Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

Not too far from Ross-on-Wye-

Bromyard.

Place gives me the creeps. Local town for local people.

Never mind the newsworthy attempt to 'rebrand' it with a backwards D- place needs far more than a new logo to convince me to do more than drive through it on the way to somewhere less creepy.

Funny you mention this, I was going to say it but didn't think anyone would know it. What a weird place! We stayed there in our caravan many years ago, and in the evening drove to a pub, and honestly everyone just stopped and turned to look at us. There was a heavy sense of menace in the air, and I was quite frankly scared. Having grown up in Glasgow I'm quite used to uncomfortable situations but this was something else. We took our drinks outside even though it was cold, looked at each other and said let's get out of here, and drove fast back to our caravan. We left early next morning.

Driving through Stoke on Trent - horrible experience

I remember being traumatised by roundabouts 😱

goldenbag · 30/08/2022 21:53

Santa Barbara

Niagra Falls - look one way and you see one of the largest waterfalls in the world. Look the other way - Blackpool!

Yes!!!

Agree about Portmeirion in Wales too. We didn't actually go because you have to pay now and we couldn't be arsed, but the pictures look so weird, especially when you think about where it is - it just doesn't make sense!

Have you seen the episode of the Windsors where they visit Poundbury?

I’d not heard of the the program ‘The Windsors’ I’ll have to see if that episode is available anywhere to watch.

My weird/creepiest place is not an actual place but an event. I had pet chinchillas when I was young and used to go on a forum to learn about the best diet/habitat etc etc. A few of the group members talked about going to a chinchilla show and it wasn't too far from me.

My BF and I went, it was in a village hall and it was just odd. Hundreds of chinchillas in tiny show boxes just looking scared and miserable, and so many people seemingly obsessed with chinchillas.

I just felt cruel being there, it was such an odd, weird place!

Another vote for Matlock Bath as well as Stoke on Trent.

Surprised to see the whole of Norfolk and Suffolk mentioned. Seems a bit off.

Glastonbury I found weird and depressing. Scratch the veneer of try hard mysticism and it seemed mean and artificial and oppressive.

And Dundee. Bits of it were really interesting but my goodness, how many bins?! It had a strange lack of identity in places.

And Ireland. I went to three villages in three days and they were identical. All three of them had a shop playing the same song and selling the same shamrock magnets and seemingly identical shopkeepers. It felt like I was trapped in an Irish Truman Show. DD even asked why we kept going back to the same shop. I assume they were just standard tourist fare, akin to the shops in Scotland selling shortbread and bagpipes but in a flying postnatal visit, it all seemed weird.

Which county were you in? Wasn’t Cork was it? I love the Beara peninsula but find the rest (places I’ve been anyway) of Cork a bit unsettling.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/08/2022 22:06

@goldenbag Got to admit that's one of my favourite places I've been to!!

PinkButtercups · 30/08/2022 22:07

Ex boyfriends parents house.
Not so much the house, just the parents.

Slough,
Still Slough.

Let it go John

goldenbag · 30/08/2022 22:10

@Crikeyalmighty I did like it, but found it eery at the same time if that makes sense?

DwightShrutesYFronts · 30/08/2022 22:14

Devizes. I can't believe nobody else has said that! Weirdest place ever and not in a particularly good way.

Trinity65 · 30/08/2022 22:17

The arches off of Villiars Street , Central London

crimsonlake · 30/08/2022 22:17

Saltburn, made me feel very uneasy.

How very dare you 😂.

Hehe! 😬sorry to offend! 🤣 I once drove through to meet my friend on the other side and it totally ruined my day. I had a massive headache when I arrived and was dreading my return journey!

Gagaandgag · 30/08/2022 22:31

I agree on the Matlock bath. Very oppressive! But my children adore the pirate ship playground - although most of that playground is run down apart from the ship!

There is actually a really beautiful walk from Matlock bath to Matlock called the High Tor - it begins just up from the cable cars

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 30/08/2022 22:33

@TroysMammy I can't unread your comment now! I've just booked to take my boys for a few days!
I've booked a lovely apartment so hopefully the area isn't too weird!

Leah2005 · 30/08/2022 22:37

@Useyourfork haha we loved Watermouth Castle when our ds was young and feel quite sad we won't go there again 😂

LucilleIsThirsty · 30/08/2022 22:41

Luton. It was very grey and dull. And a weird vibe, like something could kick off at any minute.
Apologies to anyone who lives there!

An intentionally weird place we found on a road trip in Finland is a field of 1000 scarecrows called The Silent People. Pictures online don't really do justice to being the only people wondering through these rows of scarecrows, everyone unique.

Same road trip, less intentional but just as creepy, was the empty road through northern Finland. We drove for hours without seeing another vehicle... Except for some military trucks going the other way. Felt like we were the last ones out before doomsday.

fizzyfood · 30/08/2022 22:46

Milton Keynes coach way, Portland and Glenridding.

Northernsoullover · 30/08/2022 22:47

Avoca in Ireland. Its where Ballykissangel was filmed. We went into Fitzgeralds all happy to be there and you could have heard a pin drop. They didn't have any food on and they seemed pissed off that we asked.
It wasn't just the pub though. The whole place just felt off. We couldn't get out of there quick enough.

We had a similar experience driving through Sweden. Having previously lived in rural Suffolk with its many, many villages and country pubs dotted around it was so weird to drive for miles and miles and see nothing but pine forests.

Brighton. I’ve been twice and it just feels weird. As I walked from Brighton to Hove, it felt devoid of feeling - just empty, and I felt progressively more irritated and wanted to get back home. I didn’t feel like that walking along the coastal path in Lytham.
