I'm not really a Royalist, but this is sad news. The fact it has been announced in the HOC makes me think she must be really quite unwell.

She is just such a constant, a link to a world that no longer exists. A person that actually believes in duty to the country.

At 96 a person can go downhill very fast, the senior royals would not have been called unless it was serious.

Antarcticant · 08/09/2022 13:55

BBC referring to 'Count' and Countess of Wessex 🙄He's an Earl, for goodness sake. Poor reporting.

ShowOfHands · 08/09/2022 13:55

I nursed my Grandma at the end, just before the pandemic. She was the same age as HM and we had an extraordinary day a few days before she died when she was able to watch television, chat, say her goodbyes and smile. She was frail with bruised hands from the cannula, not eating, very near the end but we had a last magical day with her before she deteriorated significantly in the next couple of days. Very soon, all family were called and constant medical supervision recommended. She died that night.

It was a good death and that's all you can wish for.

To spend your last days and months doing your duty as you have for your entire life is extraordinary and I wish the family peace in the quiet moments.

It's really sad. I feel for her family at this time We lost dh's caring and fiesty (she was a bit like catherine tate's character!) nan in her mid 90's quite suddenly. I remember the call from mil to say she was in hospital and we needed to get there. She was such a focal point for the whole family and she really kept everyone together. That generation are special with their tales of war and rationing and life before modern conveniences.

At least her family will have lots to look back on. Photos, videos, memories of those who knew and met her. An amazing life lived.

I hope she sees everyone she wants to see and this time is well managed for her.

CaveMum · 08/09/2022 13:55

At the risk of sounding glib, she’s got a runner in the 4.35 at Epsom this afternoon. I wouldn’t be surprised if she holds on for the result.

LIZS · 08/09/2022 13:56

Newsreaders always have black tie/dress on standby for an announcement.

HonorHiding · 08/09/2022 13:56

Unforgettablefire · 08/09/2022 13:55

What does a black tie mean?

Protocol for mourning is to wear a black tie.

Deguster · 08/09/2022 13:56

I am no monarchist (the contrary in fact) but her passing will be very poignant because I can’t remember a time in my life when she wasn’t our head of state (however much I might disagree with the system that put her there).

The news has just reported that Harry and meghan are also on their way to Balmoral

Quite. We always joke that my grandfather held on until a Monday morning so he/we didn't have the pay the Undertakers out of hours costs.

I really do think she would have wanted to see the back of Johnson though.

Seems urgent.

Sideorderofchips · 08/09/2022 13:58

Makes me feel sad. I can almost imagine her welcoming liz truss going 'right judt get this bit sorted then I can rest' sort of thing

She always had a cheeky smile for something. Plus like others said she's always been there so it's a weird thought soon it will be someone else

maddy68 · 08/09/2022 13:58

The Sussex's are on their way it's been announced

Apparently all of her children are there. No mention of other spouse’s with the exception of Camilla.

padfootlives · 08/09/2022 13:58

I feel really sad about this. I don't think the royal family will be the same without her. So much controversy surrounds the rest of them whereas Queenie has always been a dedicated, dignified constant hasnt she? Even if you're not a royalist you can't question her dedication to the country, she has given up her life to serve and carry out her role.

I remember watching The Queen with Helen Mirren and the phrase 'duty first, self second' and that really does seem to be how she's lived her life. God bless her.

Unforgettablefire · 08/09/2022 13:58

@HonorHiding thank you. Sorry I didn't know.

😂Bet she has a few quid on it.

bornonvalentines · 08/09/2022 14:00

I hope this isn't distasteful (forgive me) but the organisation involving the Queen passing in Scotland is beautiful. I believe there will be a procession on the Royal Mile? I'm sure a Scottish poster will know more.

May HM depart in peace, to the God whom she has always leaned on.

I hope it wins. She would love that.

I like to think that when the cameras were gone that she gave fuckwit BJ both barrels as only old people can. I also hope she gave LIz some strong words.

When my late Mother died I was told to come to the hospital as soon as I could, she had already died and I wasn’t informed until I got there

If Harry and Meghan are on their way they must be expecting this to be the end. I'm sorry for those who love her.

I’m in tears here 😢
The fact her family are travelling to see her. I can’t comprehend our country without her

I can't stop crying & I'm Irish, born & bred in Co.Galway! She toucher the hearts of billions, thinking of all in the U. K, she is irreplaceable.
