What’s classed as “chavvy” if you’re poor…

But classy if you’re rich? I’ll start…

cocaine
floor beds for children
Speaking a second language
Day drinking
babysitters

“Poor” people walking round a shop speaking a different language are viewed differently to MC people walking round a shop speaking a different language

Surely the point is to ridicule the class system and show how hypocritical it is?

That’s how I see it too.
I’d say having more than two (or three) kids definitely falls into the category the OP mentioned.

Justanotherwinter · 02/09/2022 12:45

The babysitter one -

poor person gets babysitter to go out drinking - chav
mc person gets babysitter to go out drinking - acceptable

Shooting wildlife.
Not the done thing with your air rifle over on the waste ground up the back of the estate - quite the done thing on the estate. Tally ho!

LaundryBin · 02/09/2022 12:47

Reading the Racing Post.

That’s a good one!

Bestcatmum · 02/09/2022 12:48

White tracksuits and white trainers.

Justanotherwinter · 02/09/2022 12:48

Having a ND child
poor - just doing it to get more benefits, probably caused by smoking drugs in pregnancy etc (when they didn’t even do any) or badly behaved child
rich - poor you, you’re doing so well with DC

Not my views

Oops, lost my quote.

The one about shooting!

MsMariaReynolds · 02/09/2022 12:48

Unusual baby names

BinBandit · 02/09/2022 12:48

Having a car that you are "restoring" - fine if it's a classic jaguar, not so much if it's a 1998 fiesta.

Glitteringapples · 02/09/2022 12:49

Marrying a cousin 😀

10HailMarys · 02/09/2022 12:49

Kids with 'unique' names
Having loads of dogs
Having a large family
Letting the children 'go feral'
Drinking every day
Drugs
Committing acts of animal cruelty for fun

knackeredcat · 02/09/2022 12:49

Rich people taking a last minute holiday on a whim - fine, travel is so enriching for the children, etc.

Poorer people - whispers of "how can they afford that", "benefits are too generous", "disrupting their children's education but what do people like that care about education", tut tutting, etc.

(Not my opinion, just general observations)

Kids (especially boys) with long shaggy hair.

Giving your children phones/iPads when they're toddlers.
MC/UC- it's educational. It will help them get a head start at school.
WC- sticking a screen in front of child's face because they can't be arsed parenting.

InMySpareTime · 02/09/2022 12:54

More debt than you could possibly pay off.

Poor = feckless, shouldn't have access to credit

Rich = great use of leverage to secure future assets

Like those two on Grand Designs this week who borrowed hundreds of thousands of pounds on short-term loans to finance a self build and ended up with a million pound mortgage.
How is that better than someone getting a payday loan to see them through the 5 week waiting period for UC or first pay check?

adriftabroad · 02/09/2022 12:54

Dodging paying tax

SunnyD44 · 02/09/2022 12:54

Depends on the alcohol!

Diamond White 2 litre bottle (or whatevetrthe current drink of choice is) is 'chavvy'.

A chilled bottle of Dom Perignon from crystal flutes isn't!

Isn’t this the issue though!

That unless you’re drinking expensive alcohol (aka rich) then it’s a problem.

Day drinking/drinking in the park is the same whether it’s Dom Perignon or a can of larger.
Yet people judge it differently.
