera99 · 09/09/2022 13:06

She even shook hands with Martin MacGuinness who was reputed to be an IRA commander as well as Sinn Fein and they blew up Lord Mountbatten. She could have easily avoided that so very telling that she would very publicly show forgiveness

MarshaBradyo · 09/09/2022 13:09

May did a great speech. Lots of humour too nice to hear laughing not jeering in that environment

Member82 · 09/09/2022 13:10

@vera99

Lord Mountbatten was a casualty of a war the English brought to Ireland. Martin McGuinness was an Irish soldier in that war. She should have begged for forgiveness, not shaken his hand.

vera99 · 09/09/2022 13:11

Just seen the other post and fully understand the anger and history a million Irish died or fled the country in the Great Famine a greater genocide per capita than probably any other country whilst the British establishment stood back and did nothing. But most flag waving Brits don't like the horrors of history to upset the patriotic narrative. Still stand by my other post though.

jennakong · 09/09/2022 13:16

Even our most nationalist of local newspapers in Belfast has a front page dedicated to the Queen under the headline 'A Friend of Ireland' today, and Michelle O'Neill paid her tribute last night. You must be quite extreme in your views, @Member82 .

jennakong · 09/09/2022 13:17

Two children died in the Mountbatten boat bombing, @Member82. they were not war casualties but victims of spineless bomb-planting terrorists who crept away. I think you sound pretty shameful.

Member82 · 09/09/2022 13:21

@jennakong

Okay, not casualties...what word to use?...Tell me what word the English use for the millions of people who were killed throughout their colonies and I'll use that word instead of casualties.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/09/2022 13:22

I always thought she’d go on to at least 100, like her mother. I dare say a broken heart hastened her end - not just losing Philip - her ‘strength and stay’ for so many years, but all the Andrew business, not to mention Harry and Meghan.

I just fail to see how the history of British colonialism justifies two men, fully enfranchised and citizens of a democratic country, in planting a bomb on a boat that kills not only its target but an elderly lady and two innocent young boys, one of whom was a working class Irish Catholic. I will never see that as anything but indiscriminate, unmitigated savagery. Not sorry.

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 13:48

@Member82 you clearly have an axe to grind, and a very massive chip on your shoulder, but now is not the time or the place.

What a fascinating and prescient article, written 5 years ago.

She was the world's greatest lady and I can't imagine the country without her.

Rosie22xx · 09/09/2022 18:37

People do realised the royals colonised so many countries right? And stole many jewels that belong to different countries, right? Or do people like to forget this information? If she was so nice, she would have issued deep apologies and refret and issued back the jewels to where they rightly belong. She also helped pay off Prince Andrew the paedo. There are many things wrong with the royal family, that an ordinary family would be hated upon. Open your eyes people, actually think about who you respect and support, it's a good representation of your own character too. Wake up.

chezzabee80 · 09/09/2022 18:45

Feels like a death in the family, so sad she did us proud and I'm sure her son our King will do her proud, I feel lucky she was our monarch for so long from her young age, she was precious, rest in peace

Ridiculous, dangerous nonsense!

McGuinness was a terrorist directly responsible for the murder of 30 people. That's why he was known as The Butcher Of The Bogside. And responsible indirectly for countless more murders he gave the order to.

McGuinness was a terrorist. Not a soldier by any means.

The Troubles wasn't a war. It was a local conflict literally started by locals. Nor was Mountbatten some kind of combatant to a war. He was on a fishing boat - kids were also blown up on that boat by Provisional Sinn Féin and Provisional IRA! You going to argue those boys were combatants or so-called collateral damage? Wise up!

The vast majority of people in the Republic of Ireland weren't protesting the Queen's visit to the Republic of Ireland. And the Irish political class were there too.

Pretty much every developed country has done this over the decades, centuries and millennia. Britain was probably the most successful
one recently. Do you feel the same about every other country that has done this?
