Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

1000 replies

chattp · 30/08/2022 11:17

Not that I've had many!

But Christian Bale was in London 'itsu' a few months back.

He was buying something but I'd just picked it out of the chilled section. I saw he went to reach out for it at the same time so offered it to him, as I liked something else anyway

His response? 'You've touched it. Why would I want it now?'

I was really shocked at how rude he was!

I was an extra on a TV show with Matthew Macfadyen once. I was in the makeup trailer having my makeup done, and he came over to chat to the makeup artist (forcing himself into the middle of our conversation) but deliberately and very overtly pretended that I did not exist.

Literally, like, I was telling the MUA about an exhibition I'd seen at a museum and she was saying that it sounded really good, and the following conversation ensued:
MUA: Oh that exhibition sounds really good.
MM: What exhibition? (Bear in mind he'd heard me talk about it in detail.)
Me: It's an exhibition about such and such.
MM to MUA (blanking me): What exhibition, MUA?
MUA: Repeats what I've just said.
MM: Oh that sounds good, thanks for telling me, MUA. How long does it run till?
Me: Till end of next month.
MM: I could google it, if you don't know.
MUA: Till the end of next month.
MM: Thank you MUA.

It was the most surreal conversation I've ever had in my life. It was exactly like when a toddler decides they're mad at mummy so pretends she's invisible.

Funnily enough I was later sitting in the makeup trailer but sort of hidden in a corner and MM came in to make a phone call thinking he was alone, and I heard some pretty damaging and scandalous things. Ha! But I never repeated them since they could hurt someone else.

I've always thought Matthew Macfadyen was a massive twat ever since.

Ooh...I think his wife is a brilliant actress...I hope he isn't a cheat!!

gatehouseoffleet · 31/08/2022 13:16

Your mother was incredibly rude in that scenario

why? If someone blanks you because they think they are better than you, it's perfectly fine to tell them they're being rude in my view. The celebrity was rude.

How could you possibly know she blanked that poster because she thought she was better?!

RaRaRaspoutine · 31/08/2022 13:19

I would take up arms for lovely Keeley Hawes so if Matthew Macfayden turns out to be a cheating dick I shall defend her!!

In contrast to Steve Cram I met David Wilkie at a kids swimming event, 2 of mine were keen swimmers. Unusually he approached me for a chat rather than me approaching the super star he was back then with all his Olympic medals. We had a nice chat. I was happy to chat, the star struck bit hit me as he walked away particularly when I saw the looks on the other mums' faces.

Aww lovely :) I had a similar experience with a singer called Alistair Griffin. I don't know if you will have heard of him, but he did the theme tune for SkyF1 a few years ago a tune called 'Just Drive' anyway a choir I was in recorded a song with him and we were rehearsing for an event, he came over for a chat and got talking about F1 as he's a big fan as much as me, and we spent ages chatting. It was a very pleasant conversation. I remember it fondly to this day, nice man!

On a separate note, I went to school with a very famous ex soap star, who married someone from a reality TV show. Whenever I catch up in the street, or at parties, with people in my year group, conversation always turns to this person...who it turns out is one of those 'don't you know who I am?' sort of people. We were friends on social media, until they got really famous, and subequently deleted me from all forms. I am friends with their other friends though...

Ashley Banjo doesn't accept people talking to him.

Noooo surely not!! We saw Diversity on stage recently and he seemed so lovely!

DuchessDarty · 31/08/2022 12:17

I'm looking forward to hearing that Harry Styles is an absolute cunt because he must get people clamouring to talk to him every minute of every day he's out in public.

@Summerslam you missed upthread then when someone said their photographer friend said he was rude Grin However a friend of mine is an exec producer who worked with Harry fairly recently and said he was really charming, interesting and unassuming.

People who are saying it depends on the day as to how a celebrity is are ignoring the massive factor that it really depends on context and relationship.

I’ve been a professional adviser to one of the women on this thread who has had a mix of rude and lovely reviews, all for casual encounters. She was great to me, but she respected my opinion and skill set and knew that she could speak in absolute confidence. So of course she’d treat me with more respect but could also be herself and relax, which meant occasionally being grumpy as we all ate.

Harry Styles must get a lot of grief/a lot of people trying to 'grab a piece of him'.

I remember c 25 years ago spotting the teen heart throb Paul Nicholls [exceptionally attractive mid-late 90s 'Eastenders' actor] being chased through central London by a pack of girls, I mean at least a couple of dozen of them, literally chasing, shouting and screaming etc, the poor boy looked terrified [as well as, despite being still probably of school age & me a couple of years older, damnably attractive], genuinely terrified.

Though I suppose maybe HS has the money to insulate himself from that sort of thing.

FettleOfKish · 31/08/2022 13:36

I've witnessed Tony Hadley be an absolute knobber to people a couple of times. Once when he was staying in the Premier Inn I worked at (Because all the A-listers worthy of having commoners bow down to them stay at Premier Inn). His mate Martin Kemp was good fun when he was DJing at an event I was at though. All in for the selfies that I was taking to send to my Spandau Ballet Superfan Mum.

Jason Donovan basically barged 8 year old me out of his way when I was waiting for autographs at the Palladium stage door after Joseph.

On the upside Greg James off of Radio 1 was very lovely and gracious and stopped for a photo when I bumped into him while he was filming something in Austria, while I babbled into his face about how much I loved his wife's book that I'd just finished reading Blush

I've heard Henry Cavill can be a dick when approached 'off-duty' but the couple of times I've encountered him he's been at public appearances so nice as pie (and he smells divine).

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 31/08/2022 13:40

itsnotdeep · 30/08/2022 18:12

I met George Clarke and he was lovely @GonnaGetGoingReturns - bumped into him at Margate where he was filming and found ourselves next to him on the train back to London.

To be fair to him, he was sort of starting out in his career (or getting ahead) and he wasn't with our company long. I mean he wasn't rude rude, but he definitely didn't seem to be chatty/sociable which was a pity really, as the firm we worked at was big and also big on the social side of things.

Abhannmor · 31/08/2022 13:40

Lampzade · 31/08/2022 10:51

I disagree

So do I. Why do a charity gig if you are just going to be a rude moaneyhole?

StolenWillowTree · 31/08/2022 13:41

I didn’t meet her but friend recently worked with her in Matilda and said Emma Thompson was genuinely one of the loveliest people hes worked with and was like the pied piper being followed around by the children and kept them all entertained for hours.

Going back through the thread now. ET is the very nicest person I've ever met. I approached her after she'd given a talk which I never do, and she stood chatting to me about my career and giving advice for absolute ages, then later sent me a hand written letter in the post with more encouragement.

I also overheard a fan asking her an inappropriate personal question and she handled it really well without making the fan feel bad.

I won't hear a bad word about her!

DB had a summer job as a stagehand in the 70s at Wyndhams Theatre in the West End. Bill Nighy was starring in whatever play was on. So this was long before he hit the big time (Bill, not DB). DB says he was so sweet, funny and friendly and would often buy DB a pint in the bar and sit and chat. DB is so glad he went on to be majorly famous.

George Clooney is unfailingly kind and thoughtful to journalists at press junkets and brilliant with the fans milling about outside before and afterwards. He always takes time to take selfies, sign autographs and chat and looks everyone in the eye and seems genuinely appreciative. No idea what his private persona is like but he’s got the whole being lovely to fans and respectful and smily to lowly press down to an art-form in itself. Have never been a fan of his films (though I loved ER) but can’t fault him professionally from what I’ve witnessed.

Thank goodness Bill Nighy was lovely. I would have been so disappointed to hear otherwise. One of my all time favourite actors.

I know someone who worked with Paul Nicholas when he was in Eastenders (“Jooooeee, Joooeee” Grin) and I think he was a bit traumatised by the attention tbh. He wasn’t someone who wanted it, he was quite quiet and low-key, and I think he purposefully retreated from the public eye after EE for a bit.

But yes, exceptionally good-looking.

tigerfeet73 · 31/08/2022 13:48

Alexander Armstrong a few years ago at the Eistedfod, guest of honour/presenter, seems like a nice guy, sadly a “no eye contact” order was issued. Even Tom Cruise wouldn’t pull that nonsense.

Arbesque · 31/08/2022 12:20

I am a bit skeptical of posts wherea celebrity is pronounced vile, rude or whatever with no context given. It is equally likely that the poster was being a pest or approached a celebrity in an inappropriate situation and was ignored or told to go away.

I personally think that celebs have good and bad days like the rest of us. If they're getting a McD's (where I saw Zoe Ball in High St Ken years ago) then they probably shouldn't be bothered but equally so, the celeb shouldn't be downright rude.

I agree though, context is key. Most people are polite/friendly depending on the situation, unless you're really a dick always and to anyone unless they can help you.

I wasn't pleased about Gemma Collins shoving past me rudely (without looking where she was going) in a VIP area in a Romford bar where all the Towie celebs go/used to go. She's quite large, so it hurt. She had a face like thunder (very hard), there was no apology to me even though I said 'oww' quite loudly after she did it and I wasn't in her way as such, it was a busy area but she could've said 'excuse me'. From seeing since that she's not nice generally when out in public, then it's a pity that she is a grade A (Z lister) b*tch. She came across as very entitled.

DuchessDarty · 31/08/2022 13:49

Typo: Nicholls not Nicholas.

These types of threads are so odd, you encounter a person once and judge them. What if you were having a shit day met someone once and they declared you an utter twat and an awful person?

Famous people are famous for doing a job, they are no different to anyone else and aren't flawless.

Yes CB was unpleasant, does it warrant an entire thread on people no one really knows and saying how awful they are?

But certain celebs like Cilla Black and Paul O'Grady are renowned for being grade A pricks, to anyone and everyone apart from their inner circle.

There's no need for that.

If you're having a shit day then that's an excuse but a few stars, especially pop/music stars, who rely on their fans to buy tickets to their shows, download their music etc, I think have an obligation to be nice/as nice as they can, to said fans. Kiki Dee's 'Star' is a good tune about being a 'star'. Grin

I agree that in talent Christian Bale is in Leonardo/Clooney's etc league but he's definitely not as widely known. I've seen a few of his films but definitely would have to think hard about who he was if I bumped into him.

I am upset at @Ccoffee mixing him up with Christian Slater, I adore Christian Slater, have met him several times and he's been absolutely lovely every time. Personally for me Christian Bale is most definitely not in the same league as CS Grin

Robbie Williams - was an arse, no time for anyone and it was a public event

Will Young - rude and no time for people, again at a public event, I adored him and was so disappointed however since finding out more about his life/brother I wonder if things were just not good for him

David Beckham - lovely

David Ginola - charming, time for everyone

Rob Lowe - so sweet, chatted to everyone individually, slightly upsetting that he is way too good looking so made us look crap in the photos

Have met loads of celebs, most were really lovely, only the odd few too busy to bother to talk even at public events which I think is wrong as they are there working. Totally understand it if approached when at airports, restaurants etc.

PugInTheHouse · 31/08/2022 14:00

A few years ago (probably 20 now!) Louise Redknapp was taking part in an event for Tickled Pink breast cancer charity run by Asda. They were releasing a song, and getting groups together to sing it in every Asda store in the country, and she would be performing on a stage at the head office in Leeds. A huge amount of effort had gone into it, and my uncle worked for Asda FM at the time, so was part of the techie team taking her through exactly what would happen and how it would work linking up with the other stores etc.

She arrived, wasn't happy with the number of people in the crowd, told my uncle they were wasting her time, and got straight back in her Land Rover and drove off again.

Problem is, she was obviously very early arriving to sort everything out, and there were plenty of people who turned up as the time got closer - and my uncle had to then explain to them, and to the video link crowds in every store in the country, where she had gone.

This was for a breast cancer charity for goodness sake.

Louise Redknapp was really charming when I met her - it was an open house thing at Stella Mcartney's shop to which a friend and I had been invited. My friend pushed in front of LR so was in the front of the photos, but LR was fine about it, and really friendly

ChobKnees · 31/08/2022 14:05

This has turned exactly into the same thread we had a few weeks ago about celebrities. OP wanted certain stories of what happened with the bad celebrity. She didn't want to know that you thought the BBC weatherman from the 80's used to live down your road and was friendly. Some of these celebrities really aren't "celebrities" either.

Justleaveitblankthen · 31/08/2022 14:07

IcedPurple · 30/08/2022 14:06

I can think of loads of huge hits starring Leo Di Caprio.

Christian Bale? Not so much.

Well I know him only as Greek 'Mandras' in Captain Corelli's Mandolin. His accent was far superior to Nicholas Cage's 'Italian' one 😂

FatOaf · 31/08/2022 14:13

Some of these celebrities really aren't "celebrities" either.

Surely that's the definition of a celebrity. Ryan Gosling is an actor. Ed Sheeran is a singer (reputedly). Gareth Bale/Christian Eriksen is a footballer. Callum Best is a "celebrity".

CaveMum · 31/08/2022 14:14

Surely the only appropriate response to someone asking who Christian Bale is is to say “I’m Batman!” in as deep a voice as you can muster 😉

He is brilliant in The Big Short, it’s a fantastic and underrated film.
