Going to be moving into my car

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

@MaryHoldTheCandleSteadyWhileIShaveTheChickensLeg
They don't come into their homes now 🙄

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean?

Do you leave them in the car while you're working?

Beepbeepenergy · 03/09/2022 17:46

Could you and your dogs stay in you work place as you say you have a business? Just a thought

MissAmbrosia · 03/09/2022 17:47

What advice do you think anyone can give? You cannot keep the dogs - it sounds really clear to me.

Howdoidothisanymore · 03/09/2022 17:47

Spare room.co.uk lets you filter to pets h- here’s an example

Are you Cornwall? I seem to remember you are.

You need to be bidding. No pets policies rarely are enforced anyway.

I'm afraid you are misinformed that no pets policies are rarely enforced. I have several lets and tenants are aware that breach of this provision is an automatic Section 21 notice. Dogs often do such damage to houses that need painting and deep cleaning that few landlords accept. If the OP got evicted for this she wouldn't have a reference either

If you are going to force your dogs to live in a car you are cruel. I rescue dogs so please don’t think I’m saying it flippantly, but you need to think whether the reactive one has any quality of life. What if something happens to you? If you can’t afford a home you can’t afford the behaviourist support required for the dog. Sometimes we need our pets more than they need us.

I can afford a home! But they won't rent to me. Please actually read what I have put.
I have an amazing behaviourist and friend onboard with her.
No being in a car is not ideal but what else can we do. I have tried literally everything. I am broken from trying. I will not lose my girls, they are all I have left.

I believe the op is a carer. So no “official” office as such. Work place would be clients homes.

CornishTiger · 03/09/2022 17:48

@MarieG10 I’m talking about social housing.

FusionChefGeoff · 03/09/2022 17:48

If you wanted to relocate I'm pretty sure you could get care work easily and rents around my way are well under that for a 1 bed (Midlands)

I'm a self employed carer I travel to peoples homes. I don't have a business location.

Fortunately that's just your opinion. I can and will keep my dogs!

I think you should take a bedsit and don’t mention the dogs. I think that lying is justifiable under the circumstance. I suppose they might try to evict you when they find out, but maybe not and even if they do it will take a while to evict so at least you will have had somewhere warm to stay over winter.

Yes, she's explained that upthread.

ememem84 · 03/09/2022 17:51

It’s a shit situation @Dobbysgotthesocks and I wish you luck with everything.

Maltester71 · 03/09/2022 17:51

It does look as though, unless something suitable comes up that the OP is successful in securing, she is moving into her car.

she can afford a home but it needs a garden really.

she doesn’t share with others

shes bid on everything

keeping the dogs is the most important thing

so yes, given no all of the limitations, and given the scarcity of a suitable property, yes, OP, you are indeed moving into your car

I have read what you said, your salary isn’t enough at £28k or you could pay your way out of this.

Keeping the dogs in a car is cruel. If your behaviourist is also a friend then your dog is used to them, so maybe ask them to take care of your dogs while you sort your life out? You need the dogs more than they need you, do the right thing for them.

I would report you for cruelty, you do not have a suitable home for your pets.

MrsMcisaCt · 03/09/2022 17:54

I've no advice. Just want to say I'm so sorry you have cancer and you are in this situation. Life is so unfair. Good luck x

JudgeRindersMinder · 03/09/2022 17:54

You need to think about for properties even though they say no pets.

When I was a landlord we advertised as no pets, but would have been very open to a conversation with a potential tenant

JudgeRindersMinder · 03/09/2022 17:55

I’m so sorry you’re in this situation, this country is going to ratshit

Tierne · 03/09/2022 17:56

I thought the law had changed so now tenants can have pets?

OP either dont mention your dogs OR: what about a campsite?

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 03/09/2022 17:56

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 17:22

@TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination please read the thread. I cannot do live in care.

@Dobbysgotthesocks

I HAVE read the thread! & past ones.

I know you have dogs,
I know one is reactive.
Iknow you think she wouldn't cope without you.

I know you have Autism.

i know you want your own space.

i know you'd rather live in the car than lose your dogs.

I know you have cancer & are on chemo

Therefore I know you CANNOT live in your car.

I know part of your way of thinking is down to your Autism (and I wish I had a granny Annexe in Devon I could offer you the use of, but sadly I don't.) but you need to accept that the situation is not ideal & the ideal solution is highly unlikely to just pop up at the 11th hour. You are going to HAVE to compromise

IF you make yourself ill, which you will do living in a car, & end up in hospital, your dogs will go into care, a loving foster home IF you're lucky & IF you're lucky you'll get them back.

TO AVOID that, you're going to need to settle for something less than ideal, which may be a job as a live in carer, it maybe a house share for you & foster care for your dogs.

at the very least you need to be applying for everything you can afford (pet friendly or not, forgiveness is easier to get than permission) & not thinking about the value for money. If your anxious dog can go to dog fields it can sure go for a wee in a grass verge, it must do that now during your working day as you take them with you. You might just have to cope without a garden until you can find another property. Your car won't have a private garden.

you need to contact ALL the charities suggested (even if you've done so before) & ask for help.

if you lose your health totally, you hugely risk losing your dogs. You cannot live in a car, in Devon, over winter.

i get you just want to vent! But that's not going to get you housed.

Summerslam · 03/09/2022 17:56

I'm trying to figure out the logistics of living in your car with two dogs. You've explained you can use the gym for toilet/shower facilities.

How will you charge your phone? Can you pop the phone on charge in one of your client's homes, if they don't mind?

How will you sleep? Do you have a decent warm sleeping bag?

Have you thought about how safe you will be parked up overnight on your own?

knackeredagain · 03/09/2022 17:57

I’d 100% get a caravan in this situation. It’s not ideal but it’s a huge improvement on living in a car, for you and the dogs.

Runningintolife · 03/09/2022 17:57

You have no good choices and are entitled to make your own decision about your priorities and compromises. I would do a test week in the car. Don't go to your house at all. See what the dogs make of it. I wouldn't make the same decision as you.
