What was this kids' book?

I was a child of the very early 80s and I recently had a memory of a much-loved book but I can't find it anywhere as my memory of the book is so vague!

It was a picture book about a girl who lost her favourite cuddly toy (could have been a teddy or a rabbit) and the story is about the toy's journey back to her.

Seeing the Brambly Hedge books reminded me of the illustrations but it's not that illustrator. There's one particular image I remember of the toy in a stream and a bridge.

Can anyone help?!

I can’t help but this sounds like a film I used to watch as a child (1996 baby, but it was illustrated so could have been an old film) and have been trying to remember the name of for ages! I hope someone remembers so I can check if it is the same!

Fingers crossed we solve two mysteries with one book 😊🤞🏻

Was it "This is the Bear that went to the Dump?" By Helen Craig?

No, not that one. I'm fairly certain it was a girl!

Thanks for replying though!

There is a book I have called The Sea Saw. I thought it was modern but the story matches what you describe

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 01/09/2022 22:51

Old Bear by Jane Hissey? It has a rabbit in it too and was very big in the 80s

ihearttea · 01/09/2022 22:51

Dogger?

This looks lovely but not the one. It's on the list for DD though!

Dogger and Old Bear are the right era and 'feel' but not those ones.

Dogger still brings a tear to my eye!

Really long shot but could it be one of the Blackberry Farm books? I had the little square ones as a child but I see they've reprinted them with covers that do look similar to Brambly Hedge.

The description makes me think of the one called Rusty the Sheepdog where the little girl who lives on the farm loses her doll and Rusty manages to track it down, visiting all the places it had been. It made me cry when I was little!

Someone is reading it aloud on YouTube if you wanted to check it out.

Not Blackberry Farm but they look gorgeous!

I love kids' books.

Alpaca by Rosemary Billam?

YelloCar · 01/09/2022 23:03

It’s not this as no stream but your description reminds me of the lost and found house.

UnOeufIsEnough · 01/09/2022 23:03

No - but a good shout!

Not that one either, @YelloCar

There's an Enid Blyton story like that. I had it in a compilation book called tales from Toy land and other stories.

Tatty Ratty (Helen Cooper)?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 01/09/2022 23:26

Did the bear get lost out of a car window or something? I remember a story about a bear being lost and getting caught in a tree and then something about a blue ribbon?!

Magicpaintbrush · 01/09/2022 23:26

If you go to google images and type in 'picture book about a lost cuddly toy' loads of options pop up - your book may well be amongst them...

UnOeufIsEnough · 01/09/2022 23:26

No, none of those unfortunately!
