Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

There's a hidden village under Glasgow Central which virtually disappeared when the station was built. Grahamston I think it's called, G ogle it.

Ross-On-Wye.

WTF goes on there?

You can cut the atmosphere with a knife. Everything looks like it’s from twenty years ago. The vibe is SO WEIRD.

There is a town in Suffolk that is like that, at least the high street. Most window displays somehow look like from 30 years ago.

VariationsonaTheme · 30/08/2022 20:06

Penrith.

Also, Alcatraz. Very creepy vibes and couldn’t wait to get out of there.

I went there on an out of bounds weekend once years ago. yep, I was left feeling creeped out but don’t know why.

Isle of Wight. Shanklin High Street was like stepping back into the 1970s. Somewhere on the island were two churches close to each other, one had a lovely feeling to it, the other, we couldn't wait to get out.

Haggisfish3 · 30/08/2022 20:07

Haha! Facinating about Glasgow central. I feel the same about it. And Thurso. We went to Iona and it’s beautiful but near May Day and there were lots of odd straw people and animals etc in gardens. It was so terrifyingly like the wicker man! 🤣😱

Glastonbury I found weird and depressing. Scratch the veneer of try hard mysticism and it seemed mean and artificial and oppressive.

And Dundee. Bits of it were really interesting but my goodness, how many bins?! It had a strange lack of identity in places.

And Ireland. I went to three villages in three days and they were identical. All three of them had a shop playing the same song and selling the same shamrock magnets and seemingly identical shopkeepers. It felt like I was trapped in an Irish Truman Show. DD even asked why we kept going back to the same shop. I assume they were just standard tourist fare, akin to the shops in Scotland selling shortbread and bagpipes but in a flying postnatal visit, it all seemed weird.

Campbeltown. Had wanted to visit for ages. As soon as I got there I wanted to get away. No logical reason.

Property there is always really cheap and I always wonder why!

Lived in Dundee for a while, a long time ago. Could not wait to leave!

@Mascia Do you happen to remember the name of it by any chance?

I’d forgotten about Campbeltown! Completely agree.

Lbnc2021 · 30/08/2022 20:16

Buckie. My exhusband came from there. I only visited once and that was enough, it was like at the edge of civilisation

Numbertwenty · 30/08/2022 20:19

Surprised no one had said Portland yet.
The weirdest place I’ve ever been to this day.

I was born there 😄

Three places have really given me the creeps.

Ellesmere Port
Staithes
Isle of Wight (would have left the same day if we could have done)

Oh but I love Staithes!

there’s a village near me called Hough On the Hill. It’s quite sought after and some property is expensive. It has a lovely pub/restaurant, very upmarket.

however I get goose bumps every time we drive through. The main street near the pub, it all looks as if nothing has changed for hundreds of years and even on the sunniest day, it seems dark and shadowy. Gives me the creeps.

ThePumpkinPatch · 30/08/2022 20:23

Oh and Skelmersdale! What a bizarre place. A purposely built town that seemingly had no thought out into it at all. Horrible, horrible place.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 30/08/2022 20:24

Once went on a road trip in Scotland with an ex, booked the cheapest places I could find on booking.com. Stayed in this one "hotel" in the highlands- get there to find a key in the door, and a note as to which room we were staying in. Find what was billed as a double room weirdly with 5 beds (double and three singles) in the attic. Go into a local pub, and they explain the place is being run by the son of the original owners and how it used to be such a good BnB etc. During the time we stayed there (a few days, at least) we heard several people moving around, driving off in the night etc, but saw no-one.

Honestly felt like we had wandered onto the set of a horror film!

@ThePumpkinPatch Yes, it’s Felixtowe. It does have some nice areas, like the beach, but other parts have this strange out of time vibe about them. I find it quite fascinating in a way 🙂

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 30/08/2022 20:26

Boston in Lincolnshire and the surrounding countryside. It’s so flat it’s disorienting

Inmyownlittlecorner · 30/08/2022 20:26

Romney Marsh in Kent. Every time I’ve been I get an overwhelming sense of sadness.

ThePumpkinPatch · 30/08/2022 20:27

@Mascia Yes me too! That's why I asked as I'm going to do a bit of Google Maps-stalking ! 🤣

Gagaandgag · 30/08/2022 20:27

Driving through Stoke on Trent - horrible experience

Seriously Stepford.
