Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

1000 replies

chattp · 30/08/2022 11:17

Not that I've had many!

But Christian Bale was in London 'itsu' a few months back.

He was buying something but I'd just picked it out of the chilled section. I saw he went to reach out for it at the same time so offered it to him, as I liked something else anyway

His response? 'You've touched it. Why would I want it now?'

I was really shocked at how rude he was!

I also met Kevin keegan at a restaurant in Guildford. Stood talking to some of my guy mates for ages and took pictures. His family we’re waiting at the door to leave and ended up saying they’d meet him outside. Was so so lovely

ChewyWombatStew · 31/08/2022 07:22

My mum met Kris Akabussi , she said he was lovely, very funny and chatty.
I heard Victoria Beckham was really nice. I know of the nanny who accompanied the family on holiday once, the nanny’s bags got lost and VB gave her money and sorted out new cosmetics and clothes for her until her bags arrived.
I met Melanie Griffith several times through work, she was lovely, a far cry from what I had expected.

Theblackdogagain · 31/08/2022 07:29

I've met a fair few famous people, at charity things and other random places. One that stands out is ewan mcgregor. He was so sweet to me, I was really nervous and he was lovely but down right rude to my husband.

Eastie77Returns · 31/08/2022 07:33

Anyone consider that the ‘rude’ celebrity who huffed and puffed while waiting in line or refused to smile might just be having a bad day? This is clearly the case as the same celebrity is often described as horrible by one poster and absolutely lovely by another on MN.

A lot of people on this thread sound very entitled tbh, expecting a celeb to drop everything and pose for a picture or to smile back and acknowledge them. I was sitting in a hotel bar once near one of the actors from Harry Potter. In the space of 30mins he was approached by so many people asking for pictures etc. It just looked like hell. Why should these people have to put a game face on all the time because they are an actor/singer/whatever.

The public put these people up on pedestals and they decide they are ‘vile’ and ‘rude’ when it turns out they are human just like the rest of us.

Littlegoth · 31/08/2022 07:45

@bruce43mydog Ive always found Dominic Brunt (Paddy) to be lovely - we’ve got a shared interest and so some common friends so I bump into him a couple of times a year. He does get recognised a lot though.

Maybe she was drunk Grin

Why is that funny?

She was a troubled and damaged individual being hounded by the media and exploited by those close to her, and became an addict.

Weird thing to post a laughing emoji at

@Lunar270
My wife went to school with Adam Woodyatt and bumped into him in town. It was completely random as we don't live anywhere near where they went to school (mid Wales).
Anyway she went up to him, said hello and mentioned that they went to school together. He just shrugged disinterestedly and couldn't look less interested.

Why should he have been interested? She was probably the 15th person that day to approach and maybe he just wished to get on with his day without random people interrupting him.

Tiny2018 · 31/08/2022 08:01

'Nasty Nick', lovely down to earth man.

Sandi Toksvig. When I encountered her in in a cafe in London not long before Covid she was stony-faced and quite intimidating. It was busy and I had to squeeze past her to get to one of the only empty tables. I apologised for brushing her with my coat and she gave me a withering look. I wouldn't dream of bothering a celebrity when they're out in public, so I just settled into my seat and got my newspaper out. When I looked up she gave me another stony stare. No idea what I did to deserve it. She was joined by another woman but every now and then I'd look up and find her eyeballing me in a disconcerting way. Very odd and not like her usual public persona — but then I guess no one can keep that up all the time.

My children were at the same school as hers. She was lovely. Reckon she was just having a bad day

I don't understand that either. What was the point of going up to say that?

Winterbaby21s · 31/08/2022 08:24

I’ve met a few celebrities as I have friends that work in theatre and film. Most of them have been lovely but friends have worked with some nightmares. Some of the ones that come to the top of my head.
Sting is particularly unpleasant bordering on nasty.
I LOVED Barbara Windsor and Roger Lloyd Pack.
Greg Davies is hilarious and extremely kind.

Jimmy Carr is pretty much what you see on tv
David Attenborough was very sweet.
Jamie Redknapp was nice but came across a little cocky.
Tom hanks is absolutely charming.
I didn’t meet her but friend recently worked with her in Matilda and said Emma Thompson was genuinely one of the loveliest people hes worked with and was like the pied piper being followed around by the children and kept them all entertained for hours.

GyozaGuiting · 30/08/2022 23:18

@beachcitygirl where did you meet Will Ferrell?! Jealous.
SJP comes across as an arse, no wonder Kim cattrall didn’t go back!

I'm cabin crew. He was brilliant & made us all laugh the whole flight

latesummervibes · 31/08/2022 08:27

all these stories about angry celebs pushing past people made me think of an encounter a few months back with Ruth Langsford at the O2 after a gig. Everyone was rushing out and she bumped into me, but she apologised profusely and was beaming and smiling at all the people who noticed it was her. (and she's very beautiful in the flesh)

I once saw Ed Byrne at an event once. Love his comedy but he seemed very stand offish and unapproachable at the event. His eyes were like daggers lol. I wouldn't have dared approach him in case he bit my head off!

Some friends & I went to see Ed Byrnes perform live. Afterwards we were sitting in the bar having a drink and he came over and joined us. He sat with us for about an hour chatting, till the bar closed. He was very funny on stage & very nice irl.

My son went to see Ed and met him outside after the gig. They had a lovely chat and Ed gave my son a big hug before he left.
Also had a good experience with John Cooper Clarke , who you might expect to be a bit spikey!
Chris O Dowd was very nice too , spent ages talking to everyone after a small film festival in Galway.

when I was 9 I met Jimmy Savile as I'd raised some money (my idea) with my class, for one of his charities, was invited with all my class to watch his TV show being filmed and got to meet him. He wasn't at all nice, just wanted to get it out of the way

I met him when I was probably about 4 (I assume I was pre school age) with my mum, he was sitting outside the cafe at Canal Gardens i Roundhay. I can’t remember what he said but even 45 years later I remember he clearly didn’t actually like children. I also remember him muscling in to say happy birthday when my friends were singing to me on my 16th birthday at the Flying Pizza. I was clearly more his type then 🤢

DH used to compete at high level in a sport as a teenager. This is about 40 years ago. Saville was at one of the finals to give out medals and cups to the winners. DH said he couldn’t have made it more obvious how much he didn’t want to be there and that he was very disinterested and obviously bored. Barely spoke to the kids, even when heading out the awards.

One of my colleagues was working on set of Eurovision and told me Will Ferrell was lovely. Made time to speak to everyone, even the “invisible” workers that aren’t generally in contact with him. Was always cracking jokes.

I don't understand that either. What was the point of going up to say that?

Would you not approach somebody you’d been to school with but not seen for 20 years, if you bumped into them? I think a lot of people would, famous or not.

butterflied · 31/08/2022 08:22

Because they got on as kids. But obviously after 40 odd years, looks change and people are less recognisable.

When Schools Reunited was a thing people said hello to old classmates across the country. Not unusual at all.

ahna68 · 31/08/2022 08:58

Alan Shearer surprised me by refusing autographs and photos from kids asking on a flight (a Ldn to Newcastle flight so on his way home). I totally get not wanting to be interrupted but he didn't seem to handle it in a friendly way. Same with Sue Barker at Wimbledon - turned the corner where no longer cameras and face totally changed / blanked anyone approaching her.

Friend works on a lot of photo shoots and always says her absolute worst are Harry Styles and Adele. She has worked with both on several occasions so seems to be a theme - very entitled even in the very very early days of their careers

But one thing this thread does show is that people have very different experiences with the same celebrity - I agree with pp that they are allowed their off days!

lollipoprainbow · 31/08/2022 08:58

@Lakeyloo I was there too! My dd was so upset, I was pleased as can't stand her and it meant we could get an earlier ferry home !

I’ve got zero interest in seeing people I used to go to school with, where your only common ground is that you went to school together and their point of reference to you is you being a gobby 15 year old. Would be 100 x worse if you were on tv and people who you don’t have any interest in seeing think they’re owed a hello by virtue of your common ground.

Butterflytattoo · 31/08/2022 09:04

So jealous of whoever met Phil Spencer. I think he's gorgeous!
But I also think Jess Glynne has a beautiful voice 🤷
David Grant - lovely lovely man and incredibly kind
Lisa Faulkner - very nice smile when walking past her in M and S and clocked who she was
Normally I'm rubbish at recognising celebrities.
The most famous I ever met was Heather Mills-McC and she was really nice and sweet. I always wonder whether she became awful or whether the press just got at her.

He is without doubt one of the rudest people I have ever had to deal with. Good to know he has better days too!

Butterflytattoo · 31/08/2022 09:11

Friend met David Walliams and said he is a complete tw*t which didn't surprise me as I think he comes across awfully.
We used to meet Cilla Black a lot when we were little and she was always very nice to us.

Pikafuckingwho · 31/08/2022 09:23

I can’t fucking bear him. And his fake cockney chirping.
