Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

Jaywick. I'd never heard of it, and jogged through it one day by chance when on holiday jn Clacton. It reminded me of a South African township. Unsaved roads and prefab houses. I got a bit obsessed with it for a while Blush

And Canberra. I've been to much more objectively weird places like the Killing Fields in Cambodia, but Canberra was a completely soulless contrived city that had nothing of any warmth or interest. I can't believe that it's Australia's capital, after experiencing Sydney, Melbourne, Perth etc.

It’s Australia’s capital because Sydney and Melbourne were arguing over it and they created somewhere in the middle 😂

I am intrigued! Lived there for a year and whilst it's definitely outback / rural Australia rather than city I am wondering what I missed!

It’s maybe the redneck element? I don’t know, maybe not fair to say!

TroysMammy · 31/08/2022 19:23

@TheRealKatnissEverdeen We did really enjoy the Isle of Wight and if it wasn't for covid and my partner's scary driving we would have gone back a few years ago. There really is a lot to do there but the High Street was in a time warp.

The other church we went to, a really old one was lovely and I saw my first and only red squirrel in the churchyard.

The parrot in the zoo was funny, the model village quaint and the Roman Museum was really interesting.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it just like we did, just keep out of creepy churches 😃

Isle of Man
Milton Keynes

(but Suffolk is lovely - can't believe it has been mentioned here)

Not Townsville, but Kuranda near Cairns gave me the heebie jeebees. We stayed for a few days and I was desperate to leave.

Have really enjoyed reading this thread. You mention all these places but your descriptions of them are making me laugh! Brilliant read.

😆

There’s many places in Australia that I’ve felt like I shouldn’t be. I’m not woo but I think it’s down to feeling as though those places are significant to indigenous Australians and should be left alone. The nullarbor plain completely freaked me out as a child. It’s so isolated and eerie, feels like you’re alone in the world.

The beach at Jaywick is gorgeous. The rest of it... not so much.

The Art Deco style ex holiday camp as you walk away from jaywick on the coast absolutely fascinated me and I'd have loved to have seen it in its heyday!

Scianel · 31/08/2022 20:34

I agree with whoever said Birmingham. Something not right about that place.

Found one this weekend. St Bees. All those statics overlooking the bleak grey and brown beach with nearby views of Sellafield.

Onlyhadonejob · 31/08/2022 20:49

Walsingham in Norfolk. Packed car park but empty streets. Lots of shops selling full catholic robes - there is a Catholic shrine there. Not something you see often. Even the workmen painting houses stopped to stare at us. When we got to a charity shop called Let the Children Live we were just too weirded out

The old wax museum in Brading, Isle of Wight. It was BRILLIANT. Had nightmares about it for ages afterwards. Sadly (or not?) it doesn't exist any more and the waxworks were bought by collectors. There's a facebook group for them!

I LOVED this place and still have an old 1980s guide book. For some reason I was fascinated by ‘little Jane stricken by consumption’ - strange child!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 31/08/2022 21:08

@TroysMammy Good damage mitigation 😂😂 Thank you!
We are off tomorrow - will report any weirdness back to this thread.

Crikeyalmighty · 31/08/2022 21:21

Nobody has mentioned Wroxham
in Norfolk-- Perfectly ok place except all the shops are owned by Roy's- so you will have the supermarket, garden centre, clothes shop etc-all called Roys!! I found it fascinating the first time we went- quite bizzare.

HappyHappyHermit · 31/08/2022 21:24

@Crikeyalmighty I've been there, you've got to love Roys of Wroxham!

That house wasn‘t in Harrogate was it?

TunnelOfGoats · 31/08/2022 21:36

Westbury in Wiltshire seemed really weird when I stayed there a few years ago. And I've found a few other places in Wiltshire to have really odd vibes. I didnt like North Wales in the mountainous areas. Blaenau Festiniog was incredibly strange

Crikeyalmighty · 31/08/2022 21:38

@HappyHappyHermit Yes - I do love it partly I think because the whole set up is so bloody odd!

I LOVE Roy's!!!!! I have a hessian shopping bag from there! 😆

Deepcut barracks in Surrey. We lived there for about a year when I was 10-ish. Everything about that place felt off. Years later, I remember seeing it reported in the press that there were several suicides of young army recruits there. I wasn’t surprised.

Omg me too - for years I thought she was the same Jane as Lady Jane Grey idiot

I had the guidebook and used to dare myself to look at the screaming heretic in the dark 😊

Racheltension1 · 31/08/2022 22:28

Laugharne, pronounced Larne, West Wales. No wonder Dylan Thomas was an alcoholic living there, there's sod, all else to do. You can hear a pin drop over that estuary. No children anywhere.

dockspider · 31/08/2022 22:48

Yes yes to Portland. We used to climb there and I remember once two lads coming and just staring at us loading our ropes and gear back into the car, it felt very Straw Dogs and unsettling.

I drive through Dundee fairly regularly and I don’t really think it’s weird, just very sad beyond the area they’ve spruced up along the water. It’s the only place I’ve ever seen police called to the soft play, and the only place I’ve witnessed a DV incident on a main road in the middle of the day (or at any other time to be honest).

Rainbowcat99 · 31/08/2022 22:52

Port Sunlight... beautiful place but creepy with all the identical houses.

I’m from the Isle of Man and even I find certain parts of it strange - what about it did you find odd?
I live in London and have done for a long time, my family are still there but sometimes when stepping off the plane I feel I’ve stepped back 20 years!

OldWivesTale · 31/08/2022 23:05

In the US: Salt Lake City - very weird vibe but they're mostly Mormons so that's maybe why. Also, Las Vegas - very depressing. Washington felt totally soulless in an unsettling way.
