But classy if you’re rich? I’ll start…

cocaine
floor beds for children
Speaking a second language
Day drinking
babysitters

But don't the points need to fit both groups?

Like Gambling.

Game of bingo or trip to bookies - chavvy.
Professional gambler - welcome to the family, old boy.

Only if done in the way you’ve shown. Otherwise it’s clear as mud.

A garden sofa? You mean those horrendous wicker or plastic monstrosities? The ones usually squashed in beside a table, six chairs, a stool thing etc etc? They are definitely not middle class…

I don’t think you’re understanding the thread!

Cam22 · 02/09/2022 15:31

Why don’t people make clear with it the two groups they are referring to? The lists need to be clarified. 🙄

The whole bloody point is to discuss similar behaviours which are viewed very differently for different classes.

So if you're familiar with the UK class system you shouldn't need the differences pointed out.

It's not just a "list things chavvy or posh people do" thread. It's drawing a direct comparison in the judgements made about each group.

Second hand furniture
not working for a living

Working class children are "naughty", middle class children are "spirited".

Definitely!

Cam22 · 02/09/2022 15:43

Fire pits are dire.

Old cars
designer handbags

HoppingKangaroo · 02/09/2022 15:46

I don't understand how speaking a second language is seen as chavy?

SAHMs How is one parent at home chavvy?

Double-barrelled surnames Can someone explain this one to me?

Breastfeeding I think this is seen as middle class nowadays especially surely? It's the working class mums I see bottle feeding.

Window cleaners Do you mean the job of window cleaner or paying someone to clean your windows because I doubt posh or even middle class people clean their own windows.

Washable nappies How is this chavvy? They are used by a certain eco friendly middle class arn't they who like to go on about sustainability.

Books What? How are books chavy? It's the exact oppossite. Not having books is chavy?

Do you mean vintage and/or antique? Hardly chavvy…

cormorant5 · 02/09/2022 15:47

Too much Burberry check.
Keeping baseball cap on to eat. (Males)

LisaVanderpump1 · 02/09/2022 15:48

Kids that are named after places. Considered chavvy if you're of a lower socio-economic rank, but totally acceptable if you're a posho. Names like India, Dakota, and Brooklyn are good examples of this I think.

RobertaFirmino · 02/09/2022 15:49

@HoppingKangaroo What if that second language was Romani, the SAHM was a single mum in a council flat on benefits, the surname was double barrelled because the parents were not married and the book was Fifty Shades Of Grey? These wouldn't be higher class indicators at all.

MsFogi · 02/09/2022 15:49

Where do the middle and lower classes stand on 'pegging'? Just asking for a friend who's moving to Windsor soon.

You are still missing the point. If your furniture is second hand then if you are working class it will be looked down on because of the class hierarchy people cling to. If you are middle class then you might also have second hand furniture and it might be that that furniture is older nd better quality but it is also true that your class means your secondhand furniture is automatically seen as classy rather than chavvy.

Cam22 · 02/09/2022 15:55

I read somewhere that new furniture, (especially if it’s “matchy matchy”) is not very well regarded. It suggests you don’t inherit furniture and/or that you don’t appreciate well made old/vintage/antique furniture.

Wiccan · 02/09/2022 15:56

Such a great thread ruined by posters asking for explanations 🙄

donquixotedelamancha · 02/09/2022 15:56

Imagine if the queen were working class:

  • Never had a job.
  • Married a foreigner.
  • No qualifications.
  • 4 kids, 3 failed marriages, none did well academically, none have held down steady jobs.
  • Once of the kids is a sex pest.
  • Takes loads of money in taxpayer handouts.
  • Never pays parking tickets.

The Mail would demonise her.

I disagree! So funny…

You disagree that people judge others harshly for things purely because of their perceived class and judge others for the same thing positively again because of their perceived class?

Well you can disagree with that but they do, they really do.

Burberry

ALL of Spain? Perhaps the beachy resorts - and even being at those means you can travel away from them and explore beautiful and quaint villages and lovely countryside.
I would hardly call city breaks anywhere in Spain chavvy. That’s nonsense!

TimeAtTheBar · 02/09/2022 16:01

Children in matching outfits.
