Chavvy is define in Websters as "/ˈtʃævi/ (British English, offensive, informal) (of a person) behaving, dressing or speaking in a way that you think shows a low social class and lack of education." So it's defined as offensive, and you're also asking the "poor" to comment. What's the intention of this thread?

I presumed the OP is trying to make a point that when you have money you're judged kindly for things that poorer people would be savaged for, with speaking a foreign language presumably because rich people pay for private language tuition for social mobility, whereas you're more likely (because of racism, colonialism and so on) to be in a lower SE class if you are a refugee, or immigrant and that often comes with people negatively stereotyping your culture and stereotyping you (including language).

Crossing a desert in Africa on foot while potentially being shot at, then crossing a body of water in a dinghy

poor: feckless illegal probably after an easy life

rich: daring adventurer, give the man a TV series

@FinanceLPlates I reckon you win the thread...

The battered Volvo covered in dog hair is often wheeled out as a MC identifier on MN and elsewhere.

As is having a messy “too cool to clean” house.

I used to know someone who came from a very well off family, kids in boarding schools overseas, several properties, and all the confidence that comes with it - and he drove an old, battered Golf.

“Poor” people walking round a shop speaking a different language are viewed differently to MC people walking round a shop speaking a different language

I think being in Wales must be skewing my perception of this.

Or perhaps were I grew up as there as there was a large and diverse Asian population in nearby towns - less so in my village though there were a few.

I supposed this could hold true for where IL as are little immigration as nothing really there - it is mainly east European other languages you hear but they were widely considered hard workers and good tenants but suspect they many have encountered some prejudice.

EthelMcUnready · 02/09/2022 13:41

Very well explained

Lazy working class kid at school ...feckless ...won't amount to anything ext ext.

Lazy middle class kid ...oh He's an original. Can't be bothered with all the petty rules ...and I support him in that 😁

How would speaking a second language ever be seen as "chavvy"?

As has been explained multiple times - when English is the second language.

I hate the term chavvy and how it is used to demonise people, but I understand what you are getting at by the post.

I don't think most people would consider babysitters or speaking a second language "chavvy" though.....

It depends what the second language is. I am ethnically Asian but grew up in a north European country. I talk to my kids in the language of the country I grew up in. I often get asked by random people overhearing us what language I'm talking or something like: "what's that you are talking? Is it Pakistani / Indian?". (Yeah I know those are not languages). When I say "No, it's <north European language>" the person asking suddenly becomes a lot friendlier and more respectful. 😔

Wearing an England football shirt abroad with a beer belly and tatoos.

Comedycook · 02/09/2022 13:51

Being an alcoholic. My friends mum is basically an alcoholic but instead of concern, everyone seems to think her drinking is just good fun...I mean she's drinking good wine and expensive whiskey in her big house and holiday home so yep, how hilarious! Meanwhile if a tramp on the street drank the same volume of alcohol as she does, they'd all be looking on in disgust

Working class children are "naughty", middle class children are "spirited".

This for me!

Jamaisy82 · 02/09/2022 13:56

@UnnecessaryFennel probably wearing a rugby shirt.

BuckarooBanzai · 02/09/2022 13:57

Drunken family parties in the garden with a marquee versus drunken family parties in the garden with a gazebo. Behaviour is probably similar including drugs of choice. Eyebrows might be raised at the first the police could be called in for the second.
